Thanks for the photos neasdena60, as far as the body is concerned it isn't in all that bad a condition! I expect that in a few weeks it would've gotten much worse! It doesn't look unsafe to move, but better to be safe than sorry!

I suspect it's the removal of parts of the underframe equipment that has rendered it unsafe to move, rather than the structural integrity of the body.

Either way this isn't going anywhere soon! (Other than the scrapyard!)

There's always something quite poignant about seeing a train that has been involved in an incident, still wearing the last set number (and indeed destination) it had at the time of the event .

It's crazy! The train looks in good nick! Better than many of its kin to be fair! Its a real shame that this unit is going to be scrapped! 6036 is also visable in the background of the photo too!

Apart from the roof dome, what else was damaged?

Apart from the roof dome, what else was damaged? not a great deal, it all could be repaired. its fate was sealed after a damaged truck was found on the other motor car, and the never ending shortage of spare parts began to bite, thus it was stripped of many parts.

Shed day,or daily overhaul as some depots call it,is when as well as checking shoegear, brake blocks and trucks all electrical circuit integrity is checked(by megger)motor, compressor & MA brushes checked for wear and changed if req,all moving electrical contacts cleaned or changed as req and greasing and lubrication. On older stocks it used to be every 9 weeks but this was extended to 18 weeks some years ago, from 67TS onwards it's every 36 weeks and I think for stock from 92TS onwards it's once a year.

Thanks for all the photos that have been posted, not long before external parts are cannibalised.

The first unit of the current working fleet is set to be scrapped. Unit 5173, hit a tree on the uxbridge branch in may 2007, suffering front end damage. Since then, after a number of inspections, the unit has been robbed of all useful parts, ( above the solebar ) to keep other fleet units running. To describe the leading cab as gutted would be a understatement. It is currently stabled on 29 south road at neasden awaiting the cutter's torch................... RIP A-Stock! You will be sorely missed

astock5000 -
"When did 5173 get its trailer car roof dome?"
It was when it was refurbished - was one of the units of Train 1.

astock5000 - "When did 5173 get its trailer car roof dome?" It was when it was refurbished - was one of the units of Train 1. Brian Hardy mentions the reason on page 41 in the fifteenth edition of his book London Underground Rolling Stock. He comments that 4-car unit 5172-5173 was indeed part of the first A-stock refurbishment (the other was de-icing unit 5008-5009 which later became 5234-5235). The reason for 5173's unique dome was due to the fact that no spare DM domes existed and therefore a trailer example needed to be used and adapted.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this! It's real shame to see it being scrapped, but as is said on many, many car forums when a prized car is scrapped, at least parts of it will live on and help other cars (or trains!) to keep on rolling. It only becomes a real shame when they start being scrapped wholesale because they're life expired and nothing is left at all. Do we know if the museum will be taking one on?

I know the museum want one - a train that sees (the best part of) 50 years in service would be a criminal omission - but space is an issue.

Apparently the plan is for the LAST A stock to leave service in May 2010.
This seems very soon - personally I'm sceptical!

No way! The first S stock will not enter service till 2010! I heard it will be 2012 we the A stock is withdrawn ( and a sad day it will be!).
A 4 car train will be saved-even if I have to do it alone!

There are enough people out there who could band together to do such a thing, and from what I hear on that conifferous grapevine, there are influential members of the combine who are sympathetic to the cause aswell...
As with all these things the question is 'where', not 'how' or 'how much'; and I really don't think I'm naive in saying that.

Those 83's may as well have been scrapped IMHO. I'd rather remember them by historical pictures and videos of them doing what they were designed for.............trains.

From what they had planned originally the trains were supposed to enter late 2009 to 2012 I think. They are made in derby at the bombardier place where they do the d-stock refurbs and the 2009 stock and from what i can remember its not big enough to build two different stocks.
Having said that it was a few years since I have been there so I could be completely wrong and talking rubbish.
They also discussed the option of a heads up display on the S-stock which would have the target speed and things like that on it.
Cost and practicality will have ruled it out im sure.

This unit has now been confirmed as scrap, and has been removed from the asset register.
