Over the past few weeks a footbridge, a rather impressive one at that I must say, has been built over the rails and the overhead wires to give access to the platforms once the work to install lifts from the station building to the platforms begins. This is scheduled to last until Spring 2012. Access, I believe, will be via the car park (and I hope they've had the gumption to arrange for oyster readers to be installed at the temporary exit). Whilst I appreciate the need for the works I for one will stop using the station on my journey home from work and use Goodmayes and a bus instead since I think egress will be painfully slow up and over the narrow stairs. I would guess that this will increase the time taken to leave the station by up to five minutes as the bus stops that serve the station ain't gonna be moved and many people use both the 62 and the 368 to continue their journeys I haven't seen any information regarding these works anywhere at the station and only found out via the National Rail website what the plans are. Would TFL have kept us better informed?

As to the original question, this is National Express we re talking about, the same company who were unable to arrange buses a few Sundays back between Witham and Shenfield due to signalling problems at Chelmsford.

"42" is the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything. Read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams for more information.

Without a word of warning the footbridge above was opened and the usual exit blocked off yesterday. I'd boarded the front carriage as usual at Stratford only to find the exit 4 carriages back towards London. As predicted it is not possible to go two abreast up these remarkably steep stairs and just one person coming the other way caused mayhem! A chap with a bike in a rush didn't help, nor was safe! I do wonder if picking the appropriate carriage further back will speed things up ( personally speaking) but I tell you what there are a lot of stairs and not all uniformly spaced. I would really recommend any one using this route to find an alternative as it is not a nice experience.

And now the footbridge has been closed with a notice saying "stairs incomplete" and entry/exit is once again via the station building. However there is still no information displayed anywhere on the station to inform "customers" what is going on , for how long and why etc etc.

Mea culpa, no more deviations or hesitations but there are bound to be some on-topic repetitions. This is NXEA we're talking about!

This sounds like a nightmare. Chadwell Heath is the closest station to the school where I work, and we often use it to take large groups of children on educational visits. Hmmmmm!

Update. I have watched with interest as first scaffolding and then very sturdy looking box sections were built adjacent to the northern boundary of the station, above the I&WEMR(a hidden railway gem if anyone is interested). This past weekend the section over the wires was built across to platforms 2/3 and the former temporary stairs were dismantled. Finally there is a plan in the ticket hall depicting the arrangements but with no explanation at all as to the reasons behind or the possible duration of the works. These new stairs do not access platform 1 at all and everything looks to be better planned than the previous effort. I wait with anticipation to see how this pans out and whether a spring 2012 finishing date is still on the cards.

The temporary stairs to the platforms opened on Friday and seemed more than adequate. They are wide enough to cope with the usual rush hour passenger numbers and because they lead eventually to the ticket office won't cause the same disruption to bus seeking passengers that the original offering caused.

Regardless of any design of stairs, they could do with a copper on permanent point duty outside to book cars dropping people off on top of the narrow road bridge. Inconsiderate gits the lot of them, particularly as there's a station car park within 30 yaerds or so where they can do it without inconveniencing other road users.
