I think they'd probably want more vehicles in the consist so there are sufficient wheels that the train isn't insulated from track circuits. I'm not sure if there are any vehicles other than A stock cars that can couple directly to an intermediate A stock vehicle?

"faults have been found on the RAT train, 5110: No MA indication and no Speedo or Speed Control after Tripping. 5111 Audible Warning on Application and no Speedo or Speed Control after Tripping" So, what stops the entire unit being dragged around by battery locos?

I would suspect non compatibility on the braking systems, also audible warning on application could mean a brake defect.

And I just saw it heading south at Ricky. Could do with a clean!
But lovely to see an A Stock still trundling around Metroland.

Almost certainly the Network Rail railhead treatment train, which sprays jets of water onto the railhead to remove leaf build-up.

Presuming it works beyond Amersham on the Chiltern. But where would it reverse? Neasden? I've never seen it south of Ricky. From earlier in the thread: According to the latest Traffic Circular: The leaf fall season starts on Sunday 2 October 2016 and is booked to finish on Friday December 23 2016. The following arrangements during this period will take effect: [...] – Network Rail railhead treatment train (RHTT) will operate between Harrow boundary and Mantles Wood boundary (north of Amersham) - details below. Please note: While the most difficult leaf fall conditions mainly affect the area north of Moor Park, leaf mulch can build up on the railhead anywhere where loose leaf litter is present. In other words it works through to Harrow-on-the-Hill and then gets on its merry way to Neasden South Junction and National Rail. Dunno where it goes from there, it may work down to Marylebone. The only other alternative is to reverse on the mainline and work back to Wembley LMD or Wembley Stadium.

I believe the A stock RAT is all self contained, so it would just require power.

Saw the RAT entering Neasden depot on Saturday, then today it was at Harrow on the Hill in the siding (I was on P1 waiting for a Chiltern), it then came out of the siding onto P4. Brings back memories of taking the A stock into London when I was younger!

A Stock RAT heading through Ricky 20/10/16
It went through 2 mins before my Chiltern came in, but we didn't pass it until I saw it heading into Neasden depot.
So it must have cained it down the fast lines.
How fast is it allowed to go?

not sure about line speed. Line speed was reduced to 50 because of the condition/age of the A stock, but line speed is now 60 in many areas.

Some pics of the A Stock RAT at HOTH tonight, including through the window of the sandite carriage.
Loved seeing it come into the platform from the siding. The sounds it makes takes me back to my childhood.
Couldn't work out any other way of posting the pics, so I tweeted them.

Yesterday, I heard an announcement on a platform at Rayner's Lane, announcing that the next train was not in service. Then an A stock passed by! Can anyone explain please?

Sorry if my attempt at facetiousness was taken the wrong way - the Rail Adhesion Train (usually known by its initials) is a former A-stock unit trundling around open-air parts of the network spraying special gunge on the rails to make them less slippery during what the railways call the leaf-fall season and everyone else calls autumn. Discussed in more detail further back along the thread.

It's ok, thank you for explaining what you meant, I did go back and have a look at some of the earlier posts and now I understand more about the RAT trains.

Saw it go through Northwood tonight and saw it reverse S-N at Harrow. Had a quick chat with the driver at Harrow. Great to see her out and about if only for a few more weeks 😔
