Thanks for the usual excellent pictures, Chris W!
Was great to meet everyone I got to speak to! Although it felt like a bit of a slow start without much excitement, the latter half of the day ended up wonderful.
Sorry I had to dash without even saying goodbye to many of you. Had to try and get to Colindale by 6pm. Yeah.. 6pm.

And with the end of D stock operation, we lose a link with this site's founder, as I doubt Dave ever drove the S-stock.

That was a fun lunch break sorting through the last of the 1000 images....
The best of the images... 317, some of which have been slightly tweaked, are now up on Flickr and can be found...
HERE
Images include some of my side hobby.... trainspotter spotting and document the day on board...
There are images of members... a forum Consultant or two (including Colin.... sorry I mean Colon ) and Mods too...
I hope you like them.... just beware, I think an image or two of me may find its way online somewhere else....
Be scared.... Be very scared !!
A great set of photos there and even the original T/Op who drove the very first D stock on the first day of service giving the green flag at Ealing Bdy now retired.

Its great that a car has been delivered to the LTM, where I met him for the last time in 2010, prior to his passing a year later....

Wait until you're nearing your mid-40s, have two children and you need a beer more than once a week Yes, train announcements were on throughout the trip..... its just that we didn't stop that often Also all the drivers introduced themselves, which helped the make the day extra special.... perhaps this should be normal practice..... #### runs away in case he gets abuse from T/Os ####

The D-Stock lives on om a small way on the S-Stock - The Passenger Door Open (PDO) Buttons actually light up on arrival at a station, reminding me of this aspect of D-Stock Operation before refurbishment.

Ah, yes a great set of photos, although I did not see me in any of them! Maybe thats better though. I have a video which has just finished rendering so will be published soon. Six stations, most of which saw the train travelling very slowly, although by comparision it zoomed through Tower Hill. Simon

Most of the train operators early in the day seemed to drive conventionally, travelling slowly through stations whilst waiting the starter to clear, then accelerating normally once it did. This created some confusion amongst those on the platform.
The final train op seemed to take a different approach though. She would slow on the approach to the stations, allowing the train ahead to get clear then draw in confidently and accelerating once the starter cleared, but not accelerating to full line speed so as to prevent catching up with the train in front.

Had an excellent day and numerous photos, although I'm a bit disappointed when that S stock blocked the shot at Ealing Common as she went in. I was hoping to get a longshot of her trailing through the crossover but alas it was never meant to be. A little collaboration with the line controller could have seen that s stock held for 30 seconds before EC; That would have been helpful

Looks like I need to change my name to Colon...... ..... And with the end of D stock operation, we lose a link with this site's founder, as I doubt Dave ever drove the S-stock. The Metropolitan line only had 5 0r 6 S stock's when Dave sadly passed away, so no, as a District driver he never got to drive an S stock.

just beware, I think an image or two of me may find its way online somewhere else.... Just desserts, I'd say. 11-12 years on, and I'm still terrified/anxious of you, your camera, and being chased by both! So enjoy your slow and torturous wait for your mugshot to be developed on 35mm film! The only time I could relax was when the car looked like this!: After the farewell by version3point1, on Flickr

It all depends how close the train was following another though of course. As the train was a extra one in the timetable at programme machine sites the signaller would of had to press a few extra buttons to get the signals to clear.

So enjoy your slow and torturous wait for your mugshot to be developed on 35mm film! You make it sound like I’m the bogey camera man who might sneak up on you at any moment…. I’m sorry, but didn’t realise I was that scary….. but then again I haven’t looked in the mirror for a little while now ~ perhaps I need to check now in case I’ve grown fangs or horns ~ I must admit that I did have a few members (mostly forum staff) sneaking up on me camera in hand, trying to get their own back – I think there’s some evidence in my set of images. My approach at the end of the day, if you can’t take it, you shouldn’t give it in the first place. If anyone is genuinely unhappy with images that are online, or me capturing their image in the first place, just say here or via PM – I don’t bite. If anyone is desperate enough to want to see what I look like, I feel sure that your wish will soon come true. However I’m not to be held responsible for the nightmares that you may experience soon after….. There’s a reason why I’m normally behind, rather than in front of, the lens

The slow progress through the stations was done as a courtesy to all the photographers out and about. It did have the added benefit of enabling us to match the speed of the train in front 😉

Thanks trainop78.
I'm sure it'll be reassuring to marry enthusiasts that there are LU staff who appreciate and even share an interest and unity with photographers.

I was pleased to see myself demonstrating the correct procedure of boarding a D Stock, in Chris' picture taken at HSK! I enjoyed looking through the other pictures and video too - it's great to see how things looked from both an external perspective, and from the different cars. My own photographs and video are now online, and can be viewed here. Out of interest, what is the lever located in the ceiling, to the side of the cab light (pictured in the fourth of my cab photographs)? I assume that it's not the light switch, as that is on the pillar to the left of the driving console. Finally, just to echo what others have said - a big "thank-you" to all who had any part to play in the tour - we enthusiasts all just turned up and (hopefully!) enjoyed it, but I appreciate that there must be so much that happens, by so many people, behind the scenes that we never see, but without which, the tour wouldn't have taken place at all - it was certainly worth my being up for 18 hours...I slept well that night!

I assume that it's not the light switch, as that is on the pillar to the left of the driving console. The lever had more relevance before the trains were refurbished and had air-cooling for the cab installed. Before the six air-cooling vents were installed there were two globe vents, these collected air from outside. By moving the lever, this directed air from the grille above the destination box, either into the saloon or down into the cab vents and roof mounted heater to prevent this from overheating. (ps. A slight correction to your photograph captions, D Stock have a TCIS Tripcock Isolating Switch, not a cock as it is purely electrical)

Thank you very much for that information - I've added and amended the text as necessary. I was going to ask which, out of the passengers or the heater, would be more needing of the additional air circulation, though I suppose that the heater would only be operating in colder weather anyway, when passengers would welcome the additional heat!
[On a side note, I've just re-watched the 'East London and District' Driver's Eye View, in order to experience the tour again, in a fashion...whilst watching, it occurred to me that all of the train stocks featured on this (along with, sadly, our very own District Dave himself) are no longer seen on LU metals - and that was recorded only 12 years ago...how things change.]

Getting back to the tour, however mundane that might seem, I noticed when photographing the last three trains in Ealing Common (from a passing train, after it was all over that evening) that 7526 also had a green headboard fitted. Presumably that indicates that it was in reserve for the tour if something went wrong with 7007/32. Does anyone have the background on this?
