'lo folks, Just been watching iPlayer, a prog about women's roles in the first half of last century. It's here, and at about 14 mins and 38 seconds in, a train scoots past in the background - v brief and only a quick glance. What is it? It certainly looks electrified. Here are a couple of screenshots - MRFS reckons it has the feel of Watford Joint stock. Any ideas?

Actually the mottled effect is called foxing. It is the start of the disintegration of the paper, it can't be reversed but can be stopped by proper treatment and storage. MRFS told me that 'foxing' literally comes from 'ferrous oxide' - so it's kind of rust.

I have been listing some more stuff on eBay for the LT Museum Friends (see here) and came across this rather lovely adaptation of the LT logo for a Christmas timetable: (Dates from 1951.) ;D

Went to 55 Broadway today as part of the Open City weekend. Unfortunately there was no photography allowed inside, but we had a 45-minute tour of the building, into some of the meeting rooms, saw the postal system, etc. Thanks to Mike Ashworth for helping to make it happen. We could, however, take photos from the roof garden and from the very top of the building, by the flagpole; I've put the photos here: www.flickr.com/photos/londonstuff/sets/72157624981868528/Thanks for that, Londonstuff. I do like www.flickr.com/photos/londonstuff/5001009953/in/set-72157624981868528/#/ for the roundel design on the drainpipe to bottom right. Or are my eyes deceiving me? Ma and Pa AI decided not to go in the end, because of the pope visit, great shame and I told them off for it. BTW I'm not surprised it was empty, it tends to be on a weekend, most offices are!

What things? Oh, you mean your buses - wouldn't that be fab if they could fly! ;D Let's keep the choob trains on the rails though, there's little enough headroom as it is Aaaanyway, to get this thread back onto the rails is this system communications as well or just signalling? (Forgive me if this is a numpty question which has been covered elsewhere, but my interest in such things is only growing slowly - must be all of MRFS42's influence, heh!)

You boys (it must be men) who put this whole scheme together should be ashamed to draw your salaries every month. [Mod Hat=on] Diana, I am fully with you on your frustrations at what seems like a crazy system; but please don't point direct fingers at anyone without concrete proof and please, please, don't assume that a problem has been generated simply because of a person's gender! We've come so very far in terms of gender equality and TfL are one of the best employers in those terms - and that's from personal experience. [Mod Hat=off] Thanks!

Can I just ask, having read the report now (thanks, Phil), I'd like to know why the EB view of the signal would have been blocked by the WB? The curve doesn't seem that great, and seems to be in favour of an EB driver. Oh, and also, has the signal been re-sited now/repeater added, to make it easier to see? (Can I also confess? It took me a wee while to realise that Charing Cross is now called Embankment... ;D )

A pair of delightful Youtube vids - the first showing the new stock arriving in 1940 and the second showing the same stock nearly at the end of its life:
Southern Electric - New rolling stock for the Waterloo & City
Waterloo & City Line (1) - Class 487 (1940)

Rumbly, clanky, creaky, that moquette and the wooden floors! That's a better trip down memory lane than all the love-struck nonsense about A-stocks in the Met board! <runs away, very very quickly> Nice vid, thanks for sharing.

I agree it is alarming when you see them twist and bash around! But in the whole time I've been a tube fan I've never heard of one falling. (Doesn't mean to say it hasn't happened, though; but I trust wholeheartedly in the station and maintenance staff to spot and rectify something like that PDQ if it were to put passengers at any risk.)
PS welcome Lew1!

I'd be interested in why it's necessary to move the DLR and the Northern s/b. And you're right - what has happened to the Walbrook St entrance?

I know Shepherd's Bush (H&C) didn't have any as late as 1996. Wasn't Pimloco [/li][li] quite a late addition too? I know Colliers Wood didn't have them for aaages, but that's not exactly central London. ISTR also that Kentish Town and Chalk Farm were slow on the uptake (but don't quote me on that) even though Camden Town had them for donkey's years.
[/li][li] cool typo, I like that!

I've seen them before (not necessarily those very pics) and to me they are a thing of utter beauty. Not that I'm biased or anything. Do you know how many have been restored, and how many replaced with replicas?

Duh, bike, of cooooourse <slaps forehead roundly> Fank yoooo!
I once told a pleecyman off (nicely, of course) in St James' Park for riding a hoss, coz it was pooping on the pavements. I think it's mega yuk and really doesn't give a good impression for our tourists! ;D

Confused here! I came across this pdf today, part of TfL's resources for teachers. I get the idea, you read each statement in turn until the class guesses who you are. So - 1 is choob, 2 is bus, 4 is the DLR, 5 is the ferry, 6 is the CTL. Heh, I think. Am I wrong? Anyway. What is no. 3? I am stumped by the line "A properly fitted helmet should always be worn when using me." Que? I can't believe I can't get this one!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it drags on even longer than that. Jeepers. Has anyone got an idea now of whether or not it was actually arson? Little ****s. And those who graffiti'd the stationary trains. Ironic, isn't it, that this thread's icon is in flames.

Thank you! The eventual destination is www.llechfan-garden-railway.org/ - in the gardens of the volunteer hostel of the Talyllyn Railway. MRFS already has a loco for the line which I saw for the first time at Easter. 'Gwen' really is a gorgeous little thing seeing as she was scratch-built. I love the fact that the clerestory roof is designed to come off so you can get inside. We've had fun refurbishing her and I'm really looking forward to seeing her trudling around Llechfan. I'll put up more detailed pics when she's all finished!

Gwen is a little handmade carriage that MRFS42 found on eBay, a clerestory directors' saloon at 16mm/foot. We are revamping her. I have made some seats and curtains! (Being a gurl.) The curtains are mounted on card which will slot up under the windows on the inside. The chairs and bench have a frame of balsa (original owner's design). What do people think?

Huh - after loads of fruitless searches, the lovely MRFS42 has come up trumps in nobbut a minute... Here's Morden, in all its glory, which shows that it has a finial rather than a blob. Again - ideas as to how to recreate it? Thanks in advance!

Evenin' all! Funny question I have for you modellers... I have been doing the Kingsway model kit of Morden station, and it comes complete with cocktail sticks to mount the roundels on. Did the poles that the roundels were mounted on have blobs on the end? This one (Amos Glove) doesn't... ...and this one, from 21146, does... ...and I'm sure that Morden did. Unfortunately the version I'm doing is the one with the extended canopy but no offices, and I can't find a photo anywhere Any ideas yes or no? And if yes, what is the best way to make the blobs? (The example above has a flat end so I'd just trim the cocktail sticks at the end, if so.)
