Wasn't it Alan Wetherell of the LT Commercial Office that used to arrange the annual Rail Tours? It might have been! Rings bells. Well done there my friend! He was an enthusiast I thought....and enthusiastic. Being on friendly terms at the time with the said LT Commercial Office chap, and presumably as he used to read Underground News as well as UndergrounD, thus he knew of me, I gleaned some information from him about how the tours were organised. I was involved on a peripheral basis with the D200 Hadrian Pullman tour from Kings X to Carlisle via the Settle route after we in the ARPS played a part in its rescue/restoration but have never organised a tour directly. On reflection, [having consumed pizzas and profiteroles at Pizza Hut in Southampton with two of my kids] I would have thought that Cravens Trains might well be sounded-out, having had experience at this sort of thing? Can we start a new thread please and therein moot as to what stock would be practical and whether anyone would want to go on it/them? I have to say that again on reflection, the first should be a District tour. Oracle David

I remember how Alan Wetherell used to check tickets of passengers on the rail tours by walking through communicating doors as the train moved (and why not, that's how TTI's, later RCI's then RPI's etc operated). He always used to wear a mid-blue suit at the same time that Area Managers were issued a similar uniform in Control Grade blue plus an 'official' armband IIRC.

I recently (last few years) remember a RCI passing through the inter connecting doors of a WC Picc on the fast between H.Smith and Acton checking tickets

Thank you to everyone who made it such a success Hear, hear. I managed to get a few photos as it arrived (impressively punctually!) at Chiswick Park on the first run to Ealing Broadway, so I thought I'd offer them in my first post to this forum. All six photos are at rjnews.fotopic.net/c642747.html (first six photos in that collection). The quality is not great, as there wasn't much light for taking photos of moving trains - well, that's my excuse!

Of course, the event marked the end of something that had been going far longer than silver trains; the last passenger train to have grooved wooden floors.

Hello. I'd like to further say thanks to everyone! I'm Jack, the tall guy in the brown coat who was on the train from about 6:20pm. Here are my pictures from the day.

At least I won't have to look at that horrible 1970s cream, orange and brown decor any more ;D

Surely D Stock are banned from running off the District Line in most cases due to their stiff suspension being considered a derailment risk? So any repeat of the Metroliner tour would have to omit the "Metro" bit!

So any repeat of the Metroliner tour would have to omit the "Metro" bit! Don't forget that there was the bogie replacement programme about six or so years ago that addressed that problem. I have no doubt that no such tour would be simple to arrange, organise and achieve but I for one thing it is a laudable thing to aim for?

First of all thanks for marking the end of the un-refurbs so well. I never managed to ride on the last one but did get my planned photos of it entering service ex-UP Dt and again at West Ham WB. Some of these pix should appear in Underground News in due course. I too miss the old annual LT rail tours although I would be more likely to chase them with a camera than ride on nowadays. It seems that Company Plan (which did away with a lot of 'spare' train staff) and then PPP (which sort of banned any 'extra-curicular' activity which wasn't in the contract) put the knife in for the old LT inter-line tours, and frankly single line-based events aren't nearly so interesting. It *would* be good to get something restarted though and before future ATO/ATP/and incompatable re-signalling completely rules such enterprises.

Bit late adding to the thread but I'd like to add my thanks as well guys. For the first time I got to see abit of Underground history. It was nice to put alot of faces to names on here and meet a few people again from xmas and even meet the main man ;D Hopefully I will get my pictures up soon as Ive been away since riding on the train! (was only 90mins late!). I look forward to meet everyone at the next major event (I wonder what that will be?) and having a good laugh as well as a nice ride. Mack ;D

As Dmitri rightly directs, the Depot Open Weekend on 8/9 March is the next planned meet - the plan is for the Saturday. We'll no doubt bump into each other round the Depot and then head off to the pub late afternoon and probably remain there for a good part of the evening. See the thread linked to aboe for more details.

Ok, I've finally got back home and had some sleep - had a hectic week last week and it caught up with me after the tour! Thanks very much to Dave for organizing this. I enjoyed being a part of a piece of history! And also thanks to Colin, aspect and everyone else who was there and made it a good time. Pictures and videos will follow once I get them resized and uploaded! Looking forward to any future tours, especially if they're cross-line!

LU move customers from A to B, they used to do it via 'C'.

Just to let you all know, I saw one of the last two units of 'D' Stock in stage 1 at Derby today (7115). Bombardier are stripping it out and generally taking it apart with lots of dust and dirt flying around! You will be pleased to know that the 'Last Silver Train' notices are still in the casement windows where you left them. I have asked for the few remaining ones to be carefully removed and returned to London.

So all the "wooden floors" are out of the system? And no more trains will have those hanging balls? (is there a proper name for those?) An era has ended. ~Ra'akone

excellent photos!!!!!!! hopefully ill be into this big time soon...... only thing ive had similarish to this is when i was the first driver on a shuttle service(route 574) there was a lot of photographers around the route photoing me and the special bus service!! i actually managed to google the route and found a photo of me driving said route on its first day!! so there is massive interest in 'unusual ' events. will seem odd being on a district line train without that grooved wood flooring. seems only the other day those trains were THE replacements to the previous model!!! ;D i said previously. i remember the red ones on the district line to upminster

probaords cannot handle @ charachters yet, so, link the same full url through tinyurl.com enter your picture url into tinyurl.com, then cut and paste the link to the pic here, try 'ing the url link too... might work, failing that, link it via shrinkpictures.com, paste the 'properties' here! I know it sounds complicated... very easy once you get the hang of it! EDIT: adw beat me to it!
