Got the day off work and intend to spend the entire day photographing the last A stock on each leg of the diagram. Can't really believe it's the end though... Agreed - it hasn't sunk in yet. Look forward to the pics if and when you upload them! They are definitely going to be uploaded, and they'll be in their own gallery. If you fancy a browse, here are my shots taken before they vanished, I've been snapping them over the years but never reached the objective of getting them all on 'film'; mainlinesouth.smugmug.com/Trains/London-Underground/17834982_GCFkbt#!i=1475699982&k=MHCsWcx My favourite photo I have ever taken was of an A stock; mainlinesouth.smugmug.com/Trains/London-Underground/17834982_GCFkbt#!i=1363653687&k=rVmtDpK&lb=1&s=L Edited - can't get the link to work, shot taken in the tunnel at Wapping! Edited by Harsig so the links do work

Is tomorrow going to be a massive squeeze like on the last day of '67 stock? That was quite a sardine tin experience. ;D

Well the final trip has only been sold at four a side rather than five a side plus standing so shouldn't be too bad. But when the only capacity restriction is station dwell time; who knows!

Managed a trip before work, 11:40 Baker Street to Aldgate and back.
Nice of the driver to make a few special annoucements regarding the last day of service.

I did a return journey from Kings Cross to Amersham (12.20 on) and was staggered at the number of people who were doing the same. A good 150 or so got off the train at Amersham and back on again 20 minutes later. At this rate I expect the last train before depot tonight will be packed.

Heading to Liverpool Street in the hope that I'll meet the A stock there or at Aldgate. How's it doing for time?

So far, so good.
It is a shame about the loud youths in the first car, including a member of the London Underground Apprenticeship (in uniform) who like to shout at the top of their voice at people on platforms, jump on each other and throw things around.
A really good day, well attended. Does anyone know why the trip to Amersham this morning went fast?

Yes, I'm afraid that got me to hover through the cars as the journeys progressed, until I tired out in the afternoon:

When I commuted to Amersham from Harrow it was always a guessing game as to whether the train would arrive on platform 1 or 3 (or somtimes 4) then even go up the slow line instead of the fast. So I guess it had to do it one last time. Announcement came just before train was arriving that it would go from platform 1. Just got through subway in time to take a not very good photo of it arriving.

Unfortunately due to a poorly son, and a not very understanding wife ("you're going where? It's a just a train!") I could only do a quick HOTH to Amersham and back to Chorleywood trip this afternoon, but later in the same journey the events were captured for the last package on London Tonight at 6. A reasonable piece, though not for those of a nervous disposition as they showed As and 67s being scrapped at Booths!

They were indeed a rather raucous bunch, but IMO it was all in good fun. I actually found it encouraging to see such a turnout of young 'uns enthusiastically celebrating the departure of an old Tube stock. Didn't think so many of them cared about trains these days. In the end, the 17:18 Harrow-on-the-Hill to Aldgate run was a good enough trip for me. After two failed attempts at catching one during the past week or so, it was third time lucky!

It's over now. The A stock has finally ended its passenger service with LT. Sad day. Well arranged however. Thank you to all the staff and drivers - you know who you are....

I saw the ITV news report, now I'm counting on YouTube to provide me with coverage. It does feel like a part of me has gone, anyway what was it like for people on the ground as the final A Stock went around the bend and into history?

Rage! 5063 had been tagged this afternoon at some point. It's a sad day. Hasn't hit home. Got a lump in my throat as we left Northwood (my childhood home) for the last time. Saturday will be hard....

It saddens me to read these posts as I am aware of the significance of this event to you guys who have lived the A stock for so many years. And, indeed, I suspect an operational life time of fifty years may never be beaten. These were grand old beasts but, sadly, nothing lasts for ever.
Regrettably, I could not get there; however, I recall with affection the banter I have shared with Mr Metman and others over the last year or so, but there may a glimmer of hope.
In the future, each time we complain that the S-stock seats are too small (which they are), or there are too few of them (which there are), or the grab poles are intrusively close to the seats (which they are), or the A/C is too cold in winter (which it is), or the repeated automated announcements and door warning sounds are too wearing on the ears (which they are) then Mr M and his pals will say “I told you so”. And we won’t have a leg to stand on. More that that, what about the sparks and flashes when they increase the power supply to 750v? Or in five years time when the flexible corridors between the carriages fall apart?
Don’t get too down, guys, there is plenty of fun ahead.

Like others, I managed a last trip on the A Stock today. I arrived at Harrow on the Hill platform 1 on a Chesham fast, so even got to grice a new platform for me. I then travelled in the front carriage of the A-Stock to Aldgate and took my leave of it there. It was good to see it head off with plenty of people on board.
It means that all the passenger underground stock is now younger than I am: an odd feeling.

Unfortunately my schedule today didn't allow me to get a trip but I passed it at Great Portland Street earlier, and made sure I was on the platform at Northwick Park as it went down the fast to Wembley. I did spot a few people taking photographs, anyone from here? The plaque on the front was a nice touch. It was also a pleasant suprise seeing it enter the depot as I passed Wembley soon after.

I'd just like to add my thanks to all who were involved in organising and running today's last A stock public working. A sad day - but an enjoyable one. Thanks go to all who were involved.

There was a distinct divide understandly not visible from a distance. The group was spread across the area of two sets of seats back to back in 5034 towards the rear of the car. The pair of bays closer to the single leaf door was seating the 'crazy' bunch, like you said throwing things and shouting etc. The pair of bays further away from the single leaf door was seating: Me, the apprentice and a couple others, we were being quiet and just talking normally. I agree the sitting on people was abit silly in uniform etc but for the rest of that journey he came and sat with me and a couple others and sat there without doing any of what was mentioned.

I was on a few of the journeys today and stayed with the train until the final run into Harrow. Was surprised how many enthusiasts were on the train throughout the day and how many people were photoing/videoing at random spots on the way. A good day all in all with a good atmosphere in every carriage!, was a bit suprised when there wasn't a big ceremony from Howard Collins or something like last year with the 1967ts. Got some photos on my Flickr page from today too... www.flickr.com/photos/steve09photos/8027771905/in/photostream/

For example, not all the doors were actually "filmed" and Collins didn't stay in the same car.

Well I've retreated to The Merchant at Liverpool Street Station... The A Stock deserves something stronger than Coca-Cola to toast it, but I start night shift in 30 minutes.
If anyone managed to video the young guy who successfully climbed on to the luggage rack in 5034 (later named and shamed by the driver - 'Matt, can you please get away from the doors'), will they be uploading it to YouTube?
I've never seen 'yobbishness' in transport enthusiasts before, but it was good natured - cheering every blast of the siren, shouting 'Three cheers for the A stock' and, every time an S stock went past, bellowing 'scrap it!' Their hearts were in the right place.
When I felt upset was when going back to Liverpool Street from Harrow. That's when it hit home. I lived the A stock too - my parents took me out when I was a kid on them, I commuted on them, I went to nights out on them, came back drunk on them, came home after seeing my first girlfriend on them - and, of course, photographed them. The A stock was a massive part of my life.
I had to come today, and I'm so glad I made the effort, as did so many others. Lots of photos and videos - better than I got I suspect! - have already been uploaded, and I'm sure I'll follow suit.
I too would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to those who made today happen.
First ride on A stock: some time in 1974 Last ride on A stock: 26th September 2012

A lot more was different back then on launch: Germany was divided, the Soviet Union intensified its nuclear programme, Hong Kong was British, Taiwan was a UN member, and the Apartheid in South Africa intensified in face of growing international isolation.
