Here's a pic of Dave from the very first forum meet. The date stamp on the picture is 20/08/2005 at 1458.

Ten years already. How time flies. I would hope Dave can be proud that his forum still exists and continues to be the premier Underground forum on the net!

I have an aunt who's lived in London all of her adult life (she's retired now). She always "Westminister". Argh.
Best one is one I heard through the grapevine of Americans sometimes pronouncing Leicester Square as lie-ses-ter.

I've had this on a Northern Line train and an a 444 on a trip up from Weymouth to London.

You're not alone in this. I've never expected particularly comfortable seats on tube trains - mass transit doesn't usually warrant it. However the new seats that went into the 96ts a few years back were rock hard, same in 95ts. They've softened a bit but they're not a touch on what was in the 67s or the 73s. You could argue that that's a good thing - those seats were too bouncy for some, but I still quite like them.
This is not isolated to TfL though - the same is happening on the mainline trains as well. Look at the IEPs, or the Electrostars - especially Southern's. And the seats on the Gatwick Express are a disgrace, especially in first class. (For those who don't know, GatEx has very hard, upright seats, harsh white lighting, and the difference between first and standard is an antimacassar...).
Comfort is very much a personal thing and what one person finds comfortable is very uncomfortable for another. Still, I think the trend towards very hard seating is not one that should be encouraged!

Let's go easy with the "why can't we just donate it to ___" posts, please. It's not going to get donated, it's going to be demolished, and this thread is starting to get a little towards fantasy.

Agree with Simon here. I *hate* the way the Northern line is set up now; it really is "on/off" and it's noticeable. When in manual the t/ops were able to coast then gently apply power to maintain speed as necessary; the new system seems to be completely unable to do this. As someone who is somewhat mechanically minded, I can see how this would impact the trains much harder - more wear on components, especially bushes and suspension components that take the brunt of the constant changes in power delivery. Certainly if I drove my car the way the computers drive the trains, I would expect to wear through engine mounts and suspension components at a much higher rate! From a passenger perspective, I don't usually get travel sick; it's very rare. However there have been a few times on the Northern line when I've felt decidedly "off". Never happens on the Vic or Central, both of which seem to have far superior systems.

Saw one at Southampton Central a week or two, standing in for a GWR service which is usually run with a borrowed SWR 158.

BR's Class 442s had possibly one of the most comfortable seats I've ever used, both in standard and first. Travelling on them was a pleasure. Until Southern got their hands on them... and goodness only knows what SWR will do with them now.

Thought you guys might like to know that "Mini Metro", subway builder / simulator is currently available in Humble Bundle's "Indie Bundle 19". If you're not familiar with Humble Bundle, it's a great way of supporting smaller software houses and getting some good software for very little. Or look at it the other way around; it's a good way to get good software for next to nothing! www.humblebundle.com/

I needed some sooner rather than later (gifts) so I gave away mine. Spoke to the Friends who are happy to sell me replacements if I can go to Acton to collect, which is not a problem. The diagrams in question were D-stock line and central London, both from 2003. angelislington - Very interested please, will PM.

Aha, that would be why they're not on the museum shop website. Thanks, I'll get in touch with them.

At the Old Oak Common open day, the museum was selling old in-carriage tube maps which I think were from the C-stock, and Met line diagrams from the A-stock. Unless I'm being blind, I don't see these on the museum website - are they available for sale to the general public, or just at train-related events?

It blows my mind that even with modern technology, this stuff can be done. The precision needed must be hard enough above ground, let alone underground in clay! And to think the Camden Town junctions were built around the working railway with minimum disruption and none of the technology we have now. Just absolutely amazing.

philthetube That's pretty much what North End was saying. Also as North End said, running an empty train down there to clear the platforms would be a good idea, but given the circumstances, somewhat impractical - there'd be a big enough backlog of trains in the area already. Sounds like the staff did the best they could under the circumstances. Personally I don't care for the Northern Line's ATO; it's always felt a bit rough to me. I find any of the other ATO lines to give a much smoother ride. Regardless, glad I was out of London a day earlier than usual this weekend!

Not a definitive answer, but I would imagine there's some sort of station by-pass that can be programmed in. It's a newer system than the Central, so hopefully improved in that regard, so I don't see why it wouldn't be able to handle multiple closures. The auto-announcer might have more problems. While it can announce "the next station is closed", I doubt it could announce "the next three stations are closed". But given the circumstances I would expect the Train Operator to make manual announcements anyway.

Sad I'm not going to make this but that's how it goes sometimes. I was on the last unrefurbished D and I'll be on the tour, so hopefully that makes up for it. I'm counting on Chris M to take some good photos of today's events, and hoping the behaviour shown by a certain percentage of enthusiasts on C stock tour and the last A stock won't be repeated today.

I am debating writing to the manager and/or their customer service people. While I do appreciate that we booked the tables very late (1:30pmish), there were only a couple of people sitting at them at that time, and the reserved signs didn't go up until they had left. For the staff to just place reserved signs down for the French group while we were obviously still using the tables I felt was very much out of order and was very much a notice of eviction!
They could have, at least, given us a bit of notice - ideally when I asked to reserve the tables. "You can book the tables but only until xx:xx as we already have an existing booking." Unless the French group also booked very late, in which case I would have expected them to have been told "sorry, those tables are taken by a booked party".
I wonder if next time we should book in advance and reserve the tables until 8pm. The French group (who I'm pretty sure were there last year) will have to find alternative tables!
All that said, it was good to see old faces and to meet a couple of new ones. An afternoon sitting in a pub with good company is rarely a bad thing.

For those of you going directly to the pub...I am planning to be at the Penderels Oak from around 1pm. I'll have the forum phone with me, so feel free to call or text if you can't find the group or the pub! The pub is pretty easy to find - from Holborn station, turn right along High Holborn. If you pass Krispy Kreme on your right then you're heading in the right direction. When you pass Starbucks (on your left), you're almost there; the pub is on your right. You can also turn left out of Chancery Lane station, pass Nat West and the 3 store on your left, then Starbucks on your right. The pub will be on your left. The forum phone is 07930 942179.Looking forward to seeing whoever turns up!
