There was a 20mph restriction at Kew Gardens eastbound for refurbs for a while because of a clearance issue with the platform edge, but it has now been withdrawn. There was a perceived issue, but it was all cleared up when Network Rail found out the D stocks were not new trains but the same ones in different colours Do C stocks have any spare room on the platforms or is it tight for them too? There's a bit of room at Paddington and a few inches maybe at Notting Hill Gate - but the tightest of them all is Bayswater.........the last door on the rear car lines up very neatly with the platform end.

Are D stocks then the longest cars to have operated on LU?

Yes I think so. Currently the D stock are the longest. In the past, the longest cars were the MV 1927 built Driving cars which were a little over 55ft long (they had buffers and screw couplings initially). The Dreadnought coaches were about 54ft long. Interestingly the Met also had the shortest coaches. The Ashbury (bogie stock) which ran electrically from 1906-41 and by steam 1898-1921 1940-1960 was only 39ft long!

Managed to grab un-refurbed D78 DM7530 down to Wimbo today. The whine noise from the MA on one of the cars, as we left Wimbo to head east, sounded really noisy, like a child crying!
Still, I'm happy now I managed to get a few photos. Including one of the Gamwell Straphanger.

The Rothschild Saloon was about 58' long, and the Pullmans were 59½' long.

The circle line stations on the western side are a problem in terms of platform length. If it were necessary to have divisionary lines that could accomodate 7car (or 8 car) trains, it might prove easier in terms of planning consent and design feasibility to rebuild the chord between Latimer Road and Shepherds Bush mainline station. But the signalling on that stretch would be a problem, then you'd have to electrify it. However, lengthening stations platforms in the open would surely be easier?

Perhaps they could operate the last journey in Passenger Open mode? Doubt if they will though.

Maybe one station - station trip at each end, and not in peak hour running. Sounds like a very good idea... I wonder if the buttons will actually still work when op'd by pax?

I doubt the doors will be put into passenger operation even for one stop, the switch is under the seats in the motor cars and hasn't been touched for many years.

Hmm, I question the viability of advertising this to the world... Would operation of such, show up on the TMS or equiv. in the cab?

Yeah, I heard before that the D stock passenger open switch is not easily accessible. In more modern cabs, it's located in the cab. I assume that although against the rules, 92 stock could be run in oassenger open mode quite easily - unless they've disabled the switch!

Thats true... not sure - never tried to use it... never intend to, unless instructed to do so.

Even so, passengers still try to press them! They do indeed... and you try and tell them the doors won't open until the driver releases them... and they look at you like you are a can short of a six-pack.

But...but...the button says 'push to open'...it must be pushed...
Surely though with the advent of new more comprehensive DVA's, an announcement could be made saying something like 'At the next station, the doors will not open automatically. Please use the door open buttons by the side of the door.' for current stocks with them? As has been pointed out, people always push them anyway.

Yeah, but we are dealing with a public that is rather 'immune' to announcements anyway. Yet, should they reintroduce Pax-Op doors, and they DON'T press the button [expecting them to open as per normal] Who is the first one to be lamblasted for allegedly not opening the doors? [when they would have done, had the pax op'd the button]

I like the idea of using a DVA announcement asking passengers to use the buttons at the next station. However, passenger open increases dwell time, and so it should only be used on sections of line where the service is less than, say, 20tph. It would certainly help to keep people warm in winter.

It is a key operated switch, and whether anyone still has a key is another matter (It is Yale key, but not the drivers RKL220, which is needed )

Hasn't this been tried before and passengers ended up getting confused and expected doors to open at overground stations? Also, I disagree with trying to make us warm in winter, personally i'd rather trains were just left without any climate control at all, my climate control is the coat that I decided to put on when I came out the house!

Just in case anyone's still counting - add me to the number of people for the farewell tour, please!
(Will probably pick it up at East Ham and stay on till the end. Thank goodness for night work.)
