I assume a Finsbury Park extension would have been an extremely expensive venture. Would it have entailed a dive-under/over the NLL using the Graham Curve? ... The Graham Road curve is the connection between NLL and Liverpool Street lines in Hackney - I think you are referring to the Canonbury connection Thanks, that's the one! Half asleep I was ! ;D

In this revival of orange as a fashionable colour, imagine what people in 30 years will think of LO branded stations?!

www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/15360.aspx states that: "Trains every five minutes (increasing to every four minutes in 2012) will call at all stations between Highbury & Islington and Surrey Quays."Is this true? I thought some of the current 5 min service was still planned to terminate at Dalston Jct.

John Smith the former Labour party leader was due to visit Basildon on the day he died. This did not prevent one of the local rags on the following day giving a full report of his 'visit'.

It says that of the trains that do, there will be one every 5 mins. IIRC the Clapham Jn trains will only run as far as Dalston.

Also states "The extension has made travelling easier with cross-platform interchanges at Highbury & Islington and Canonbury."Though a footbridge is still required in the same direction of travel.

No not opening today, but there were 2 Stakeholder trips today. But the public opening will have to wait for the Mayor. The full service details can be found on the NR and ORR websites. The Track Access Application for passenger services indicates commencement on Monday 28 February.

They really ought to get their marketing right don't you think? Just missing out the phrase "cross-platform" would have been OK and would have prevented you (quite correctly) from posting the above! ;D Just a thought, I've been reading back through the various threads on here about 378s, the ELL, and the upgrade program in general. I have to say that despite all the doom and gloom prophesized, the almost ecstatic glee posted when 378 deliveries fell behind or a unit failed, and various other portents of disaster, I think we've ended up with a rather cool London Overground railway pretty much as promised!

Indeed, from the outside, and seemingly on this forum from the inside, London Overground seems to be setting an example for the rest of TfL to follow

I agree - most people (non train enthusiasts) I speak to about it much prefer the state of LOROL now than before.

Apparently the ELL has 50,000 customers on weekdays which was above previous estimates and this is before the extension to H&I opens in over a weeks time.
There are still small issues to iron out such as the gaps in the late night service, the final straight through train to Sydenham leaving Canada Water just before midnight while LUL services operate up to an hour later and Oyster Card sales at the former Southern stations, but otherwise it's been an overall success in South London at least.

Both the National Rail Journey planner & the Tfl Journey Planner both claim that the Extension will open on the 28th February.
One question I do have though, whilst looking on the Tfl Journey Planner it shows that the journey between Highbury & Islington and Shoreditch High Street takes 11 minutes for Crystal Palace bound trains but it takes 13 minutes for West Croydon bound trains.
Why is this?

Why do they have to be booked to wait 2minutes at DLJ?

Because the West Croydon trains are booked to wait at Dalston Jct for 2 minutes This is a shame. I always find these delays frustrating. Is it to avoid conflicting paths with the turners at Dalston?

This is a shame. I always find these delays frustrating. TWO MINUTES!! Dan, you've got to learn to chill out. Whistle a short tune, read a page of the paper, plan a coup, do whatever for the duration. Two minutes is nothing to get frustrated about. ;D

I don't know the asnwer to that but surely if their paths were to conflict they would just depart Highbury & Islington 2 minutes later. Also on looking into this it appears that WC bound trains are actually held at DJ for 3 minutes and the CP bound trains for 1 minute.

Could it be that these delays are simply to regulate the service? I.e. to make sure there is always a 7-8 min gap between trains at H&I, and always a 5 min gap between trains at Dalston Junction?
Because otherwise, if you have a five minute service at Dalston but with two out of three trains coming from Highbury, you would end up having to send trains from Highbury at alternating gaps of 5 mins and then 10 mins. Having the delay at Dalston simply allows you to send trains from Highbury at a more consistent frequency.

Well we'll know if the timetable works as intended after today (Wed) and tomorrow (Thurs) as we'll be running a Trial Ops. Basically every train to and from West Croydon & Crystal Palace will run empty between Dalston Jct and Highbury & Islington according to the timetable.

The TFL journey planner recognises a no change ELL journey from Canonbury to Crystal Palace wef 28th Feb 2011, but does not recognise a no change ELL journey Canonbury to West Croydon either on 28th Feb 2011 nor 1st June 2011? The National Rail journey planner does recognise a no change Canonbury to West Croydon journey on 28th Feb 2011. Neither site recongnised a journey over the Western Curve extension wef 27th Feb however.

Sorry if this is old news, but it looks like the ELL extension to H&I will be opening in late February, well ahead of the official May date. There are direct H&I - West Croydon trains in the National Rail journey planner for Sun 28th Feb onwards According to Railnews, it is going to open this Monday.

Must be getting very near. I was on a East London Line (New Cross to Dalston Junction) where the stickers had been added to the route map on the train showing as running Highbury and Islington. It is also on the route map here. www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/15359.aspx

The London Re-Connections site is advising "the ELL extension to Highbury & Islington is now confirmed for Monday 28th February. It appears that there are currently no plans for a limited Sunday service. The first public train from Highbury & Islington is scheduled for 0955."

I can confirm that the ELL extension will be open for business from Monday 28 January, rather then getting the info from rumours, this came from the horses mouth in the form of the Managing Director, who told a group of Conductors at a meeting yesterday.
