On my journey home in the snow yesterday evening the S Stock I was on seemed to have hesitant, jerky braking approaching stations (East end of District Line).
There was heavy, wet snow and I'm sure the rail head conditions were slippery. I don't know if it was anything to do with re-gen braking, it seemed like slow motion anti-lock braking. We didn't overshoot or anything and the train berthed in the platforms fine, it just didn't feel right.
My daughter came home about half an hour later and said the train she was on behaved similarly.
Any thoughts?

Well, the person in the audience was seriously suggesting it as something as a quick and simple to implement way to improve cross-river links from Rotherhithe, given that a Rotherhithe-Isle of Dogs bridge is at minimum four years away. I don't think it stands a chance of being implemented, but it does deserve to be given a serious rather the flippant answer. struggling to think of many reasons to go from Rotherhithe to Wapping I can think of a good reason because I've done it. It makes a good circular river walk / pub crawl using Tower bridge to cross in the West and the Overground to cross between Rotherhithe and Wapping in the East. It's not quite fully riverside walk all the way but there are enough decent pubs on route to make it enjoyable.

General Purpose (GP) Wagons have full route availabilty and most engineer's wagons, plant and machinery will if at all possible. Obvious exceptions that come to mind are the new Tamping Machine, new Concrete mixer wagon and some of the Rail Grinding machines that have been used over the years
Lille Bridge depot used to be a good place to view engineers trains from the A4 West Cromwell Road bridge but they have all moved to Ruislip now and you can only see District Line passenger stock.

Another reason is the the rear driver can observe the load as it is transported

No, apart from normal tripcock mode the TRV only has Central Line ATP fitted. On the Victoria, Jubilee and Northern lines we now only run at night to an ITMP (Incompatible Train Movement Proceedure) which essentially means once all other trains are stabled on the line we can operate as sole train with current on.
Currently the Asset Inspection Train (AIT) only has tripcock mode but will be fitted initially with TBTC then other signalling systems will follow.

The Track Recording Vehicle has the same ATP system fitted to it as the Rail Adhesion Trains, it is a basic manual system and has some reliabilty issues but in general it gets the job done. The main drawback is its sensitivity to poor rail adhesion which gives an emergency brake application in the event of wheel slip. For this reason we avoid wet weather to reduce the likelyhood of getting flats.

It's easy to make a sweeping statement when you don't know exactly what happened, what damage was caused to the track, how easy it was to access and repair the damage and how awkward it is to inspect a train for damage in a tube tunnel and how disruptive to the rest of the line would it be to recover two trains stuck there in the middle of a busy service.

Maintenance and renewal of the railway will never end as you can never make anything truly maintenance free. All you can hope for is to improve it to such a condition that the required maintenence is minimal. Major works and will be going on for some time yet.

Earls Court heaving lunchtime today but the one way system working well.
The City is pretty dead with many workers taking the opportunity to go on holiday and traditional tourists appear to have been put off by the expectation of crowds.
The fact that it's quite easy to get around should be celebrated. I've been commuting between Dagenham and Lillie Bridge with no difficulties (apart from yesterday morning! I suppose the walk from Earls Court to West Ken done me some good).
Things may pick up with athletics in the main stadium and cycling in the velodrome starting.

Yes, painting on the Underground is a lot more involved than a quick respray. All sorts of approvals need to be sought.
From a practical point of view it needs to be extremely hard wearing (think of all the abuse a hand hold gets even in normal use). It also needs to be non toxic, non flammable and non fade with consistent colour reproduction.
I don't know but suspect they are powder coated rather than spray painted.

Many grab rails and poles are colour coded, for example: District green, Piccadilly blue, Victoria 2 different shades of blue for some reason? and Central Red - except stangely the grab rails above the doors are a dull grey - certainly not useful for the partially sighted!
It would be nice to see a bright purple on the Met as colours are very easily associated with things (in this case an Underground Line) immediately and almost without really thinking about it.
So if you scoot down the stairs and jump on a train at Liverpool Street you would know immediately whether it is a Met or Circle by the colour of the fittings

The railway still needs inspection, maintenance and cleaning. One night only maybe for 24 hour running but not a couple of weeks

Yes, I could not find any reference to Olympic timetables on the Tfl website either.
The service will be running for approx 1 hour later during the whole of the Olympics and approx 2 hours later for the opening and closing ceremonies.
Sorry I don't know any more detail

Very unusual for a tunnel to be scraped, more common for the platform as that is where the gap between train and infrastructure is designed to be closest.
I remember when the 96 stock was introduced on the Northern Line, tunnels had to be enlarged and track lowered in certain places (I'm talking just 10 or 20mm) to squeeze the stock in.

Watford North curve still there, we track record it every 8 weeks. St Mary's curve, of course, sadly gone but we used to record that too on and of the East London Line

TransPlant is almost fully located at Ruislip now apart from a handfull of maintenance staff remaining at Lillie Bridge for servicing Schomas and washing down Battery Locos. They only have two roads allocated to TransPlant now at Lillie Bridge with all the other roads used for stabling District Line Trains to make room for the introduction of S Stock.
Longer term Earls Court exhibition centre will be demolished after the Olympics (netball being played there) and ultimately the whole Lillie Bridge site demolished and redeveloped. It will be a sad day as I've worked at "The Bridge" since 1994

Londoners are as friendly as anyone else, it is the city life experience that affects people. I was born, raised and have worked in London all my life and do find people living in London less likely to strike up a conversation and be outgoing but once they get going are as good as anywhere else.
I am very lucky to be able to spend most of my free time in Cornwall and it's not only the Cornish who talk to every one it's the relocated Londoners, Brummies, Scousers, Mancunians etc. that are all really friendly. It's the location that has the negative affect on people, a pleasant environment works wonders.

Yes, it's all about minimising the time between stations but the human element would take into account a busy platform.

I've always found the acceleration into Liverpool Street East Bound disconcerting, especially when the platform is packed.

Quite what they expected him to do was not clear. I thought it was quite clear. Go and get some fresh air and a coffee, have a sit down for half an hour, then come back. It didn't seem to be getting close to lamping out time. I was sober as a judge watching it and I thought he was no worse than the average Friday night traveller.

Did anyone think that the BTP were a bit over zealous in stopping the drunk man travelling home. Yes, he was drunk but he was walking around and having a reasonable discussion with the officers. He realised he had drunk too much so had left his mates to go home to his missus. Quite what they expected him to do was not clear.

The Gate House is at the end of the depot road just as you have determined from google maps but the depot road is LU property, not a public road so I wouldn't recommend it.
