I would be surpised if there wasn't some big photocall with the Mayor and some head honchos of all the companies involved in the refurbishment when the line reopens, but which direction will they travel (first)?

Five minutes into it all, there will probably be a massive signal failure. By that time, Metronot will have scarpered

how about some toothpicks in certain signal relays? and only running one train. At least they know it will run then.

What a cynical bunch you lot are! ;D As if engineering projects on LUL ever run late. Look at the wonderful Connect radio project: that's only six years late. As for signal and train failures, LU don't suffer from them do they? ;D (Tongue firmly in cheek when written!)

I can remember some of the summer line closures before PPP overrunning, not forgetting what happens when you open something before it's ready (JLE). So given the scale of the W&C Line project, I don't think you can really single out Metronet if the project does overrun. Metronet are refurbishing the system on a scale never seen before (thanks to the lack of investment over the last 30 years), so engineering projects overrunning are just a risk of the trade.

I have a piece of me in the drain. It was part of my 'empire' when I was SCM on the Central and I had a small part to play when I later moved to System Upgrades. Metronet are not angels but, sorry to say, we (LUL) and in particular, CED (now just ED) and what was 'Marketing & Planning' put a lot of stupid obstacles in their path, too many were over-the-top specifications which even an airline operator wouldn't have to meet. M&P made a host pernickerty requirements which were extreme in their pettiness. Frankly, I was sometimes embarrassed to be part of the LUL team when I heard what some of 'our' people were demanding. I certainly understood Metronet's exasperation at being blackmailed. Pot, Kettle, Black...

I spent Thursday down at Waterloo and ended up taking two round trips on the line.
While I can't say too much, the cynics may well be right and those who think it's going to look brand new like the JLE was may be in for some disappointment...

you'd hope the new livery and refurbished interior on the trains would be noticed as well - otherwise what's the point in doing it!

That, and there are no speed restrictions anymore, apparently there were a few on such a short stretch. The new track does give a much smoother ride, and is a massive improvement. The speed restrictions are still there, as they are required around the curves, which in some points are basically an S-bend. Unfortunately we can't get rid of them! The TSRs are all removed though.

what exactly have they done with the signalling system? There is a new computerised control system, there have been adjustments to the speed control into Bank (to improve reversing capacity), and also some adjustments to the signalling in the Waterloo Depot (to improve flexibility). The signalling is still colour light signals, with train stops, and relay interlockings.

The other noticeable change is that some signals now have Remote Securing installed. Most of the work has been related to putting the line to standard, removing the redundant wiring associated with the ATP which was never commissioned, replacing the hard wired trainstops with snakes, etc.

Could help speed things up that little bit more, especially around those S bends, and would tick another line off the list. Considering the whole lot was getting refurbished I would've thought installing ATO would be perfect timing.

IIRC, it was an idea to install ATO when the line closed for the first refurb in 1993, when the old 1940's units were removed....

Maybe it's a good way of keeping up Leytonstone based drivers driving skills.

Normally the electrical connections to a trainstop are done by using a standard pre-formed cable, which is generally referred to as a snake. This is and quicker easier to change, and reduces the potential for wiring errors to be made when changing trainstops.
The W&C was a place where snakes were not used and instead individual wires were used.

I see the line is opening a week late, wasnt it originally meant to be reopening 4th september? Yes, when it first closed it was "until 3rd Spetember" but this was soon replaced by the more vague "until September". Still, one week slippage on a 22 week project isn't too bad.
