I think the refurbs are good... Though their un refurbished counterparts have some character about them it's time to move on, they are not up to modern standards at all. The refurbs I find comfortable, smoother (probably because they are ex works though) and much more pleasant to be in generally. The one thing I don't like about them are the door chimes. Cheaply done integrating them in to the PA system, hence cutting out announcements. Should have been done so there were seperate door chime sounders at the doors instead, but being a short term refurb pre S-Stock I guess it wasn't worth it. totally agree with you on all points, but I didnt notice the door chimes...I think they look smart externally too...but has anyone noticed the dirty window frames though? thats a bit shoddy....!

They need to adjust the wheel rev counter in the DVA, though - I don't want to hear "The next station is etcetera" only ten seconds after getting on the train... Does anyone know if the decision to set the wheel rev value in the DVA firmware so low was a conscious one? The answer to this is dead simple - as you may have noticed, the audio announcements match the visual displays. It would be pointless for the train to travel all the way to the next station displaying 'this is (name of previous station)'. It therefore announces and displays the next station early on as it is relevant - and helps customers (including those who are blind/deaf) prepare for their impending stop, thus potentially reducing dwell time at the platform.

possibly a system similar to Desiros on the Mainline, a GPS sorta thing... Have you ever been to Victoria in an Electrostar? They have what might be described as a little door trouble.

I would disagree. There will still be D stocks around for 9-10years. The question is 'would D stock be replaced in 9-10 years'? Call me Mr. Cynical, but I'm in doubt. After all, no one anticipated that A stock will be still in service after 45 years.

My £0.02 worth. If LUL have not specifically included refurbishment in the contract. It could be that Metronet have worked out that the cash spent on refurbishing D stocks can be made back on payments for PPP ambience targets over the next 10 years.
The PPP is purposedly written so that its targets are a little vague. It'll say achieve reduced average journey time or increase passenger flow and not say replace X number of escalators etc. This leaves the infracos to decide how to achieve targets such as deciding to use longer trains over greater frequency of trains etc.

Then whats the point in tarting up life expired stock with useless prettifaction when the money could have been invested in a brand new build and given far more people jobs for a few years? If they started to build the 'S' stock now your precious 'D' stock muck-up would be rendered unecessary.

Considering the district is last in line for the S Stock upgrade as it's a major project to build a helluva lot of trains. Then what's the point you say? We've already been through that and I think we've said what we need to say as to why they were needed and it can all be found in previous pages... please read back and refer to anything you question if you wish but I see no point in reiterating what has been said in thread before. Could say HSTs don't need refurbished with HST2 on the horizon of arrival within the next decade... companies are still refurbing and re-engining them... I suppose the D Stock does not deserve the same treatment or something, considering they will be around roughly the same time as the HSTs will be before HST2 comes in...

Many of the features of the D stock refurb were long overdue. The door alarms are much needed for Health & Safety reasons, the external passenger information displays are very useful (especially for Warwick Rd entrance users of Earl's Ct!). I'm sure many members of the public also appreciate the internal information displays, auto announcements, and the much improved internal appearance. Not forgetting the drivers, who probably appreciate the moved off-side door buttons. It should also be remembered that like it or not, corporate image is very important these days, and the refurbed D stocks will help LUL achieve this.

The D stock were not life expired, however after 27 years (or thereabouts) in passenger service, a little something had to be done to carry them through so that they will carry on performing up until the new stock arrives. Some would argue, by giving the stock a refurb, they are provided jobs for people to actually do it ?

Personally I am of the opinion that the refurbishment of the D stock was absolutely necessary, not just to bring the interiors up to modern standards and relieve the fitters at ECDPT and UDPT of the issues that come with old rolling stock, but also to ensure that the D stock last long enough to remain in full frontline use as the S stock is debugged on the Met.
I am certain that the introduction of the S stock will come in the 60th year of the A stock, and that LU will absolutely need at least one functional, reliable fleet of SSL rolling stock available while the S is brought into use and the A withdrawn and/or preserved by CHTL.

