Probably this (link)Testing of seating and cab layout for Vivarail's D-train (Class 230) Does anyone know which vehicles are in the prototype unit, which were used for the crash test, etc? 7056 was the crash tested car. From the withdrawals list, it looks like 230001 is formed of 7058, 17128, and 7511.

I was out and about on the District on Wednesday 2nd November from about 1030 at Wimbledon, moving on to Earls Court for about an hour to 1200 and a trip to Barking getting there about 1245. I probably traveled at the wrong time, however it is the first time I have been on the District and not seen any D Stock working. I am not sure how many trains I saw but I think at least 50% of the daytime allocation. I know that there are only 10 trains left and wonder if they are being used sparingly to allow them to last a bit longer so they can replace S Stock if there are any problems? The last trip out past Ealing Common in the evening peak a week last Tuesday I noted that there were three sets on the Depot all presumably spare.

The last trip out past Ealing Common in the evening peak a week last Tuesday I noted that there were three sets on the Depot all presumably spare. There are 10 theoretically available to run in service. A couple of weeks ago, there were, on the days I observed, 5 or 6 in service. Whether this is the norm, I can't say. But I imagine that they don't want to use too many of them at a time as this will shorten the time until they need maintenance, which in all honesty won't be worth the time and money. Also, we want at least 2 or 3 trains with enough miles left to be available to operate the farewell runs. There are now enough S stock to pretty much run the whole District service. In terms of looking for D stock running, on the day you mentioned, it could be that they were mainly running on the midday stablers. On the day when there were 6 running, 5 were seen on consecutive workings. So it is luck of the draw. I'm not yet aware of any days where there have been no D's in service during the off peak.

why are Vivarail mixing up the D stock cars rather than leaving cars in the units as they were already in?

why are Vivarail mixing up the D stock cars rather than leaving cars in the units as they were already in? Why not? There seems to be no particular reason to keep them in the same units. Presumably they are taking the cars which are in the best condition. Also, the 230s will run as 3-car sets and therefore need two DMs. Most units, as running on LU, only had one.

It worries me that they are over-taxing the D's. No need to run 8 surely, and have 7 on all day runners? Is there really that many S7's that aren't available, particularly when a month ago they only needed 5 D's in service? Why not just use them lightly, and run them on the peak workings? My concern is that they will all be knackered by the time we need them for the farewell tours.

They only need one train for the farewell tour. They might as well get the most use they can from the rest.

Well you'd want at least 3 trains in working order with enough mileage just in case there is a problem with one or two of them. The TfL projects report to GLA last week stated that 7 Ds would be retained until the Spring of next year and all S stock would be in available by the end of this year. This doesn't allow for the trains returning to Bombardier for modifications.

D stock usage should be kept to an absolute minimum. Runs that are D stock should be limited to those with the lightest passenger loadings.

I noticed that a few of the enamel car numbers that went 'missing' have been replaced with adhesive versions.

There are 125 S7's in London available for service, not counting the trains not yet delivered, those in use as S7+1 on the Met and those away for ATC mods.
Peak requirement for the District and H&C is 109 trains. That leaves 16 S7's surplus. With 8 D stocks in service, that means that 24 S7's were not running. Even allowing for some trains to be having routine maintenance, that is a lot.
TFL rarely miss an opportunity to "show off." I'm surprised they aren't going for banishing the D's by the end of the year. Particularly when 2016 was the target year for it.
Unless the reliability of the S7's is a lot worse than what they are prepared to admit?

I have to admit when I first saw it in TMU, the door handles threw me until I was told it was 'the school train'.

Why don't they keep Six Double ended units in service, to form the three D Trains??, this gives the greatest redundancy as each service train will have four useable cabs in it - just shuffle the formations around as required.

Because two double-edged units reduces overall capacity and, IIRC, also lengthens the train excessively.

also lengthens the train excessively. I seem to remember there being a rule about it being forbidden to operate two double ended units for exactly that reason

a rule about it being forbidden to operate two double ended units It must be a rule that was introduced at some time after the first train enetered service then, as the withdrawals lsit identifies that train as having been formed of units 7528 and 7532

When first introduced all D Stock trains were formed of two double-ended units as these were delivered first. It was quite common to operate them with Guards. However, with the advent of OPO - precise stopping positions and the erecting of platform end barriers, this led to the restrictions mentioned above. Still nothing formal has been issued, it's just not done.
Difference between DM-T-UNDM+UNDM-T-DM and DM-T-DM+DM-T-DM is around 520mm

Thanks for that much appreciated. Made my way to South Kensington and around 19h40 T34 7526+7037 arrived en route Upminster. Had it to Whitechapel. Quite bad flats on 7526.
Pic at Whitechapel is now my profile picture. Seemed quite weird to see everything else running as S stock.
