I'd like to know when the 313s will be leaving the DC line, so I can go on one for the last time.....(on LO anyway!)

Class 313 - the poor man's Oerlikon! I will not miss them I like the look of the Class 378 but their seating arrangements leave a lot to be desired.

Class 313 - the poor man's Oerlikon! I will not miss them I like the look of the Class 378 but their seating arrangements leave a lot to be desired. Xerces Fobe I absolutely agree, although they are still relatively reliable they are all well passed their best, they're very sluggish on DC compared to AC. The best 313's are those still to be found on the Moorgate route with their comfortable high backed seating. 313's have served the DC line (and the NLL and WLL) well over the years and I hope they serve their new owners well, but I will personally not miss them. Externally at least, I think the design of the 378 is one of the best new builds we've had in a while. IMO I don't think the seats on the new 378's are really that much harder than those on the 313's (and the seat backs don't fall off and get thrown out of windows), though I must confess I'm not very keen on longitudinal seating. After all is said and done 'New' traction is long overdue on the DC and the sooner it happens the better. Martin

378s far superior in design to the (ugly) fronts of the S Stock. But shame about the uncomfortable seats on the 378s. Personal views, of course!

I found the 313s on the NLL pretty grim and they were murder when hauling a lot of people. Difficult to get on and off fighting your way past seats and other commuters. 378s on the other hand are spacious, and designed for the job. I couldn't care less about the seats being harder as I very rarely got to sit down on a 313 anyway so it's no loss.
As far as looks are concerned the 378s (and the S stock) are pretty good in my opinion and again a great improvement on the 313s which always looked a bit to skinny from the front!

Also, there doesn't seem to have been a delivery for several weeks. The delivery situation with the 378 appear to be; 378202 378225 378226 378227 378228 378229 378230 All of these have all been delivered to Chart Leacon the last one being 230 on 13th May - not sure if all those units are still at Ashford or if any have gone to New Cross? Well 378225 has been used in service on the ELL now so that one has definitely made it to New Cross Another delivery from Derby is pencilled in for tonight (Thursday)

378231 on its way from Derby this evening. On a different tack, it will be interesting to see how LOROL utilise the 378/2s in the short term. 378225, having escaped from Ashford, seems to be in regular service on the ELL - one might imagine this is to give a little more breathing space to the guys at New Cross Gate as 378140 seems to be a permanent fixture inside the maintenance shed, putting pressure on availability of what is still a new fleet where 18 units (including the nominal spare at Dalston Jn) from 20 are required in service each day. Reports elsewhere suggest the conversion of the DC Lines to 378 operation is a few months away and as the NLL platform extension works are ongoing the 378/2s will be without regular work unless they are rotated through the ELL pool. I also noticed earlier this week that 378014 was at New Cross Gate depot - having been seen there the previous week as well. Unfortunately I was unable to ascertain the reason for its presence, or what the problem may be with 378140.

Got a question on the DVA. Why is it that upon departing Canada Water, the DVA will say "Please keep your luggage with you at all times and report anything suspicious to a member of staff", but not at other stations?

Surely not a shortage of 378s given that the DC Lines have still to be switched? I don't know if the 313 trip happened, but there was a pair of 378s out on the DC lines this morning. I was most surprised to see 378 023 and 378 017 coupled together heading south (not in service I might add) at Harrow & Wealdstone at about 10.25. I'm used to seeing the odd single unit running about, but not a pair.

Hi,
Does anyone know where 378001 and 378002 are hiding? The remainder of the the 378/0 fleet have been regularly seen in service but I have never seen 001/2, surely they're around somewhere!

Thanks for all the replies.
So will 378202 will be unique as the only 378/2 never to have actually been a 378/0?
I know that 001 was the first one ever to arrive and begin trials/testing last year.

I know that 001 was the first one ever to arrive and begin trials/testing last year. 378002 was tested at Derby before it was converted to a 378/2, and units 225 - 234 / 255 - 257 were never 378/0s, so 378002 was the only 378/0 that didn't run in London before conversion to a 378/2.

378226 has entered service on the East London line. It's been out for the last two weeks or so - first noted by me in service on the 6th June. Simon

Confirmation in Today's Railways (UK) December issue that construction of the final three (255-257) is underway at Derby, with delivery to LOROL anticipated early 2011.
