I originally posted this link to the Tubegroup Yahoo group back in March..... ted.europa.eu/udl?uri=TED:NOTICE:72692-2009:TEXT:EN:HTML"Short description of the contract or purchase(s): The Service Provider will be required to undertake a preliminary rolling stock design, in sufficient detail, to demonstrate compliance with LUL's future rolling stock requirements. The purpose of the study is to validate the investment business case for a modern rolling stock design. The study will inform LUL's future procurement and asset renewal strategies for Bakerloo (2018/2020), Central line (2020/2033); and in the longer term other LUL rolling stock." "Total quantity or scope: — Deliver a rolling stock design concept that meet LUL's business objectives (specifically optimised for capacity, energy consumption, reliability and whole life 'system' costs), — Deliver a logical, consistent and comprehensive set of documents that describe the rolling stock concept and associated performance characteristics, — Develop High level programme - award of contract to new fleet introduction, — Quantified technology and delivery risks register associated with the design and implementation programme."

What decides which company operates a station? I'd imagined that the operator with the most services calling at a station would operate it but if that were / is the case, why would London Overground be taking over Norwood Junction? Surely Southern will still have more services there?

According to a post on the SouthernRailway Yahoo group, FCC have withdrawn their 377/5s from service today due to a fault. Anyone know more? I hope the same won't affect the 378s.

How will the map cope if/when CrossRail is completed? Won't the Liverpool Street* CR station actually link Liverpool Street and Moorgate stations? ISTR there is another CR station that will link two two other stations.
* Name not confirmed.

This week's 'Rail Management' from Keeping Track 91.186.0.3/~keepingt/rm/197/RMAN_197.pdf has an article on the East London Line extension. It says work is still going to plan so that test running can begin in January but train delays are still ongoing.... "But although Neil Harvey of Bombardier agreed that although 378 deliveries are also running late, with just four three-car sets having been delivered to date, the company was confident that TfL’s requirements would be met. He added: ‘We are continuing to work closely with our suppliers." " There are three pics altogether, Dalston Junctiion station box, the Thames Tunnel from the south and further in the magazine, an interior shot of the New Cross depot - which it says should be ready to receive stock in the next few weeks. Wasn't there a recent Network Rail RUS that suggested an extension of Crossrail to Gravesend would be a good idea? I think it said that due to the complexities of installing OHLE beyond Abbey Wood that the Crossrail stock would need to be dual voltage.
I've not read it yet but doesn't the (new) Sussex RUS mention a tunnel from Clapham Junction possibly linking into Crossrail?

Hmm, this is a possibility. But seeing as finite periods have been given too the PPP firms and for every day they run late, penalty fines can and may well be imposed, it seems rather unlikely. Dates for completion: Jub: completed Dec 2009 Northern Upgrade pt 1: completed Jan 2012 Vic: 2012 (presumably before the Olympics) Pic: 2014 Northern SSL: 2016 Southern SSL: 2018 Bakerloo: 2020 Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but in terms of the overall LU infrastructure, 11 years doesn't sound too long. <snip> 11 years? Doesn't sound a lot but what's that work out as, nearly a quarter of someone's working life? (start work at 20, retire at 65) After 2020 it must then be the Central's time again (I think there's already been an OJ-S tender for proposals for Central rolling stock). Forth bridge is right....... Simon

C stock is made up of 2 car units, so there will always be a cab in the middle - of course the Bakerloo's 72ts and the Met's A stocks are also similar in that they always have cabs in the middle, though I wouldn't profess to know if they have similar installations. In fact I wouldn't have thought the A stock would as they always have two middle cabs (Chesham shuttle excepted) and one would have to get past either J door first, which of course will have a glass cover anyway as it's a common standard on LU. Since starting a 'new' job at Paddington I've been using the Bakerloo and normally sitting in the carriage adjoining the middle cab and I can confirm they do have the glass cover over the handle. In most scenarios where a glass cover is over something there are also normally signs advising you not to break it with your bare hand - hammers often being provided but no warnings or hammers on LUL. Sorry if it's been covered before but will the two lines/systems be compatable?

Ipods are the worst thing in the world on trains - they should be banned! I laughed at some man once. I think he was going to somewhere on the Hainault branch, and the train got diverted via Woodford. Of course, dim Ipod user didn't hear the announcement, ended up at Snaresbrook, didn't look too impressed. <snip> I had that on the Bakerloo a few months back, the train op announced Waterloo was closed due to an Elephant on the platform or something but the headphone brigade missed it. As we crawled through the platform I told them the station was closed but still got the 'WTF?' looks. The headphone brigade are good for a laugh when they miss announcements. The CrackBerry addicts and 'Must read paper/book' while walking are a bigger pain though. Simon

Prompted by reading this thread, I've just checked my journey history for this week as I got a 'Seek assistance' at Paddington on Thursday morning. Lo and behold, not once has it registered an exit at Paddington for any of my four E&C-Paddington journeys this week. I'll ring the Oyster helpline in the morning but are there problems with the gates at Paddington?
EDIT: After spending half an hour with Excel I realised that my online journey history is correctly costed but just displayed rather wierdly, as above it hasn't displayed any entries or exits at Paddington but has charged the correct fare and some bus journey fares are shown as a £1 credit rather than a £1 debit but still with £1 being deducted from the total balance. And they still haven't got the 'Price cap' column working again.
TIA

The order the JLE opened....didnt think of that one MRFS! <snip> At a guess for some of the oddities though, the jubilee to CX is still used by revenue trains for reversing, whilst Aldwych isnt atall. The north curve at Park Jnct. had the earth works completed pre LT, but never had track laid. Perhaps LT would have finished it; it would have given a quick way to turn 'wrong way' trains for formation at Wellington, or even Edgware/Aldenham. <snip> Sorry, newbie question..... Did/does the Jubilee really extend beyond Charing Cross to(wards) Aldwych? TIA, Simon

I thought Tubelines maintains all the tracks between Wembley Pk and Finchley Road? See the "BCV", "SSL" and "Tubelines" maps at www.cryptart.com/tube/ What purpose did/does the 'coded map' serve and why does it show proposed lines/extensions such as the Bakerloo to Camberwell? TIA Simon
