Chatter around the web suggests that two more D's are going next week. 7016 and 7532. Now's the time for your tales, memories and experiences with those two....

There doesn't seem to be much nostalgia for the D stock amongst the drivers. Whenever there is a driver change, the relieving driver normally seems to moan about having to drive the D! Obviously the S stock has pampered them! Strange to think that when the D's came in, they were a big advance in driver comfort when compared to the CO/CP and R stock. How times and expectations change.

Only amongst some drivers!
I was lucky to be reformed 25x55 last week, as the relieving driver of 55 was untrained on D Stock.
Indeed when introduced the D Stock were dubbed "biscuit tins" by us nostalgists, due to their flimsy and bland appearance and that a biscuit tin probably contained more metal!
Certainly Ds had better heaters, had speedometers that actually worked, compared to Rs and actually had speedos compared to CO/CPs! 6-7 people could fit into a D cab, about 3-4 on the older trains.

I suppose it's got to the point now where any trip on a D could potentially be that driver's last, as there are so few left now. Even finding one for a ride requires military timetabling precision! When did D stock training for new drivers actually finish?

All these summary reports remind me of the time when enthusiasts were reporting the demise of the MS61 on the RER in near real-time last year. There was a Facebook group that would often post the position of the last train(s), usually in the form of "NELY 61 towards Boissy-Saint-Léger departed Châtelet at 0935" and we would all then chase the train.
Not sure if there is as much passion for the D Stock as much as the MS61 on the RER, the A Stock on the Tube and the still-in-service R32 on the New York Subway, though.

His reasoning is that they are ok trains, but that they have gone into a decline in their final days in terms of non-essential maintenance. Perhaps others could elaborate on this.

I was doing an inspection from the cab of a D stock approx 3 months ago now and the driver who I know to be an Upminister driving stated what a proper train it was not the plastic rubbish of a S stock.

I was on one yesterday, and both drivers (there was a change at Barking) were having trouble stopping it in the right place. Often it would pull up short, needing a little motoring to get it to the stopping mark. It was also very jerky when pulling away. Really added to the old train feel!

Train 122 is a D-stock. 7032 is on the west end, rather glad I missed the train ahead by a few seconds now!
Edit: unit 7057 is on the east end

Indeed, it was shame I didn't have time for a proper ride. Plaistow to Bow Road isn't long enough for what may be a last journey.

Hopefully you will get a few more chances. There will be a last official run at some point, but nothing is confirmed at the moment.

To me, they were the start of the modernization that stripped away the soul of the Underground, although admittedly, that soul was usually late and/or filthy!

I'll probably be unavailable although I'm not unaware of the feelings running high about the removal of these units. I shall therefore raise a dead trout to their memory (as I'll probably be fishing somewhere on the day) and wish gods speed to whichever end or rebirth awaits them.

Rather looks as though the end is very nigh. 7533, one of the first into service all those years ago, apparently not being kept for last public working/farewell tour, then....

Hello everybody,
I’ve been lurking on this thread for a few weeks in readiness to nip down to London and get my last go on the latitudinal seating.
Any best guesses as to when the final day of normal service is likely to be (or how many weeks off we are)?
