Hi All,
Being a traveller on the Piccadilly Line almost everyday as I work at Heathrow Airport I have noticed a few things which I would just like to find out about in relation to the DVA:
1: Rarely whilst travelling before an announcement is played a light 'ding' sound is played. I have noticed this a couple of times on my journeys. Is this a setting that the driver enables or specific to that train?
2: On a couple of journeys I have been on, I have noticed as soon as the door beep's sound the "Please stand clear of the doors" announcement is played at every station of the journey at the exact same time synchronised with the door beep. Is this another DVA setting the driver can choose?
3: Finally, I heard a rare occurrence travelling to Heathrow a couple of weeks ago. The DVA announced the destination as "Heathrow Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via Terminal 4" when the announcement is usually "Heathrow Terminal 4 and 1,2,3". How is that possible?
Kind Regards

For number 2, that might be the driver simultaneously pressing both the door close button and the button that triggers a "please stand clear of the doors". As for number 3,I would expect that the scenario you gave was because the train was running around the loop going 1,2,3 -> 4 rather than 4 -> 1,2,3

I think trains can't go the other way around the loop, something to do with the track layout.

The loop is single track, meaning that you can't really have bidirectional operation (if the TPH is high anyway)

A quick glance at the Tube Map shows that the loop is indeed unidirectiona. AIUI the loop is only signalled to operate in the manner that it usually does. This is definitely a DVA question!

In answer to the questions, from my knowledge base... 1: I believe it's a driver setting that does this. 2: as per domh245's answer above 3: I seem to recall that there is a particular train that has this setting, rather than the usual one, but don't quote me!

1. This light 'ding' isn't a setting. It only features on one or two units and so you did well to catch it twice! 2. Answers above are correct 3. Setting the trip to "Cockfosters to Cockfosters via T4 loop" produces a different outcome to "Cockfosters to Heathrow 1,2,3 via the loop" The latter produces the "via Terminal 4" announcement but is seldom used - there was video evidence of this on YouTube but it has recently been removed.

1- the ding before the announcement has to be manually turned on by the driver each time the train's can is made live. This setting usually defaults to off.
2- this is just the driver manually playing the announcement on the DVA when they shut the doors.
3- there is one (or more?) particular train that does this. When setting a DVA route you use codes to determine the stopping pattern (stopping at T4, not stopping at T4, stopping at T4 and TG or not stopping at T4 but stopping at TG, stopping everywhere... You get the picture). If the journey starts at Cockfosters and the next trip east will askso finish there the train is set as a Cockfosters to Cockfosters stopping at T4. The train will display Heathrow T4/123 which will change automatically when the doors open at T4.

Whilst we're on the subject of Picc DVA, does anyone know why there seems to be a decrease lately in the use of the "tourist setting", e.g. at Covent Garden "alight for London's Transport Museum" rarely seems to be played lately? This is from using the Picc at least twice a week for the past few weeks, apart from a week long gap when I was on holiday.

On the contrary I've been travelling that way most days for the past 2 weeks and it's usually been played along with the alights at Russell Square and KXSP. That said, in the 6.5 years the DVA has been in use, I've never been able to work out a precise pattern as to when the 'tourist setting' is used - it really does depend on the driver.

AFAIK the tourist/longer announcements are made if the code for off peak is selected when we set up the train. as well as the transport museum, this also includes the RNIB at Kings X
