Tunneling of the Northern Line Extension (NLE) between Battersea and Kennington was completed today with the breakthrough of the 2nd tunnel boring machine today. TBM Amy along with sister TBM Helen have been tunneling since April to carve out the 3.2kms of tunnel that will allow Northern line services via Charing X to run to Battersea of the spurs from the Kennington Loop. Where specifically is that chamber that they're stood in? I very much doubt it's where the extension meets the loop - so presumably it's a bit further up the line, with that last section being/has been dug without TBM?

The caption says that the TBMs will be recovered through the shaft at Kennington Green, so they are probably there.

Heard about this not long ago. It's one step to completion of the NLE. I'm guessing the track has to be fitted next. After that it depends on whether they have the funds to fit out the two new stations. I assume the Kennington loop is still there?

Next stage is to link up the newly constructed tunnel and spurs to the existing Kennington Loop which involves removing the original cast iron tunnel rings during possessions the last of which is scheduled to be between the 10th and 13th of November. Another possession is due to take place on 22nd/3rd December and for a few hours on New Years Day, aside from these closurse the loop has been experiencing near normal levels of usage and will remain available as a reversing point after the NLE is completed. Below is a fascinating picture showing the new tunnel exposing the existing tunnel rings still carrying the Northern line. Taken by Infoworks Diagram of works in the Kennington area from TubeNoise

Can imagine that picture becoming quite well known over the next few decades.

holborncentral , that photo was taken quite a while back so works have advanced significantly since then, this weekend is scheduled to be the last of three weekends dedicated to the "break out" of part of the Kennington Loop creating the step plate junction. Possession in railway terms is just a portion of a railway line that is closed/cordend off for engineering work. The term refers to authority of section of a track being passed from the signaller/line controller to the person in charge of the possession enabling the scope of works to proceed. At the extremities of the possession zone red marker lights accompanied by a stop board or notice warn of the possession, the Met on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday late nights have possession markers around Finchley Rd due to the track and drainage work going on until late 2018

At first I thought that was a train in an oversized tunnel, but I now realise its the old tunnel inside the new one. Can you explain a bit more though? Which direction are we looking? Where will the new tunnel come in - behind the camera? Why does the new tunnel have a step-down in diameter?

I'd assume that's where the junction will be, so the photo is matching the changing tunnel sizes shown on the map diagram.

I don't know whether this is the western or eastern junction. If it is the western one then the camera is looking approximately north-east - in the direction of travel for northbound trains. If it is the eastern, then it is looking approximately north towards oncoming southbound trains. In either case the junction is approximately λ-shaped, with the wider end (requiring the larger diameter tunnel) behind the camera.

Where will the new tunnel come in - behind the camera? Why does the new tunnel have a step-down in diameter? Picture is taken on the Northbound side of the loop/step plate junction looking north on the weekend of the 15th-18th September, the original 1926 cast iron tunnel segments have already been removed suggesting that the next phase may include the removal of the bottom tray of the old tunnel alignment. As Chris M said it's a y/^ shaped divergent junction. The part of the tunnel that houses the points will naturally be more capacious as it mus house two tracks, the step down in diameter is returning to a single track formation but is still roughly six feet larger in diameter as they had to be dug around the existing tunnel(s) The below photographs were taken by Infoworks, the link to the article hasn't been successfully embedded into the photo so may give an error message. Photo showing the initial cut away of the original tunnel lining during the 52 hour engineering possession. The finished result, next step is to remove the tray of the old tunnel lowering the track in the process.

Wonder how long before it gets coated in grime?

Surreal. Wonder what they do with all the removed segments; presumably there isnt much of a need for spares! Would they have a use in station reconstruction projects I wonder.

Given that the removed rings are over 90 years old they certainly won't be re-used in their current form although they can theoretically be melted down to form part of the newer spheroidal graphite iron rings which was pioneered in 1943 and has been used recently on tunnel the works from Baker Street to Bond Street on the Jubilee. The papers published by TfL just refer to disposals.

It blows my mind that even with modern technology, this stuff can be done. The precision needed must be hard enough above ground, let alone underground in clay! And to think the Camden Town junctions were built around the working railway with minimum disruption and none of the technology we have now. Just absolutely amazing.

They made up the shortcrete slurry with holy water... Would that have helped keep the ghosts at bay? Well I've never seen a GOBLIN train in that tunnel ever.

Has anyone got an update on how this is all progressing, please?
Top photos. I too am wondering how they did the tunnel-within-a-tunnel.
What can be seen at street level?
