An update to Staff, most of which we already know:
CLIP for Central
Over the past few months, the Train Modifications Unit (TMU) based at Acton have been working hard on the Central Line fleet as part of the Central Line Improvement Programme (CLIP). This is the largest LU planned intervention on its fleet to date and has been a collaborative effort with engineering, project and production teams integrating into one work stream.
The Central Line is ageing earlier than planned and is currently experiencing problems with corrosion within car bodies and the traction system becoming more difficult to maintain. Such risks commonly occur over time but is happening sooner than expected. Furthermore, the newer fleets (from the 90’s onwards) have the added complication of computerised systems which can quickly become outdated.
Almost every part of the train gets stripped down and the works completed:
Below Waist Rail package:
- Aluminium floor repairs
- Installation of wheelchair bays in two carriages per train to improve accessibility
- Installation of new treadplates which include a yellow strip to improve accessibility
- AC Traction package
- Remove and replace train carriage direct current (DC) traction system with new alternating current (AC) traction system
- Overhaul of bogies including the replacement of DC bogie motors with AC bogie motors (these elements improve reliability of the fleet as DC motors are subject to carbon build-up where the brushes wear and subsequent flashovers result in trains being taken out of service. AC motors are brushless which will make it a more dependable system)
Above Waist Rail package:
- Installation of CCTV to improve passenger safety
- Remove and replace fluorescent tubing lighting with LED lighting system. LED’s have longer life and produce more lumens making them more dependable
- Installation of Passenger Information System (PIS) including dot-matrix visual displays and speaker system to improve passenger awareness
- New Data Transmission System (DTS) including a new computer interface in Train Operator’s cab
- Fitting of new carriage lino which aides visually impaired people in finding the doorways
- Door Setup following overhaul of door components

“It is fantastic that we have kept this work within Operations. We have the capability and drive to succeed, and want to make Acton Workshops the preferred option for delivering fleet intervention for the next few decades”
There are 85 trains that will go through the programme at TMU. It is estimated that each train will take 50 days to complete with five trains in work at any one time. The CLIP team is also supporting the Waterloo and City train intervention with phase one due to complete June 2022.”
