Considering they are de commissioned before they go I would assume they are in serviceable condition

Not sure what the Vivarail contract specifies. What is meant by operational condition? Motors all work etc? Why would Vivarail care about the motors given they are converting the units to diesel? I can see why they would require the bogies/car shell etc. to be in good condition.

The plan was originally for them to reuse the motors and everything else in the bogies (as is the case with 230 001), but it would seem that the plan for future units is to fit new motors to enable regenerative braking for an onboard battery pack.

The diesel engines generate electricity which powers the motors.

Why would Vivarail care about the motors given they are converting the units to diesel? I thought that was the point of the project - ready made electric transmission system with motors that still have some life in them. The only new bit is the diesel generator sets to make the electricity to replace the 3rd/4th rail supply. The clue is the classification number 230: 2xx always means a diesel-electric unit (such as the class 205 "Thumpers", class 222 Meridians and the class 254 HSTs.

This thread has gone very quiet for 11 days. Anyone care to update us on the current usage of D Stock? Is it still 2-3 duties per day on average? Are they tending to be used on the interpeaks, or are recent indications of that just coincidence? I'm thinking of going out later this week, so any news would be gratefully received!
