You may be interested in the following extract from an email I've received - slightly edited.....
"I’ve sent a description of what has been agreed with LUL for the refurbishment of 17008 to xxxxxxxx. It’ll go away early December and take quite a while to refurb. It will come back as probably the last one delivered. So the last silver train in service will actually be all silver. That will also be goodbye to strap hangers, silver grab poles, wood floors, traditional LU armrests, orange and brown décor (at least for now)."
I'll try to get details of the work planned for 17008 and the rest of the unit.

On the subject of a farewell to the last non-refurb full train, I had a brief discussion about this today with a 'Power that Be'. I'm told that this is still very much on the cards as being a 'special' - a good number of people recognise it's a passing of note. Rest assured that we will probably be very early in the list of those 'in the know' here!! I hope they varnish the floors for the occasion, to show the train at it's best, but I somehow think they won't on a cost basis.

Refurbish a non-refurb, now there's an interesting concept......

For the life of me i can't remember wht unit it was. I think 8000. Having some weird metal paneling round the tranverse seating, but i think that unit had a vanished floor?? One carrage certainly did last year from what i remember. I am gonna miss these trains. Hopefully since the D78 wasn't the first choice for most tube fanatics we shall all get a seat!!

I am gonna miss these trains. Look on the bright side James, at least they'll be on the network in one form or another. I remember when the 59's were being withdrawn, and when I got off one back in 2000, watching it going down the tunnel knowing I'd never get to ride one again. I still miss them now, and the 38TS tour in June gave me quite a few memories (I know it's not a 59, but had a few characteristics which are very similar).

7000-17000-8000 had some experimental panels. I especially like the colour around the J door. Grey IIRC but did something to make the bulkhead look a lot cleaner. I've got some pictures somewhere. . . Edit, I lie, it was cream. I've put some pictures on my Fpic site wayneprice5870.fotopic.netGive it a couple of hours to get published, but I've put them in a new folder called D stock unit 7000

Is it just me.. or are the doors on the refurbs easier to open now? IE if someone shoves there hand in as its closing they seem to be able to force it open letting all there friends on whereas before I seem to remember it was almost impossible to force the door open.

I don't think much was done to the door mechanisms on refurb. The top door runners were changed during a 'mods package' a few years ago which made the doors 'smoother' in operation and less easy to derail from the runner as had been the case before.

I know i know, but it still won't be the same. Theres just something about hoping on an un-refurbed D stock. I think they lost alot of appeal when they got rid of the checker seats. But before that the leather went!

In fact we are now down to only 9 (or posible even 8 by the time I type this) unrefurbished. But on Staurday both my trains were non-refubs! :-(

Does anyone know which units will be nominated as the last ones to run in unrefurbished form?

Yes apologies for this, I was trying to keep things simple by listing them in:- west end- east end- double- order, but this didn't seem to work. I will try and minimise the wrong info that is creeping into my list. A certain 7080 was removed from Ealing Common this morning, I still have my black armbands on .

A certain 7080 was removed from Ealing Common this morning, I still have my black armbands on . I saw it disappearing into the depths of the depot yesterday and wondered if it was destined for Derby; don't worry - I'm sure thay'll take care of it for you

Having looked at the list of those due to go soon ...the final train appears as if it will be comprised of two of the following six units (being the six outstanding from the list)
7040 west
7530 double 7534 double
7097 east 7103 east 7115 east
So 7040 looks to be the last "A" end single ended unit.
