There is now a poster up at New Cross Gate station stating that trial operations are starting and therefore passengers may see trains running and possibly at stations with their doors open but they are not in service.

I had a ride over this on Saturday and something caught both myself and the other passengers in the leading car by surprise... Arriving at Euston the leading set of doors did not open but there was no prior warning announcement. Should there have been?

Noted today that the ELL track in platform 1 at New Cross Gate has now been put correctly in place and welded up to the NR track.
The temporary stopping board has been moved further northbound in P1 - I presume so that the ELL test trains don't get to close to the real punters and confuse them?
NXG is now also sporting a single solitary London Overground style platform station name board.
I noticed that the old LUL PIS is style hanging under the canopy of P1/2, is this going to be removed or will it be used by the L.O services?
{edited to change ...removed and will... to ...removed or will...}

You might run into copyright problems.... However, you've said upthread that you are aware of them. Looking at the feeds TfL does make available - www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/businessandpartners/syndication/user-guide.aspx, some of them say the use of the TfL logo is optional so it might not be a problem. However, live service status isn't among one of these feeds. Most odd. Simon

Electric trains on the H&C began on 05.11.06 and uncoupling began on the H&C from 01.01.08. The H&C was only electrified in 2006? Surely not? ;D ;D Simon

Thread drift coming up? Come 2012 and you won't (hopefully) need that old fashioned Oyster thingy... www.transportbriefing.co.uk/news/story?id=6398Check the time line and the entries for EMV for 2011 & 2012. A quick Google revealed EMV is payment by credit/debit card. Simon

378driver or anyone else in the know,
Following on from a question on the Southernrailway Yahoo Group, can you advise how the 378s are delivered to the depot at New Cross Gate? Do they run via platform 5 at NXG & the flyover or via platform 1 (where the rails aren't clamped down)?
Many thanks in advance,
Simon

378004 was running out by New Cross Gate station this morning (0840) - the first time I've noticed one testing around the yard. I've seen a 378 at the northern end of NXG twice now, both times around 18:00. Am I right in thinking that they can't yet run into platform 1 at New Cross Gate due to the track still being splayed i.e. no protection from derailing? Simon

I thought the platform advert projectors were meant to switch off when a train approached the platform? I was on a Northern CX branch train this morning and the platform projector was still projecting while the train was stationary in the platform. I think Euston was the station in question but I could be mistaken.

LOROL seemed to increase it's presence at NXG yesterday. The ticket stock now has the TfL Roundel on it, the credit card machine said LOROL and the AwfullySlowFare machines were presenting a LOROL theme on their displays rather than the previous Southern theme.
Chris, Did you get a picture of the sign on the credit card only machine which says no money is kept in it over night?
Oh, and the evening use of the ticket gates seems to be to keep the narrow (normal) gates closed i.e. normal operation and leave the wide gate open. I'm glad the network is now more secure.....

Indeed, but since this unit had A) Been running round Kent all day on test & was still warm... B) Was being towed between Chart Leacon, Redhill & London Bridge, all regular Elecrostar haunts, C) Been running round Kent all day on test D) Was being towed between Chart Leacon, Redhill & London bridge, all 3rd Rail electrified... Its all the more mystifying.. Just Red tape I guess... Is it possible that New Cross Gate depot wasn't energised and the loco was needed to haul it in there? Simon

Such a connection already exists and has a couple of service trains (in the current timetable 05.58 and 06.11 leave from the low level platform (normally the bay) at Willesden Junction going to Stratford and there is an 23.56 arrival from Stratford. The connection is the 'new line' and runs from the south end of the low level platforms to Kensal Green Junction (also known as High Level Junction); you can see it if you look here on google maps ( maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=17.340293,28.344727&ie=UTF8&hq=willesden+junction&hnear=&t=h&ll=51.532502,-0.241227&spn=0.004445,0.011008&z=17), it is the track under the A404 bridge Is that the 'low-level' platforms/station as shown on the Google map? ;D ;D ;D Simon

