Although I can't go into the exact details of what we know at the moment, I thought that you may be interested to know that the date fast approaches for the running of the last unrefurbed D Stock. There is a date penciled in for the event, but I have decided that - at least for the time being - we won't announce it 'officially'; I am assured though that I will be told and the Powers That Be have told me that it 'should be published on your web site' (meaning here!) - so more confirmation that this forum is seen as a means of communication to those enthusiastic about London Underground! Also, I'm not going into details about at what times and where it will visit, as - again - this is not finally agreed. However, as planned at present, it will be on a weekday late afternoon and early evening during mid February, almost certainly commencing from Upminster and finishing in Ealing Common Depot. What I can however tell you for sure is the following; there are three Instructor Operators allocated to drive it on this final outing, two of whom are members here - myself and Aspect. So I think you can quickly work out that we'll try to influence the running of the train as much as we can. though as it will almost certainly run in timetabled paths this may not be as successful as we would like. So (and this is the cunning bit ) what I would like (and I'm sure I speak for Aspect too) is to have an idea of how many enthusiasts are likely to be interested so that we can maybe use this as a lever on our bosses to try to make the best of the event that we can. We await your responses........

I might have a go! I was on the D Stock Tour when the stock was almost new, and visiting parts of the system that may not have been visited since by them! I was there with several enthusiasts (some of whom may be members) on the last CO/CP stock and R Stock service trains (and the final tours), and the word was spread around by 'phone having been mooted in UndergrounD News. As I mentioned before the final red train was allowed to run in pax service to Ealing Common from Broadway. Thanks Boss Dave!

As I mentioned before the final red train was allowed to run in pax service to Ealing Common from Broadway. I think that we might possibly be able to be persuaded to do something similar - we'll need to get an OK 'formally' I expect - but personally I think that's a goer.

Oh, and Sir Topham Hatthe Controller agreed over the 'phone from what I can recall, at the last moment to the short last run.
Dave, don't forget those detonators! At the Common there were more than I have ever seen in my life in one place, and I have done p/way work on a preserved line. We honestly wondered if the poor DM was going to be blown off the rails!
As you know, by the way, the tour CO/CP train reversed up the hill from Acton Town EB local to the Depot which was something I have never seen before or since. Unless the R Stock did the same but I can't recall.

I hate to steal your thunder Dave but there are details posted already on Google group uk.transport.london. I won't repeat them here though.

I actually saw one today coming out at Whitechapel, going towards Upminster, just when I was on the H&C to Kings Cross!

Can you supply a link for the google group please - I've seen several versions but so far they're all wrong (including some allegedly LU staff only places)!
IMHO that's not unusual - I repeat - we are getting the definitive information.
EDIT: JTD has emailed me the link. The information quoted is wrong. I've told them so.

I saw one at High Street Ken (Olympia service) the other day. And another on the District mainline.

A driver who has a un-refurb to run the Olympia service is considered VERY lucky When doing Olympia's is the only time I want a non-refurb train lol

Just to supplement Dave's announcement .. It is worth noting that this is not ONLY the final run of an un-refurbished D stock. It is ALSO the final run of an unpainted alluminium train in normal passenger service ! I'm sure many of you will wish to ride or photograph this significant event in London Underground history. As Dave say's it may be useful if you could indicate your interest in this thread, ta It is anticipated, subject to any late switches in the refurbishment program, that the train will be formed as follows : west 7530 - 17530 - 7531 - 8115 - 17115 - 7115 east

Not if having read these posts they are removed, prior to entering service. Or even having the train removed from service.... That'll cost even more money....

Time was, on the Picc I used to hold said 'andles and from Picc Circus to say Hammersmith, or even Acton Town, manage to have a micro-sleep and stay upright! However I always preferred the classic 1938 Stock ones.
I would hope to goodness that the last train runs in half-term.

I can't find it now, but on Youtube there was definitely a video recording of 2 people, 1 standing by one of the dangly handles, the other pulling the handle back as far back as possible and then letting go so that the solid handle bit hit the first person (quite hard) right in the middle of the forehead. (Cue laughing by half of the train!) In a few years, people will be getting nostalgic about them!
