I seem to be good at blocking out the announcements on the District Line. I get on at Dagenham East and my stop is West Kensingtom. Many a time I have to check at Earls Court where we are going because I've "tuned out" the announcemant while I have a good read/snooze etc. Maybe I'm just too relaxed and used to commuting after 30 years.

Apart from running slower and delaying the service there would be no reserve capacity in the remaining motors if they also developed a problem. Not a good idea to carry on in service through the city with a known motor fault.

The Turnham Green one may well have not originated there but it has been there at least since 1982 when I started work at Chiswick Bus Works. I used to see it when I stood on the platform waiting for a Richmond to Gunnersbury.

Maybe, I'm not an expert on bogie design. My experience is with track geometry standards.

Another problem with the 83TS was their stiffness in coping with track defects. Stiff bogies meant track defect thresholds had to be lowered resulting in more temporary speed restrictions and increased track maintainence.
D Stock was similarly stiff but eventually had new, more flexible bogies fitted. With all the additional problems that the 83TS needed to overcome, they were scrapped.

Talking about Blake Hall remined me that when we used to operate the Weed Killing Train on the Epping - Ongar branch (the converted 38 stock languishing at Ruislip Depot) we used to only spray the track coming back from Onger because if we sprayed going in we struggled badly with wheelspin on the gradient back towards Epping

The Aldwych 72 tube Stock was at Northfields in the summer but I believe it is back at Aldwych now.
I walked the track from Holborn to Aldwych years ago just before it closed and the station was pretty eerie then.

info for jamesb: The Main Line comprises compressors, reservoirs, pipes and hoses controlled by a governor. The air is used for the Train Line (brakes), door engines and traction control. The system can cope with a small leak by the compessors working harder. A large leak (burst) means the air is escaping faster than it can be replaced so the affected part of the system would need to be isololated and the train withdrawn from service for repair.
