Also from Dalston to Shadwell you've got a maximum linespeed of 40. You've also got the incline from Dalston to Haggerston, and then a 25 mph max speed halfway from Hoxton through to Shoreditch High Street. That's probably why you feel like we're plodding along.

Are there any plans for renumbering the Highbury & Islington platforms and Stratford while I'm on the subject?

I guess both of the things you've mentioned (DC acceleration and linespeeds) would contribute to the fact that the 378s feel slow.
Presumably then the mechanism for tube trains (also running on DC) must be different, as the acceleration is a lot higher.
I dunno, to me it just feels like there's a lack of urgency on central and northern section, but that's not to belittle the line, which I think is generally fantastic

I guess also the timings we have are quite generous too. On the down we usually have an extra minute at Shoreditch and at Canada Water (hence why there's a lot of dwell time there).

Not quite ELL but, there's hell of a lot of dwell time built into the timetable on the Valleys Lines out of Cardiff, There's about two minutes at Cardiff Queen Street then at various other stations with a 6 minute dwell time at Pontypridd!

There always seems to be a 2 minute wait southbound at New Cross Gate.

NXG is also a point for driver changeover and additional time is allowed for pathing requirements on the Southern section.

Are there any plans for renumbering the Highbury & Islington platforms and Stratford while I'm on the subject? Not to my knowledge and I very much doubt there will be, them having spent lots of money on new signage. Also at Stratford they've tiled the platform numbers on the walls of the refurbished subways.

And as soon as they start renumbering Stratford, someone will come up with a new platform or service or something. There can't have been many times in the last 25 years where there were no plans or works going on to add or upgrade something at or around Stratford.

Platforms have been renumbered at Stratford though, haven't they? The old NLL low-level platforms, that are now to be the DLR StratInt platforms, used to be 1 & 2, but those numbers have been transferred to the NLL high-level platforms that used to be (if memory serves) 10a and 11a. The platforms that WERE 1 & 2 are being renumbered 16 & 17, aren't they?

The platforms that WERE 1 & 2 are being renumbered 16 & 17, aren't they? Not quite. The original low-level platforms that were part of the North Woolwich line (and will reopen as DLR platforms serving Stratford International have vacated their numbers, 1 & 2, and become 16 & 17, adjacent to the Jubilee platforms 13, 14 and 15. the NEW platforms 1 & 2 are the NEW London Overground platforms serving the service to Richmond via Willesden Junction, and NEW track joins the existing Channelsea curve lines at Carpenters Road North Junction (although 'Carpenters Road' has virtually disappeared under the Olympics site!). Finally, and to correct you, there is NO platform 11a. Platform 10a was the original platform 10, when an additional platform was inserted on the up main line in place of the TWO platformed lines (9 & 10) and the two 'through' lines between platform 8 (down suburban) and and the original platform 9 (up main stopping)!

The new platforms 1 and 2 are completely new platforms, partially on the site of the sidings which were alongside the Temple Mills line. The original platforms on the Temple Mills line, used occasionally in the past by NLL services, are still there numbered 11 and 12 (not 10a and 11a). These two are used (mainly platform 11) by the Stratford - Stansted Airport service.

OK, I got the 9/10/11(a) bits wrong, but aren't you splitting hairs over the other points? The platforms haven't moved, they've acquired new numbers. No amount of technobabble changes the fact that the platform numbers changed! "Vacated their numbers...."??!?!?! Ergo, the original point about platforms never being renumbered is hogwash!

I dont think there is that much in it between a 378 running in AC or DC. I was told two 378s left Highbury at the same time going towards Canonbury and their performance was near identical.
As for aggressive driving - these days train drivers are taught to drive defensively. But I found this little gem on you tube.

I am sorry, I thought you were unsure of the situation, so I gave it. Nothing to do with 'splitting hairs or technobabble' (whatever you mean by that). In any case, TWO of the platforms are brand NEW! In addition, platform 9 is a recreation, so THAT too is 'new'! Take a chill pill!

According to a local website, LO have put in a request to Southern who operate the DOI's on the southern section of the ELL to abbreviate Highbury and Islington, so we should see the old 3 line dot matrix service back shortly.

Yes I spoke to the station staff this morning at Forest Hill who said that they've complained too. Apparently they're being asked quite a bit.

Is the timetable for H&I to Dalston Junction and beyond to get a tweaking at all? At the moment, I'm not seeing too much benefit of this new extension other than the cross-platform change at Highbury. Its about 10-20mins wait for a connecting train at Highbury (depending on which change) and then a further wait of three or four mins at Dalston Junction - not sure why that wait?
So far, the old way, walking from Kingsland to Junction was a quicker journey.

On my way home from Canada Water, I noticed that trains are leaving southbound a minute later than timetabled according to the DOI's. Is this to save the trains being held at New Cross Gate?
Also the Southern DOI's have been updated to abbreviate Islington.

Also the Southern DOI's have been updated to abbreviate Islington. Both North and Southbound trains are booked to wait at Canada Water for 1 minute (if running on time) due to the interchange with the Jubilee Line.

Finally managed to find some videos of the new route as I haven't had a chance to try it myself and I noticed that just before H&I the train announces "Change here for London Overground Services to Richmond and Stratford". Now surely changing at Cononbury would be a better and faster idea for getting to Stratford. Also why is the service to CJ not acknowledged?
Why don't they announce "Change here for London Overground Services to Stratford" at Cononbury and "Change here for London Overground Services to Richmond & Clapham Junction" at H&I?

I thought this was strange, too. Especially as the new announcements on the NLL say that you can change at H&I for trains to New Cross - even though there are no direct trains to New Cross.
Come to think of it, Goblin trains terminating at Gospel Oak also do not mention Clapham Junction.

With regards to the ELL Highbury extension, according to TfL their "Journey Planner had a fault which meant that certain journeys originating at Canonbury and Highbury & Islington were not displaying properly. The fault has been fixed and journeys are now displaying correctly". This means that both the TfL and Network Rail journey planners should now correctly take account of the Highbury / Dalston Junction extension when giving journey advice.

Communication of routes at stations on LO is poor. I remember a few months ago helping some Australian tourists who ended up confused at Clapham Junction rather than at Richmond, no doubt because the signage where they got on suggested that all trains went to Richmond.
IMO LO need to number their routes.
Yamanote line-style LCDs could also replace the line diagrams in the 378s showing the current route the train is running rather than the present spaghetti.

You could also adopt another feature seen in Japan, by making every rail line have its own colour and name. So you could keep the ELL as Orange, the WLL as Red, the NLL as Blue and the GBL as Green?
