By the way, there has been a suggestion (from someone in Metronet!) that LU should mark the last silver train on the Underground in some way. But don't hold your breath! I put forward a proposal for this some time ago - and right up to the Line General Manager. I need to remind the powers that be about it, once I can get an accurate idea of when the last non-refurb is due to be withdrawn from service. Time will tell - and I'm saying no more about my idea!

I was on 7012 last night and noticed some of the floor vinyl has started to lift. This unit has been refurbed just over a year ago, so I wonder if we will see a lot more of this.

Have they just glued it over the old maple slats? No, the old slats are gone, I think the vinyl flooring is glued over a plywood base.

I am hearing from a source that unit 7008 will go away for refurbishment in mid-December and will be the very last unit to return because of the complexities involved in it's transformation.
So there will be a full "last silver train" running around after all !

I wish 7100 (The Silver Streak) was to be last to be done ! This unit in my time has always been a superb (very fast) performer ...and it has good brakes ! I love getting this one (Though I gather stopping, or lack of lead to it's name !) Sadly i think i saw a list in which it is down to go soon !

Once bombardier have had their mitts on it, you may achieve 20 mph in it, eventually. ;D ;D

I actually drove a refirb (yes, I occasionally drive trains ;D ) yesterday that felt like a non refirb in terms of acceleration. it was a pleasure to drive. I won't tell Bombardier or they'll want to fix it. ;D ;D

They weigh more due to extra stuff like cab air con, CCTV equipment, paint, etc - the effect on acceleration from standstill is noticeable compared to a non-refurb.

I'm sure that if the motors were overhauled, it wouldn't be an issue. However until hell freezes over we're stuck with slow trains.

Are they slow enought to affect the service??

On the subject of a farewell to the last non-refurb full train, I had a brief discussion about this today with a 'Power that Be'.
I'm told that this is still very much on the cards as being a 'special' - a good number of people recognise it's a passing of note.
Rest assured that we will probably be very early in the list of those 'in the know' here!!

Are they slow enought to affect the service?? Not really as there is 'slack' built into the timetable.

How about a railtour along the lines of the Metroliner tour in 1980? Get 60mph of them while we still can. ;D

Only around 5 months of Silver reliable D's left then. Get on them quick. I doubt it will be that long, if previous stock replacements are anything to go by. Once their is 3 or 4 trains left, they will be left in the depot and only be put in service as a last resort, the last few will also be always run as Ealing Common stablers as this is the depot where they are being removed from. My guess is that apart from any special event you won't see a non refurb in service after Janurary.

With 3 trains away at any one time all resources are out on the road so I think on this occasion they'll be out until last knockings. Saying that though, Monday to Friday only is a plan that could work and as you say Jim they could put them on inter peak stablers only, but this means that they'll be in service for all but 4 to 5 hours of the traffic day.

Well i plan to go on a farewell tour of my own soon. When is the best time to do this before i would be out of time? I plan to do a whole trip through the entire District line on a refrub. I am gonna miss the character. Though i must admit i do feel safer at night on a refurb.
