Great photos, thank you. These new trains are beautiful, bright with large windows. As 2009 starts tonight, let's hope they will come to service quickly!!

The windows are smaller than on the trains they are to replace I'm afraid. Standing passengers will not be able to see out, as they can on 1992TS.

But on the Victoria line, there is nothing to look at, so you don't need to see out!

The problem with the windows on 09TS is they are smaller than on 95/96TS, because there is a big gap between the windows and the doors. Is this so that passengers don't see the dirt on the back of the doors?

Aren't the windows also smaller so that ventilated air can be fed into the carriage at head height rather than at waist height, as on the 92/5/6ts.

The 09TS windows seem to be the same height as the windows on 95/96TS (that don't have big windows like the 92TS because of the original plan to keep the 83TS on the Jubilee). I don't think any more new trains will have windows as big as on the 92TS, as there have been complaints that the big windows make the trains hotter (like a greenhouse).

Yes, too much glazing can affect heat gains and loses. The windows are too small on the 09ts, and people won't be able to see the stations. Thankfully the DVA will help in that. Hopefully the next batch of trains will have windows between the sizes of the 92-95/96 stocks.

Very true, greenhouse, and the very last line to be affected is the Vic!!!!

I'm sure I heard once that the 09 stock was originally due to start in-service in January 2009. Does anyone know what the timescale is now?

I don't think they are running a 09TS out of service through the day yet, so it seems that it has been delayed by at least a few months.

I have been told to expect SSTO training to commence in March 2009. Not sure what date is pencilled in for passenger services to start. EDIT: Trains 1 and 2 should be running empty in traffic hours in April 2009. Train 1 will be driven only by Metronet staff and will not enter passenger service until the VLU is completed, due to the fact that it will need extensive modifications. Additional training would be required for LUL staff to operate it since the design has changed for the rest of the fleet, and therefore the extra time, money, blah blah blah... Train 2 will begin running empty at about the same time as train 1, but with LUL SSTOs at the helm. Provided everything goes smoothly, passengers should get to try it out in June 2009.

Indeed - which begs the question of why one of the winning entries to the "design-a-new-routemaster" competition has ... a glass roof!!

On the subject of windows, and I'm sure Ive made this comment before, but from the outside the side of the train looks awefully out of proportion. I fiddled with a side elevation in paint and made this: benedict.fotopic.net/p53600911.htmlJust painting a fake ventillation stip along the side makes them look a lot better, I personally think. Any comments welcome though

I think the fake ventilation strips would make them look better! It would also give the passengers the illusion of more ventilation, like the dummy fans on the 67TS.

As for the window issue and the DVA being needed to know where you are. Is this the first time forum members on here have spoke well of DVA and thought it needed?

It gives the elevation much more balance and is reminiscent of the 73TS.

The DVA voice overs are in the process of being recorded this month - a voice over artist has been chosen to blend in with the established announcements.

But hasn't the design changed after train 2 was built as well? Yes, but not by as much. Some additional training will be given to SSTOs before driving train 3.

so there will be a new DVA voice? is it a man or woman this time? and please say there will be a wider selection of announcements we are extremely limited on what we can do :-(

A woman I'm guessing, since it is to blend in with the established announcements. I can confirm there will be announcements on board to state relevant service updates when approaching interchange stations such as Oxford Circus.
The announcements will not be limited due to the system being advanced. The key line which comes to mind with 'limited' is the Northern Line, hence the reason why no interchanges are announced approaching stations, limited manual announcements (if any), and everything is very robotic.

The new DVA will be able to give service updates on approach to stations!! WOW!! that is going to be really great!!! guess it will be down to the NOC to keep the system updated tho?

Yeah not a bad piece of tech! xD
"staff from the Service Control Centre will be able to input information directly to the trains for in-car display" is what was told to me following an enquiry.
In addition there was mention that the system is intelligent so it will only display such messages on trains that are carrying customers towards the area affected by any disruption

sounds good to me :-) altho NOC are not the quickest to update informtion, lol. It would be good if we could have like a memory stick or something, so if there are closures we can record it once, and repeat it if needed, and the take it to the next train with us, so its our voice etc

Unfortunately, LU's aim is to get as many pre-recorded messages as possible.
This is to ensure that the amount of times staff should make manual announcements is to a minimum. :/

This is to ensure that the amount of times staff should make manual announcements is to a minimum. :/ TBH, the main reason that there will be as many automated announcements as possible is due to the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (RVAR). The regs mandate that any message that is played audibly should also be shown visually on the internal displays, for the benefit of hearing impaired people. Obviously that is somewhat tricky to do with a live announcement made by the T/Op. Of course, there will also be situations where a "live" announcement has to be made which therefore cannot be shown visually - but the idea is that these should be kept to a minimum. ttr

to be honest, i think the more announcements they can provide us the better!! I know from experience that there are a few people who HATE making personal announcements, they will make them, but they cringe at it, so for them pressing a button or selecting an announcement will make life so much more easier. As for the passsengers, to have the same tone, dialect and accent all the time Im assuming wouldalso be a great advantage :-)
Lets just hope they make sensible ones tho :-p
There is 1 announcement on the DVA that just says, Ladies and gentlemen part of the victoria line is closed. Thats it, where is the point in that? lol
