Even the BBC London 94.9 news bulletins this morning mentioned the whole East London Line was closed.
It may have made the cattle truck conditions on Southern this morning if staff and the BBC used the information correctly.

Why couldn't LO run some form of service this morning along the core section of line between Surrey Quays and Dalston Junction or even Whitechapel where it's all underground. They did. They managed a Dalston Juncton to New Cross service. A shame they didn't tell passengers that at Forest Hill this morning, otherwise I would've got off at New Cross Gate and walked to NX. We were told to use London Bridge instead. Plus local media said the whole line was suspended during the AM peak.

Southern managed some form of service between New Cross Gate and Norwood Junction in the London bound direction, while the southbound towards Croydon which had a signal fault was full of cancellations from both TOC's.

I'm guessing the Crystal Palace extension would replace the 2tph Southern Outer South London Line service between Victoria and London Bridge which currently operates alongside the ELL between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace.
If Thameslink services use the slow lines in addition to LO and Southern, the LO and TL would reduce the need for Southern paths into a reduced London Bridge after the works.

Since shops have decided to open on Boxing Day using Sunday hours, demand for all forms of public transport has gone up. I've been on packed buses on that day when NR TOC's has barely provided a train service in South London, so there's clearly a demand for it.
While I think Christmas Day will be preserved to an extent, I can see a full 365 day service on TfL services at least in 5/10 years as the demand for public transport extends to those wishing to visit their families who can't afford to get a taxi.

I wonder how LOROL managed to give their staff Boxing Day off when other TfL services are operating on Boxing Day?
It's not like Network Rail have closed the southern section of the ELL off as Southern are running 2tph to London Bridge on it.

When I was on the ELL replacement bus a few years back, I touched in and although I had PAYG ready for the journey, it read my bus pass instead.
The current combined LO/Southern replacement buses on the ELL are provided by Southern's sister companies Go-Ahead London and Metrobus.

What's the policy for using Oyster on NR and TfL rail replacement buses?
Just wondering as I'm sure you have to touch in on a bus on a TfL contracted bus, but not on a NR bus, or does it depend on the TOC?

There are ticket offices on the DLR at some stations. City Airport is one, but can't think what the others are. I think also that they are officially classed as Ticket Stops rather than Offices. Canary Wharf as well. They're Oyster Ticket Stops which issue the same range of products as a retailer.

If I recall LO are not running services on Boxing Day, which includes the ELL which has had services on the line under LUL.
The southern section of the ELL will have 2tph from Southern though from Norwood Junction to New Cross Gate.

Has Bethnal Green kept the dated signs or has it also had a refurb? (I haven't been east of Bank on the Central for a while)

Will they ever get a refurb? Still has the 1960's style signage and does look a bit grotty compared to the more recent Shepherd's Bush refurb.

I can't remember exactly what my first journey was, but can remember being taken out by my Mother on the Central Line to Ealing Broadway and she'd always get into a conversation with the guard!
I also recall going on the Met to Chesham and on the return, we ended up getting BR from Chalfont and Latimer back to London. This was in the mid 80s.
Otherwise as we lived in South London, my first rail journey would be on a Southern Region train to West/East Croydon on a slammer and also remember my first Class 456 train and being 'amazed' by the push button doors!

Bus services still ran on 7/7/05 from Zone 2 onwards. I remember bus services here terminated at Vauxhall or Elephant and Castle.
As for National Rail, if I recall Southern terminated services at New Cross Gate, Battersea Park or Clapham Junction.

National Rail stations still sell paper 7 day Travelcards inside London. (Including LO who give you the option of paper or Oyster)

Darryl, how ironic that you pay the NR Oyster fare to Shoreditch from Charlton, where as I use Forest Hill and pay the TfL fare of £2.40 to Shoreditch for using what is technically a NR service.
Oh well, a small price to pay to ensure I pay £2.40 to also go to a Tube station instead of the extra £1.10 on top.

I've had either the C or D codes when purchasing from LU stations. Bought a bus pass from Ladbroke Grove TVM which according to my Oyster Usage Statement was purchased with a credit card, (It's a Visa Debit Card) then Debit when purchaed from the ticket office at Embankment.

Not been checked on London Overground yet, but I did once this year on Southern, never on the tube yet.

I wonder why they've left those LU-era DMIs at the New Cross stations? Wouldn't LU be interested in redeploying them elsewhere? Failing that, is it technically not possible to switch them back on and have them display LO train info? The old LU DOI's would only show destination and minutes, like the others on the LU network. LO's are NR spec.

I'm guessing that in this instance LUL is like any other TOC "managing" a NR station, the station remains NR property and any alterations would have to be done by them. Indeed it is, same for LO on the ELL from New Cross Gate to West Croydon/Crystal Palace.

Last time I used NXG southbound, I saw a flatscreen TV-type display showing all departures (from memory, I think including Southern as well as LO services) standing on a tripod on the southbound LO platform, right outside the little hut on said platform. It's obviously an interim solution for southbound passengers. Oh yes, seen the flatscreen display between platforms 1-2 next to the hut from Platform 5. Platform 2 still has the DOI that only shows Southern departures from that platform.

Just to add, I was a NXG this afternoon and didn't hear any audio annoucements from Platform 1.

Post by bicbasher on Sept 12, 2010 18:31:39 GMT
On the plus side, we do now have audio announcements on platform 1 at New Cross Gate. Is it the same announcer as for the other platforms, or are they using the LOROL style announcements which only give the destination?

Hopefully an easy question?
If I use the bus with a B&T pass at 0920, then touch on the gates at a station at 0931, am I still entitled to the off-peak Oyster cap or is it the peak from touching in on a bus 11 mins earlier?

I suspect they'll be installed when LOROL becomes responsible for DOI's and station announcements next year at NXG. Currently Southern provide this service from East Croydon for the stations from Brockley to West Croydon/Crystal Palace and also at Platform 5 at New Cross Gate for northbound services.
This doesn't explain why New Cross (South Eastern) can't have a DOI already when this wasn't an issue under LUL operated services from there.

On the Watford DC line where it shares with the Bakerloo, could we see LO services only calling at Euston, Queens Park (for Bakerloo), fast to Willesden Junction where LO manage the station, then fast to Headstone Lane and all stations to Watford as the other stations on this line may be closed due to the strike?

The ELL will close between NXG and West Croydon/Crystal Palace from 2300 on Mon-Thurs this week.
Southern will run existing services and TfL tickets will be accepted at East Croydon.
Any reason why the service is closing early when Southern will continue to run the normal timetable?
