Does that mean that there are offpeak trains from Heathrow, Rayners, and Cockfosters that don't run all the way to Cockfosters? Yes this is correct. However, in the current timetable there is a short period where about 70% of trains that terminating at Arnos Grove start at Northfields between 1100 and 1600. Between 1200 and 1500 the figure rises to 8 out of 9. Before and during the morning peak most come from Heathrow Terminal 5 and during and after the evening peak most come from Terminal 4. When departing from Arnos Grove most go to Rayners Lane, Northfields and Terminal 4 during the morning peak; to Northfields between the peaks until about 1500 and then Terminal 5 during and after the peak with a few Uxbridge and Rayners Lane services becoming the majority later in the day.

It would be because the, in this case, Northfields service is timetabled to depart before the train you are on from Cockfosters.
Note that with the current timetable it isn't just Northfields trains that reverse at Arnos Grove but Heathrow and Uxvridge/Raybers services.
During times of disruption there may be more trains reversing at Arnos Grove then there is timetabled.
Generally trains run in a specific timetabled order and it's the timetable that guides as to which train would depart first in the example you have described in the original post.

the butterfly cocks - i saw man using at middle of carriage - one hole on side - then nearset doors turns off the power and passegner opens the door successfully but those are need marked clearly for public to open in emergency If they were unfortunately certain passengers would use them to gain access to a train after the doors have closed or prevent a train departing so their mates in the ticket hall can board the same train...

There were a few around Hammersmith.
Possibly South Acton and maybe West Brompton (really not sure about the latter).
Newbury Park on the Central for a short time?
East Finchley on the Northern towards Finsbury Park.

recorded "apologies" - if you can't be bothered to do anything to apologise except press a button to trigger a recorded announcement, I don't reckon you are genuinely sorry. I completely see where you're coming from on this, however, on the 73 stock there are a few recorded announcements giving a reason for the delay and an apology. I tend to use these as they come up on the displays inside the train so anybody who cannot or has not heard the announcement can read it on the displays as it scrolls across. People boarding the train later in the delay will also have the opportunity to read this.

The two track in the middle were the all stations met trains on the slow line (now Jubilee) and the current met tracks would have been semi fast trains which is evident of the platforms at neasden and Wembley park Apologies for going OT, but just to point out when the Met went to Stanmore the northerly two tracks were the fast, and the two the locals south of these. The layouts were rearranged for the Bakerloo extension to Stanmore as we know it now They would have decreased the hight of the platform to 38ts level and 83 stock level and a reasonable height of 1996 stock as a majority of those stations dont have step free access The relavent re-used platforms during the track layout change would have had the track beds raised to decrease the platform heights.

If theyre friends then they acknowledge eachother but usually they dont just a casual wave, because as you pull into a station itll be interpreted as a near miss or one under and its standard procedure to whistle if it happens The most common reason for whistling in a platform isn't for a near-miss or one-under specifically but more as a warning or for summoning station staff.

out of curiosity what other crew depots were closed in the 1990's With the crew logging on at Acton and all the trains stabled at northfields and the crew at acton how is start up and shut down of the service coped with? Night shifts are used to deal with the "extreme" trains

1- the ding before the announcement has to be manually turned on by the driver each time the train's can is made live. This setting usually defaults to off.
2- this is just the driver manually playing the announcement on the DVA when they shut the doors.
3- there is one (or more?) particular train that does this. When setting a DVA route you use codes to determine the stopping pattern (stopping at T4, not stopping at T4, stopping at T4 and TG or not stopping at T4 but stopping at TG, stopping everywhere... You get the picture). If the journey starts at Cockfosters and the next trip east will askso finish there the train is set as a Cockfosters to Cockfosters stopping at T4. The train will display Heathrow T4/123 which will change automatically when the doors open at T4.
