And yesterday marked sixty years since the Chingford-Hertford-Enfield-Stortford electrification; the 315/317s accounting for greatly more than half! Target withdrawal date for the 710s, anybody?

No expert on that part of the world but I think the 317s only came onto the Chingfords in the London Overground era?

No expert on that part of the world but I think the 317s only came onto the Chingfords in the London Overground era? No, it was earlier than that. They were visitors just after their refurb, and painting in shocking purple; so about ?2000; and during the 2003 Central Line blockade, when the Chingford line was under constant siege (and LU chartered all sorts of wonderful road vehicles - including late 40s RTs - for onward transport to Loughton/Epping). I used to find the 317s highly civilised, with a good turn of speed across the Marshes and south of Hackney Downs

Anyway, we mustn't talk about buses on here!

The 2x five car trains will, I assume, be used on the Liverpool Street routes - if platforms are long enough!
I cannot think of any other regular LO services where such could be even remotely viable (OK south of New Cross Gate - but that would be pointless!)
Otherwise the authorisation of 10 car trains is a mere formality without any practical benefit.
I note that 9 car trains (1x five car, 1x four car) were not mentioned, so suppose that such has not been authorised.

Looks like that give that a ten car 710 would measure around 205m which is well in excess of the majority of the platforms on LO routes out of Liverpool St (around 185m at most locations). The units intended use on NLL/WLL services would suggest that this is just an operational aid rather than passenger orientated.

Don't they have the ability to lock out certain carriages?

The five car units are intended for the North London Line, to supplement the 378s found there. I am speculating but perhaps they have been authorised in multiple configurations for rescue purpose rather than in passenger service?
