I was there today, on the eastbound one platform had an Upminster and the other platform had a Tower Hill. The 'first train' message pointed to the Upminster train
But it was the Tower Hill that arrived first, and left first (albeit after the Upminster had arrived).
The Upminster train started departing whilst the Tower Hill was slowly leaving the station, and whilst I could not see clearly (I was on the platform and the sightline beyond the platform end is largely blocked) it looked like the Tower Hill train stopped outside the station to let the Upminster train pass!

So 'First Train Out' was untrue, although the implication that it was first train to next station was! Does that indicator still operate when one of the trains is for High Street and beyond? Does it operate when there is only one train around? Or only when there is a challenging choice of two trains to the District main line?

So the first train indicator was working correctly then!
What it actually means is “the first train to arrive at Gloucester Road will be……”
Granted that’s not what it says but I think it’s the better message for simplicity. No doubt a discussion will now follow deciding what should really be displayed.
Who wants the tin opener for that can of worms?

SDoes that indicator still operate when one of the trains is for High Street and beyond? It never has worked for a High Street bound train as you can't have two trains departing at the same time towards there. Does it operate when there is only one train around? No, as it'd be a pointless message.

Best left 'as is' - the signs are in place & working, changes will cost money and for this I would not be willing to put even a shilling in the cap that would need passing around because TfL is skint! btw, whilst trains to High Street Ken (HSK) / Edgware Road will usually come from the Wimbledon branch (and hopefully will be far enough apart for only one of them to be at Earls Court at a time) there are times when trains from other western destinations* travel to HSK and perhaps even beyond. For these situations a 'first train out' message would be welcomed - especially by passengers going to HSK, or willing to chance that a Circle will come to HSK before the other train that is at Earls Court gets to HSK. *Olympia, Richmond, Ealing depot / Broadway, etc...
