The 'damp soot' smell was prevalent on the sub surface lines right up until the mid seventies even on those sections where the LT panniers never ventured such as the southern part of the circle line. Over the years this gradually disappeared as the tunnels became cleaner. I would suggest that there is probably some building work going on in the vicinity that may have disturbed a disused part of the tunnel or allowed the ingress of water to the tunnel.

Am I the only one here that thinks this is a completely barmy idea with not a hope in hell of getting off the ground ? Had it been closer to April 1 I'd never have responded. -- Nick Is not this time of year known as the 'Silly Season'?

I dealt with the administration of the Youth Training Scheme in the 1980's. Some employers treated the trainees as cheap labour, one employer actually sacked staff and used trainees in their place. We actually had a case of a 16 year old girl working shifts and having to walk home in the early hours of the morning! all for 50p an hour. However some good employers used to 'cream off' the better trainees and they where offered jobs and even apprenticeships. It all depends on the checks and balances in place to protect those taking part in the scheme from exploitation. If my experience of the YTS is anything to go by there will be very little of that.

Without a word of warning the footbridge above was opened and the usual exit blocked off yesterday. I'd boarded the front carriage as usual at Stratford only to find the exit 4 carriages back towards London. As predicted it is not possible to go two abreast up these remarkably steep stairs and just one person coming the other way caused mayhem! A chap with a bike in a rush didn't help, nor was safe! I do wonder if picking the appropriate carriage further back will speed things up ( personally speaking) but I tell you what there are a lot of stairs and not all uniformly spaced. I would really recommend any one using this route to find an alternative as it is not a nice experience. So where are the elfin safety nuts when you need them?

Let's not get greedy ;D I know what you're suggesting, and in theory it would save time, but I think at the start and finish of each journey there would be space limitations on having the long train arrive - certainly in Neasden Depot space is limited. There is a potential way around this problem - Configure the train as follows Class 20 + S7 + 2 Class 20's + S8 + Class 20 then split into 2 trains when they arrive at Neasden. Xerces Fobe The train would then need four match wagons, making it even longer.

Is there any reason why an S7 & S8 (or 2x S8s) couldn't be delivered together - shouldn't be a problem for 4 x class 20s, or would the formation be too long? Once rail removal is possible could 16 x cars of A stock be removed as one train? Let's not get greedy ;D I know what you're suggesting, and in theory it would save time, but I think at the start and finish of each journey there would be space limitations on having the long train arrive - certainly in Neasden Depot space is limited. It would also be too long for some signal block sections when you take into account the two match wagons and a total of four locomotives. And don't forget that the two locomotives at the back of the train are not working.

The Underground also featured in the 'Quatermass Experiment' TV series in the 50's and wasn't there a Dr. Who episode (or two?) were the Underground also featured?

There used to be an outdoor escalator in Basildon town centre. The problem was not so much with the mechanism as with it having to be shut off during extreme weather, it is difficult to prevent a build up of ice on such escalators making them unsafe to use. Most railway rolling stock relies on electric motors either for direct drive (EMU) or power transmission (DE) and the technology is there to protect them from the weather.

Surely its possible to install some sort of extraction system in the tunnels themselves. All that is required is vertical shafts drilled at intervals equipped with extractor fans. There is no need for them to be more than 1 metre in diameter and the fans could be operated automatically by thermostat. This could also be backed up by air conditioning some stations.

The LCC tramways covers were for access to the supply cables which did not always follow the tram routes.

As we are all aware the A and C stock look very much like each other and are of similar dimensions. Do they share the same or similar motors, bogies or underframes?

He's on dodgy ground with pay strikes as the public are not on the side of the workers as they're one of the main causes of high fares. Where would the system be without any workers? The greatest wage bill is the number of managers who do little else but polish a chair.

I don't believe in ghosts but I had a strange experience about 25 years ago. At the time I was living in a cottage built in 1862, one day I saw a young girl of about 10 years old standing outside the back door, she had long blond hair and was wearing an old fashioned style grey dress. When I went to find out what she was doing there she had vanished, I assumed that it was a friend of my neighbours daughter who was about the same age. However when I mentioned it to her she said that she had no knowledge of anyone as described. Later when talking to another neighbour he told me that the young daughter of the family that lived there about 80 years before had died of Typhus.