I think they needed a refurb desperately. The un-refurbs look awful inside and, wether its just the ones I've been on, BUZZ a lot! The only downside to refurbs, IMO, is the useless dot-matrix screens, which if you are sitting down you need to strain your neck or eyes to see, depending on where you sit, and the announcements which don't actually seem to tell you anything of any use! But then again, it may seem like that to me because I know where interchanges are "Tourists in mind" I think are the words to use for the refurbs. Anway, how many are there now as I saw 3, rode 1, in the space of 20 minutes!?

The audible announcements are very useful for those who have poor eyesight, tourists, unregular tube users, and those who are half asleep. The dot matrix displays are very useful to the deaf, tourists, unregular tube users, and non-english speakers. Just because they are not useful to you, doesn't mean that they are not useful to others!

I quote myself: "But then again, it may seem like that to me because I know where interchanges are " "Tourists in mind" I think are the words to use for the refurbs." I completely agree with what you say, and I was just stateing how I feel about them.

A typo, on my part, in this list is that train9 should be 7 104+7061 apologies! And so I should think Especially as I had the misfortune to work it today - and what a piece of rubbish it is (at the moment anyway ) Motor not working on 8104, draughts from all round the M door and the CIS was defective on both ends. On 7061, the GPS wasn't working, but at least that isn't too bad. However, the CIS on 7104 was quite interesting, and it also allows me to answer some of TOKs questions about the CIS ;D It seems that, for some reason, on 7104 the CIS link to the wheel counter isn't working. As a result it relies purely on the GPS signals for the announcements. This means that there are NO announcements in the tunnel sections, unless the driver keeps on setting the position manually. HOWEVER - what was interesting is that, as soon as it came into an open section and picked up a GPS signal, it made the last inter-station announcement that should have been made . In other words, as I came out of the tunnel towards Whitechapel, the CIS suddenly announced 'The next station is Whitechapel....' This, despite the fact that under normal circumstances the system wouldn't be able to receive the GPS signal when that announcement should be made! It seems there is a little AI programmed into the system to allow for some of these problems! So to summarise, the GPS is usually the thing that determines where/when the announcements are made, and the wheel counter is a back-up for when the GPs is unavailable. But even without the wheel counter, the GPS can make allowances for missed announcements and make them if appropriate.

The Bombardier engineer was also saying that whilst from train 10 they will all be fitted with more CCTV cameras in the middle of the car and more digital destination indicators in the same place. As regards to this GPS thingy on train 9 is this the shape of things to come?

Sorry to drag the thread up, but is the Prototype D stock refurb still out? (That's the one with half in LUL livery, one carriage with different seats.)

Sorry to drag the thread up, but is the Prototype D stock refurb still out? (That's the one with half in LUL livery, one carriage with different seats.) Yes, it most certainly is! I had it only yesterday as Train 61. On a point of interest I was chatting with DStock7080 at work the other day and we were speculating as to the future of this unit, bearing in mind that though it obviously has similarities with the 'production' refurbs, there are many thinks that do differ. We have a feeling that 7008 will be left until well towards the end of the program and that it will always end up being at least a little unique. Time will tell!

How many refurbed Ds are there in service? Will I be likely to get on one tomorrow during the day?

How many refurbed Ds are there in service? Will I be likely to get on one tomorrow during the day? If you look back up the thread, there might be a slight clue For an approximation of the likelyhood of getting on one, divide the number of total D stocks by the number of refurbished D stocks.

Hi there, my first post. lol.
With the 'D-Stock' Refurbs has anyone noticed that the blue band of the livery stops several inches away from the door? There is a white surround to the red door, i think that this spoils the look of the trains compared with the other refurbished trains on the network. Jes' wondering if ne1 else had noticed. lol.

I like the way the old 'open door' buttons have just been crudely plated over. And that panel in the window where the cab doors slide into.
To be honest, yes, I do like the refurbs, but attention to detail is lacking. I also notice there's one or two subtle differences between prototype and production, notably, in the prototype, theres a green stripe on the seat dividers, on the production unit [the one I went on, 7108], its plain white.

Refurb train10 7098+7037 was arriving at Ealing Common about lunchtime today.
This should be the first one with the additional internal dot-matrix displays back-to-back over the centre transverse seats, making them easier to read than looking to the far ends. Trains1>9 will be retrofitted at Ealing from Jan onwards.
From train20>on will have an additional long handrail, inside the doors by the wheelchair space- there is only 1 at present- on one side.
