It seems that the Bakerloo Line upgrade has become urgent, with the current trains the oldest in regular UK service costing lots to maintain, with a risk of failure causing fleet stoppage. The quickest and cheapest new trains available are a continuation of the Piccadilly Line build from 2027. But these will require a complete depot rebuild at Stonebridge Park to service the new formations. The cramped site could need to be closed for more than two years, which means the Bakerloo Line will have to close too! To find and develop a new depot site would take longer. A separate build of trains later, even to the same design, would be more costly. Can a business case for this be justified? Perhaps in the meantime the current fleet could continue to cover a reduced service limited to south of Queen's Park, but with journeys to depot, some via Harrow siding, maintaining use of current infrastructure? There was some mainline land next to Stonebridge Depot, presumably TfL could attempt to purchase this for the new depot.Used to be used to overhaul coaching stock is probably redundant now since the advent of the 390 stock.

Used to be the rule if more than 50% of brake blocks were changed on examination the train had to be shunted round the depot to ensure brakes were working.

The home stick cleared when the rear of the train in the platform passed the starter.

In the early days of the Victoria Line guy was adjusting brake shoes, someone else was doing something on the train that applied the brakes and he kept winding them off, when the train entered service for the evening peak nothing happened when T/Op applied the brakes.

I remember being a Guard on a relatively new westbound D Stock, the Driver called to say we’d need to “Apply the Rule” at two defective home signals at St. James’s Park. While staying on the cab-to-cab we went past the first signal and didn’t get tripped; the driver thought it must’ve cleared as the train went over. Getting ready for the second signal we thought it very odd that the train wasn’t tripped again! Detrained and ran empty, with me in the front cab. Picked up the Area Manager at South Kensington. Tripcock tester at Earl’s Court pfm.3 passed! Trying to think how to test the tripcock, the Area Manager gave authority to enter Ravenscourt Park station at speed as the automatic starting signal had a timing relay for non-stopping trains (station was closed on Sunday). All three of us were amazed when the red signal zoomed past without the train being tripped! An incorrectly fitted air valve was the cause and required a fleet wide inspection. (D Stock had pressure-switch tripcocks). Had the same thing happen on the Central back in the day, train failed to trip applying the rule, the chamber at the top of the tripcock had worked loose.Chap that signed it off as tested demoted to cleaner for two years.

Apart from battery & sleet locomotives the oldest stock I worked on was 35TS prototypes which worked the Epping-Ongar shuttles.

It’s been 13 years since I retired from the Underground,do they still use TOMAS(Train operations and scheduling)or has a new system superseded it?

Consol lamps were white light, the lamp holders originally had slot screw tops which quickly became distorted which made them difficult to remove. They were later replaced with holders with gnurled tops which made it easier for changing lamps.

That’s right they used to drop it to around 10psi then hold it for short while to make sure train line held steady no leaks.

ATOs had duties that consisted of assisting with prep on a certain number of trains entering service. The ATO taking the train into service would charge up the train line then put the CTBC into lap,the assisting ATO would walk through train making sure the PA was working in all cars, when he got to the rear cab he would contact the ATO in the leading cab he’d then operate the emergency brake handle to drop train line pressure. When pressure was exhausted he’d put the handle back to release and check with the leading cab the train line had dropped, the leading ATO would then put the CBTC back to off & release, both ATOs would make sure the train line recharges both ends the the rear ATO walks back checking that brakes have released on all cars.Hope that helps.

Was this envisaged when the depot was built? How was there so much undercover space? Possibly as they put in a connection to the main line. When the 62TS was on the Central Ruislip didn’t do any planned lifting maintenance only casualty lifts. All programme lifts were done at Hainault. On the WTT at the time a depot almost as big as Neasden only put 14 trains into service, most of the room was taken up by new/scrap stock.

Question. Possibly daft. Maybe I have misunderstood something. But here goes. When was the link at Ruislip opened between Central and Met ? I thought it was c.1970 ? Not there when A60 stock was delivered ? If not, was Ruislip really the main line destination for delivery trains from Cravens, would they not, if the link were not there, simply have gone direct to Neasden ? I can see some sense in tube gauge stock e.g. from MetCam going to Ruislip, but why would surface gauge stock be delivered there when there was, at the time, no LT surface gauge escape route ? Did A60 come back out of Ruislip on to BR main line then back to LT somewhere ? Or have I got something fundamentally wrong here ? Ruislip was the depot for new stock commissioning at the time, stock came from the builders just bodies and bogies, motors, compressors ,MAs & shogear was fitted at Ruislip.

The GC was still in existence then, could probably go direct to Ruislip from Sheffield.

Think it’s being exacerbated by shortage of T/Ops.