The 'Crossrail Bulletin' has some further information : www.crossrail.co.uk/get_asset/5482/0/0/0/0/0/1Paddington work starts WORK is starting at Paddington, which will transform this gateway into London. This includes major restoration of part of the station roof, start of work for Crossrail, and refurbishment of the Hammersmith and City (H&C) line station. Network Rail has already begun restoration work on the section of the Edwardian roof above platforms nine to 12. This involves repairing the metalwork and replacing the glass, letting light flood back in for a lighter, brighter station. As a result of the Crossrail works, Paddington will also benefit from a modern, step-free entrance on the canal side, with access to the new taxi facility which will be relocated to between the main line station and the canal. The H&C station will also be completely refurbished to include a new station entrance from the Paddington Basin, with a bigger station concourse, including a new ticket office and ticket gates. There will also be step-free access to the mainline and H&C line from the new taxi rank. To find out more about the planned improvements visit an exhibition on the concourse at Paddington station : 23/24 Sept from 8am to 8.30pm, 25 Sept 8am to 6pm, 26 Sept 10am - 2pm. This URL www.crossrail.co.uk/get_asset/4768/0/0/0/0/0/1 shows the lay of the land at Paddington with the Bakerloo line shown in relation to the main station (also shown is the post office railway). So I guess a link could, in theory, be provided but I don't think it is currently planned. Simon

I wonder if *any* of these stations will ever get new LO signage installed? IIRC LO is now nearly two years' old and they haven't managed to re-sign or fully refurbish a single station yet. The two stations with new (permanent) roundel signs are both new-build, one for Silverlink and other still not open. There were some signs of rebranding at New Cross Gate today.... The Southern logo adjacent to the entrance had been covered over and the woman in the ticket office was wearing a London Overground jumper and name badge. A PA announcement was in the form of "This is the Southern Railway control centre on behalf of London Overground......" There was also a notice in the ticket office window saying that due to the transfer it would not be possible after 19th Sept. (?) to buy Oyster season tickets from there. AFAIK you couldn't anyway. Gates wide open and unmanned both times I went through the station. Tracks splayed still in Platform 1, which incidentally has had a chunk taken out of it at the northern end to make way for some buffer stops on a siding from the depot. (I wonder how they will increase these platforms to 10 car now?) Conductor rail visible on all newly laid track including the flyover, which as posted earlier is now fenceless but does have a woodblock across the tracks. Simon

According to crossrail news crossrailnews.co.uk/nav/news.php?id=6165, Crossrail have awarded a design contract for the north side of Paddington station. I'm not too sure of the geography of the Bakerloo line station here but would there be any space for a platform to new-north-exit link? TIA Simon

Posting here as it seems a good a place as any.....
New Cross Gate now has gates and a double-width 'fence' (to prevent jumping?) but the gates have been open so far, I'll go and see if that has now changed under LO ownership today. The quick-ticket machine didn't have the Oyster pad yesterday.
The fencing across the throat of the new ELLE flyover at NXG was gone by yesterday, it was in place last weekend. I shall check the track at platform 1 and see if it is still splayed or has been re-joined. There were lots of workmen present on the other side of the tracks in the depot area - I can't recall seeing them working on a Saturday before.
The quick ticket machine at Queens Road Peckham does have the Oyster pad and a sticker above it saying PAYG isn't valid on services from this station.
I curious as to why Victoria - Balham PayG hasn't been extended to Streatham Common seeing as that is now gated and in the most part operational.

<snip>To put t/ops back on a station would require (re)training them for the actual station involved - AND paying them t/op pay for doing CSA. And that's before any union intervention. <snip> As opposed to paying them t/op pay for doing ???? during a shutdown? Maybe they could be trained during one of the shutdowns and be paid t/op pay for it....... Simon <hoping he's done the quotes correctly in amongst all the snipping.>

Is this the Central line sandite unit, or something along those lines? Interesting to see a 59/62ts in corporate livery! The doors still stand out despite the notices, so I'm surprised they haven't painted the tops of the doors in the same gray as the roof. Simon

Reported by Marc Ely on UK Modern group that a 378 move is booked this evening from Derby to New Cross Gate (arr 00:53) More reports now quoting 378001 - how about this one, having presumably completed its test and mileage accumulation running on its previous stay, now being the unit for testing and commissioning the ELL? If this did happen, does anyone know how it got to New Cross Gate (depot?)? Would it have got on the ELL from the north or from the south - fairly certain it wouldn't have been via platform one at NXG. TIA Simon

Can I add another bit of constructive criticism please?
Isn't the "2 min walk" between Canary Wharf and Heron Quay meant to point the Jubliee Line station at CW?
Also, would keeping all the zone numbers in one row along the bottom be clearer?

At New Cross Gate they've installed the new entrance onto New Cross Road and the new new level(-ish) access onto platform 5 and both have been painted in Southern light green. Wouldn't it have made more sense to paint them in LOROL orange?

But what we want/need to know is if PayG Oyster fare on NR will count towards the daily price cap? If not, I'll stick to the Z1-6 paper travelcard - if there will be Oyster agents left selling them in New Cross by then, quite a few already only do Z1-4. Simon
