As these are 1940s buildings, but depicted in present day, they should of course reflect the current scene. So the shops should have tacky obstrusive plastic signage (newsagent, mini-cabs with flashing light etc). Maybe the shop nearest the entrance will have been converted to the POM suite or part of the car park have an extension built on it to house the ticket office after the passimeters were removed in the 1980s? One of the arches would make a perfect site for a Connect Radio base station. Finally it is most unlikely that buses will be allowed to stop anywhere near the entrance now, rather metal railings instead and the stop resited 'out of shot'. PS not fogetting lots of trunking and galvanised steel railings/ladders all over the station building!

Thanks all for your comments. Tram Man, I think under the arches will be fenced off and used as a store for tools, maintenance supplies etc. 21146 and Railtechnician, I am setting the model in the present day, so it will have contemporary signs, street furniture, posters, etc. However I am assuming that the building would have been listed, like many others from the same era, so modifications to the original design are kept to a minimum, trunking and ladders kept in check, and the passimeter is still in place. There are quite a few left in the 30s stations on the Piccadilly line of the same age, such as Sudbury Town and Arnos Grove. This is view of the shops I plan to have in the Sketchup model. The newsagent is there, along with a Subway sandwich shop. Esquire's barber is based on the one at Stanmore a mile down the road, and the florist is fictitious, though I believe there is one at Harrow-on-the-Hill station. Their signs will not be excessively tacky though, due to the assumed listed building controls. Paul

Railtechnician, thanks for the point about needing a permission form. I think there's an example in one of the design standards pdfs so I should be able to do it properly, though as you say you wont really be able to see much detail. Having sprayed and sanded coats of white paint to the point that I am happy with the surface of the 95 stock driving motor, I have now started adding the other colours. There don't seem to be any exact colours available as enamels, so I'm using the closest matches from the Humbrol and Revell ranges. The blue is done, but a few more coats of red are needed, then the grey front and rear panels, roof, and black details. I have ordered a complete four car train of a later, slightly improved design, so this DM is serving as a testbed for finishing and painting methods. Paul

Thanks newyorker. I am planning on doing the A stock, though I want to have a go at 38 stock first. Re your second query, this model is 95 stock - did you mean 96 stock? In which case I plan on doing that too, it just needs a bit of simple modification to the 95 stock CAD model.

I doubt there is much difference between 95 and 96 stock in 2mm scale!
I think spraying the model may be easier as it produces a flater colour. Looking good. Now for the flush glazing!

Having only just stumbled on this thread I have to say I'm very impressed. You've put some serious hard work into this and it shows. It's amazing and I can't wait to see the final finished product.
One question for you, you mentioned £80-ish for an Tube train in OO, that per carriage or train?

Metman and Chris, there are a few noticeable differences between 95 and 96 stocks, namely the size of the cab front door window and front destination indicator, the circular protrusions beneath the bodyside vents, the underfame equipment, the bogies, and the seventh car. Fleetline, thanks for your compliments on the project. The OO version will be about £80-90 per car, due to the increase in volume when the scale is doubled. Progress to date - the prints for a four car train to the slightly updated design with better underframe detail have now arrived from Shapeways. I'm not entirely happy with the combination of enamel Railmatch spray and Humbrol brush paint that I tried on the first car. Instead for the four car train I plan to use Halfords car paint sprays. Rather than test them on a tube car I have been using them to paint another 3D printing project I've been working on, an OO scale Austin Maestro. The Halfords paints seem to have worked pretty well on the Maestro, so once it's done I'll start painting the full 95 stock train. Paul

Any chance of seeing your finished station model, Burkitt? I am quivering in anticipation here (well, maybe a bit of an overtatement, that!) But I would like to view it. It looked truly to be a labour of love, from what I have seen already on here. Regards Alistair

How are you going to design your '73? I am making an A60 on google sketchup. does anyone know if you can use sketchup models in shapeways?
I bought a three car 1995 stock (But It will serve as a '96) in August and I am still painting it. Great model though.

Well, I received the prints a two month ago and I received the metromodels bogies, but the chassis is still in the works.
To use a Sketchup model in Shapeways, yo just need to export it to Collada file format (File=>export=>3D Model... and chose Collada (.dae).

I am possibly thinking about modelling an underground layout in N gauge, what do people use for the cable hangers ?
Thanks

I had drawn up several versions of cable hangers in OO scale using Sketchup and have had success in printing them through Shapeways. see: www.shapeways.com/model/476497/lu6cablepost1-v4.html These can easily be scaled to N, but I would be careful of the thinness of printing. If you want to try it I can post and N scale version from the original drawings.

Cyberman, did these work out OK? I have had some etches done in 4mm scale, but they have to be assembled one bracket at a time , hence my reluctance to try them out so far! Your solution looks a lot easier!

Neilw, I have a version that is just wall hung, no pillars and have printed many copies of this in Ultra Fine detail with no problem. No assembly required, but need to be painted. I should be running off some prints of the version I have shown you in the next month, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

I love these scale models of a proposed Northern line station on the Northern Heights Extension that was abandoned! So I would like to make a fake news report on this. BROCKLEY HILL TUBE STATION ALMOST COMPLETE Residents of Brockley Hill do not have to worry anymore - they are now having a tube connection link. The Northern line started it's Northern Heights Extension in 2010, with Brockley Hill the first starting construction in July 2010. Along with the station is a Subway sandwich shop, a flower shop and a barber shop. There is also another shop but people don't know what it does. But anyway, they are happy to see a new station on the Northern Line. A resident said that she works far from her area and said that this link is better than going to a bus for Edgware station, the next station south. And that's my fantasy level when it comes to this model - I love it truly!
