GPS is provided by satellites in orbit, so I am not sure how you can improve coverage. Signal boosters or additional balises. Similar issues on West Anglia at stansted due to it pretty much being in a hole. Was planned but never materialised due to cost. Biggest difference being on the Electostar family nothing would open at all and you would have to confirm the location from a list of stations as well as which coaches were to be released. Bit of a backward step in some regards on Aventras, but was a long process to get the doors open so perhaps they thought something open is better than nothing. Same thing occurred in Thameslink core with 377s. IIRC no balises were ever fitted despite it being the obvious solution and was already in plAce somewhere else (Victoria IIRC under the raft, it was needed when platform sharing since incoming arrival doesn't always reach the stop blocks end of the platform). On Thameslink we had perpetual 377s doors issues from their start to finish. 700s never had THIS issue though, their in core asdo rail safe defaulting issues were linked to inaccurate stopping positions when drivers were still fresh on them.

Probably the worst place for GPS signal on the route will be Liverpool Street Station. :-O

It looks as if they are being run as 8s. Is that permanent, as in 24/7? As opposed tp 360s and 321s on the GEML now, and 305s on the Chenfords in the past?

And on arrival at Liverpool Street: Nice pics. Looks great under that roof. And the doors at Liverpool Street did open?!

Strange that I start talking about default ASDO patterns and then that’s what it comes out of service for. Maybe I jinxed it!

I thought i recognised you at Hackney Downs! Why is it displaying Barking as it's destination?

I thought i recognised you at Hackney Downs! Why is it displaying Barking as it's destination? Inputting a TRN (train running number) that it doesn’t like (happens often with last minute empties headcodes) throws up all sorts of weird and wonderful destinations. This would have been from its inbound empty trip.

So how long now before these rule the roost and 315s / 317s are retired (or put to work elsewhere)?

Thanks, I note your use of the word 'was', hmm... things did not go well on Monday - lets see what happens! Its still planned. Not at liberty to give too much detail however the issues were induced by something being overlooked way before it entered service. I have no doubt if it ran again those issues wouldn’t happen...So its not all doom and gloom. You’ll see one again very very soon.

Could someone please enlighten me as to what .46 and .42 are. I would guess it is the destination display software version.

Could someone please enlighten me as to what .46 and .42 are. I would guess it is the destination display software version. Not just that. The trains whole software operating package. Each time something is changed a software package is uploaded. This can change many different things. So at present there have been 47 software versions since the units inception. A bit like IOS 10/11/12 etc on an apple phone. The 710/2 trains are a few versions behind because they havent needed the newer ones that include coupling etc and if it isnt broke....dont fix it. WA units are a few ahead because of the need for coupling etc. It sounds a lot of versions but its not uncommon amongst TCMS based rolling stock. It just makes it easier to keep track of things, and if a new version introduces problems you can roll back to a stable version.

So it’s back out next week Tues-Fri covering the same unit diagrams.
Interestingly the set of 317s it replaces are shown as off lease upon arrival at Ilford. So this looks permanent.

Thanks Its a shame its a 317 thats going - not a 315. Not for the peak time regulars who have the unenviable task of finding a space to stand stable on those horribly unsuitable trains. These trains with their quirks from a past life somehow managed to feel stuffy with off-peak loadings and given that the Lea Valley is no backwater, many would argue the situation became unacceptable some time ago.

I rather agree with sps. IMO the 315s were always spartan and substandard, unlike the stock they replaced 40 years ago. I'm not happy to hear the 710s will be run as 4s much of the time. Like TFL Rail, IMO they should be run as 8s all the time. The peak shoulders lead to cramming on a 4. The same happens with 321s and 360s on GA.

The 306s look fairly cramped to me though.
