How many refurbs are there now? because I counted at least 6 of them going westbound at about 10 O'Clock I was on one going eastbound and when I left Upminster there was one arriving and that was not counting prototype. so does anybody know how many there are now?

I believe we're now up to eight in service; there may be another in ECMDT for commissioning but I'm not sure as I'm on A/L.
I think solidbond told me they're now returning at a train a fortnight.

Thanks Dave I thought I was going mental seeing all these refurbs. so by the time the ' Link ' is installed at Upminster ( if it ever happens ) we could well have nearly half the fleet refurbed makes you wonder if thats why they are taking their time doesn't it

I suspect that the link at Upminster is far more likely to be used by the GBRf 66s.

Sadly, at least one of our refurbs was covered in external grafitti this evening. In fact almost half the fleet seemed to have been attacked by the low life scum... Every train I passed after about 10pm had grafitti scrawled all over the outside.

Ah now that would explain it! I bumped into Jim the other evening, and it was this train, and still had the 'new train' smell about it, whoich would be right, seeing as it is fairly new back then! They are certainly looking nice, that new cab seat looks quite comfortable, as is the new Instructors seat!

What are the criteria for the withdrawal of unrefurbished D stock for refurbishment? Motorman once said that the fitters were literally taking the intra-car couplers apart before he had walked away from a train he has just stabled at Upminster.

Where do most of the refurbs operate? I've got a day off school tommorow, and as well as riding the 159 routemasters,I hopw to ride the refurbs.

The refurbs are cleared for all District Line diagrams and can be found almost anywhere.

Earl's Court seems like the best place as (almost) all District Line services pass through you're bound to see one sooner or later.

For my pennorth and what little I have experienced I prefer the 'D' s BEFORE they were mucked about with. All those new bumnum seats and arty farty grab bars have spoiled them. The only decent things about the tittification are the new colour scheme and interirior DM displays. As for 'Gabbling Gertie' the sooner she's shot the better!

Absolutely, I've never been a 'refurb' fan of any stock. IMHO given more money to spend on the D stock refurbs It could of been even more drastic, at least the seating arrangement is basically the same and the opening windows have been retained.

IMHO, what they have done has been good, and they now look quite smart, seeing as most of the unrefurbs are starting to look very tatty. I wouldnt say that the seats are hard, i have found them quite soft, admitenly they are harder than the likes of the 73ts, but thats life. I have to say that the quality of the refurb compared to other stocks is very good, and isnt far behind the 73ts which i think has been the best; for the passenger and Train Operator.

Oh come on Met App this 'refurb' is a complete mess and a waste of money! But then again we are all used to you having your own opinion about everything aren't we? All it is is a bloody big PR excercise to boost egos. All that was needed was a good clean and a paint job. Anybody that can see any real merit is this useless fiasco must want there head tested. The stock while reliable has always looked ugly anyway and to prettify them just for another 7 years is a waste of cash.

Q8 has a point, it does seem a waste of money when the S Stock will be coming so soon. Could've just left the trains as they are (with a coat of paint added to bring them in line with the rest of the fleet) and spent the money on the S Stock or something else. Alas, Final Score: Bureaucracy 1-0 Common Sense

I would disagree. There will still be D stocks around for 9-10years. Would you really want to still be riding (or driving) unrefurbished D-stocks in 9 years? The D stocks were in need of a refurb, and the door alarms, passenger information displays, and end windows are all major improvements which could not have come sooner!

Stephenk I would disaggree with you also. In the past the public happily rode around in and drivers contentedly pushed along stock that was 40 years old that was giving perfectly adequate service albiet with a bit more attention as they aged.
The public don't give a toss really what sort of train it is as long as one turns up for their journey. It should be dry and warm and reasonably comfortable with good ventilation and windows they can see out of.
A driver wants a cab that he has a decent seat in, that everything he needs is close to hand and he has a a nice heater to keep it warm in winter [preferably one that does not make a bloody noise] and side windows he can open for a cross draught in the summer.
So to spend all this money on fripperies and pretty light displays defies logic to my mind. As for that damn woman clapping on with 'this is....' it would have caused a strike in my time. Do they not realise that a driver has enough to do concentrating on his job properly without the distraction of Gabbling Gertie?

Unfortunately Q8, while I do agree with you on some points, I am with the majority in my opinion of the refurbishment of the D stock. I also think it's a good refurbishment, although the DVA does tend to drive you absolutely sideways...

I too think it's worth the time, money and effort.
And I think too that having been done so long into it's service life (and a relatively short time before replacement) it's actually worked to our advantage, in that they haven't done all the technical 'fiddling' that they did with the 73's.
It is of course worth remembering that it was long overdue and should have been done at least five years ago, but the money was spent on the JLE!!
Whilst I take q8's points, I think many of the things he's reservations about (and I do understand those) are now considered the 'norm' - the dot matrix displays, the announcer (which actually on the D's isn't 'cab intrusive' in the way it is on many other stocks) and the disabled areas etc. And of course the floors had to be changed, and the under car condition was not great either; all these did need genuine attention, so the work done is far more than a cosmetic tart up!!

I do accept your comments Dave and TOK but would it not have been better for Metronet to go to Mr Brown and say
'Nah look 'ere old cock, all our trains are in a clapped out state and we need new ones ASAP. Give us the dosh so we can buy a new fleet and get rid of the old stuff. We'll buy trains that will last for 50-60 years with one half life refurb so you gets value for money' That way the whole fleet would have been new in time for the Olympics.
