Hey folks, Just a quick thank you for all the discussion and pointers and explanations. A couple of you disputed what I was actually asking, but now I look back I can see that my question was indeed quite wooly - so all answers good IMHO I might have some more questions later ;D but wanted to at least acknowledge you all for putting in the effort

Bonjour,
quessie about the t/t wires. Two, in fact!
Are they still in use to communicate to line controllers in the event of emergencies, or has it all been superseded by the train radio system?
Are they still in use to de-energise traction current sections?

Last week I came across a couple of old emails stating that Oyster refund uploads had failed, probably because I don't visit London as much as I used to. I called the Helpline on Friday to find out if I could get them added back on again. Oh yes, came the reply, no problem at all. Saturday came and the upload was activated at Acton Town - job done. Hooray!

Evening folks,
In two or three books I have, reference is made to a different company (from the Metropolitan) being formed who built the Ham & City. What was that company called?
Thanks!

I'd like to revive this thread, if I may? I would love to know why the 420/210 and not 315/315 or 483.7/146.3 or any other random split! I'm also fully aware that the neg is 1.5" above running rail height and the pos is 3" - double the height *and* double the voltage. But I still don't get why! Please explain in words of 2 syllables or less. I'm a bit fick, me. PS Thanks to all previous contributors to the thread - I've learnt a lot already

I'm fairly sure one of them is Chancery Lane, but with both pics having steps going down, I can't say if it's the landscape one or the portrait!
(And no - I haven't been told the answers.)

Hey folks, Just came across this link: has a link to a .tif file of the original plans of the C&SLR - as designed by Greathead himself. To say I'm stunned is an understatement!

Goodge Street and Arsenal may have very small frontages, but how far back do they go? Looking on multimap's aerial view (and google streetview to verify I'm looking at the right building) Arsenal definitely goes back a huge way. It's the width of two houses and goes back about 3 times as far as the surrounding houses - about 6 times the size of the houses immediately to left and right. Goodge Street looks to be three times the width of neighbouring properties, and is about 2½ times as deep (from front to back).

...the carriage and loco lift that was installed to replace the incline [at Stockwell]... really found a use during the reconstruction when it was used to raise a lot of the spoil from the works in specially built four wheel wagons (one of these wagons is preserved by LTM). So said CSLR a million moons ago; I'm interested - is the wagon in the depot? Just thinking that if it's there, I'll make a special look out for it at the open day next month.

Oh, look at that lower case G! He likes it too, he's done it twice. Don't think much of the other two, though - a bit clumsy in comparison.
I think I get a sort of synaesthesia reaction to good typefaces because quite often they make me think of foods like marzipan and feta cheese and I want to eat them!
Oh. Did I say that out loud?

Thanks for that, johnbull. I wonder why the Mayor's office needs rebranding in the first place? Incidentally, you have a link from the text "where New Johnston holds sway" which points to the same article - where should it lead?

I found a shopping list in the kitchen this morning, created by MRFS after he'd returned from the pub. On it, amongst other things, was "0-gauge trees". I'm presuming he means broccoli! ;D ;D ;D

depending on how large they are, they could be draught excluders, sofa-long cushions, down-the-side-of-the-bed pillows, interesting parcel-shelf accessory for the car... sky's the limit, really!

Do you mean on the head (where the wheels actually pass) or the web (the bit that rises vertically from the foot)? Can't work out what you mean by a hole having a height! (Surely they have a depth?)
