The other day, I had my first ride on a TFL Rail class 345 train (I don't hasten to try out new rolling stock - I know they've been around over a year). It was perhaps the most uncomfortable seating I've used on any train outside the former Soviet bloc. Is it an ineffable rule that every generation of new stock must get even more uncomfortable, with hard, unpadded seating? I remember the deep comfort of Gresley coachesd - even the Quints at the end of their lives, still with buttoned horsehair and springs in the decommissioned firsts. Even the 305s and 309s weren't bad. Now all that seems to be provided is a quarter inch of poor foam over an MDF or plastic base. Jugoslav railways unter Tito weren't so meagre. The 345s make even 92TS seem comfortable. I know there's a ire risk from much deeper foam, but am I alone in feeling shortchanged?|

You're not alone in this. I've never expected particularly comfortable seats on tube trains - mass transit doesn't usually warrant it. However the new seats that went into the 96ts a few years back were rock hard, same in 95ts. They've softened a bit but they're not a touch on what was in the 67s or the 73s. You could argue that that's a good thing - those seats were too bouncy for some, but I still quite like them.
This is not isolated to TfL though - the same is happening on the mainline trains as well. Look at the IEPs, or the Electrostars - especially Southern's. And the seats on the Gatwick Express are a disgrace, especially in first class. (For those who don't know, GatEx has very hard, upright seats, harsh white lighting, and the difference between first and standard is an antimacassar...).
Comfort is very much a personal thing and what one person finds comfortable is very uncomfortable for another. Still, I think the trend towards very hard seating is not one that should be encouraged!

Rail is never going to attract people out of their cars with seats like that. Even the most basic of cars has better seating than an IEP. (And so do most road coaches).
