'Don't some of the trains tend to reverse before the station?' No, all LILDT stablers fully berth at the stopping mark on the platform, change ends and then down to the shunt and into the depot. For the signalling equipment to function correctly, in many cases the route must be completed fully. I am 99% sure that this is the case at Olympia too.

The off topic comments regarding various stock on LO have been moved from this thread to keep it as "on topic" as I can get it. It was drifting all over the place, and almost impossible to keep up with!
As always, it's a discussion between the staff that led to my action (not that I should need to mention it) and this post is purely explanatory.

What does London Underground (or whoever making this decision) define as special events?

What does London Underground (or whoever making this decision) define as special events? Actually a damn good question, because when I was a youngster and the line was "exhibition", I don't ever remember it running. (Though don't forget I'm from SouthEast London, and wasn't regular in that area apart from trips to Earls Court with the parents) I do, however, recall being told that there was a horse event there and "Harvey Smith" pays for the line - Don't ask, I haven't got a clue!

Is this reduction of service going ahead, or is it just rumour.

So not atall this year? Perhaps this will be one of the many post-olympic cuts in which case.

I shared the Olympia shuttle with two birds earlier... and not the type you're probably thinking of! They were on the train at Olympia when I boarded and I thought they would fly off... but they didn't. They just stood on the moving train. Here's a picture of one of them eating some discarded rubbish of some sort: vvcap.net/db/BinMPcLcQxkbL4DUK1Ug.htpAnd here it is walking off the train. vvcap.net/db/kcpEiz3MeYqy8eTdY524.htpThe birds gave me good luck it seems, as I just made the connection at Baker St (after changing at Edgware Road (after changing at HSK)) to ride an S-Stock up to HOTH, and then just made a Chiltern service back down!

Hmm.. this doesn't sound right.
With Earl's Court exhibition centre (same owners as Olympia) scheduled to close down right after the Olympics next year and that exhibition business all moving to Olympia, it means other businesses in the area are gearing up for a rise in trade.
Meanwhile in 2013 the recently demolished Inland Revenue offices at Trinity House should be in the final stages of development as a large new residential development. So it would seem surprising to cut back on regular services to/from that station right now, unless it's a temporary operational measure?

It makes sense to keep it open at least until the Olympics. It's surprising they aren't using the venue for the equestrian events (which will be in Greenwich, famed of course for horse riding...!!) because it was a ready-made space, as it always has been. Volleyball should be good at Earl's Court, though.
Although on non-exhibition days is there much call for transit on the branch? Buses are easy enough to hop on, and as has been mentioned there are plenty of rail options nearby. Got to make cuts to keep the bosses happy, so it seems like a line that can be made redundant if necessary from my experience.

Well it had a crummy service for years. If it had a decent, reliable and lasting 6tph or something then maybe it would have a lot more passengers then it does, but given that all the other modes of transport are seemingly more reliable its suffered.

The surprising thing is that it has lasted for so long. Using 'heavy rail' over such a short distance when other means such as buses are available makes no economic sense whatsoever.

It appears that LUL/TfL will no longer run this - or any other service - as 'public' transport.
The pound will prevail and of course you cut a service, you don't need the staff or infrastructure to operate it. In saying that, I do agree that in normal operation the ECT - OLY service is vastly under-used, however, it probably makes its money on the ECT - HSK leg.

Well, it does look as if the Olympia service WILL be heavily reduced Mon-Fri from 11 December after all! Just in time for the run of Christmas events at Olympia. I think that there's usually a large Christmas Fair, and the usual horse show.

The Olympia service does get well used during events, so it definatly should stay, so its good that the weekend timetable is still frequent. However, I have been to an event there on Mon-Fri, and the train was packed, so they definalty need an 'exhibitions only' element for when events occur on Mon-Fri. I've always been interested in the less-used LU services. I've never had the experience of the Epping-Ongar line or the Aldwych branch, so in a way I like how the Olympia branch has remained as a peculiar service.

It would certainly make the Tube Challenge harder!
With the limited service today (apparently only Embankment/Richmond, Edgware Road/Wimbledon and HSK/Ealing, (and precious few announcements at Earls Court, where the lightbox screens were suggesting there was a service to Mansion House!) I was surpised, whilst waiting at Earls court, to see the first train in was for Kenny O!

Monday to Friday Olympia service to be withdrawn from December 2011 WTT change - confirmed in a TfL Press Notice dated today.
It will still operate at weekends and during major events (at Olympia) MF.

Whilst I would agree it's more or less set in stone, it should be noted that the press release isn't actually confirmation but rather it's announcing it as a proposal for consultation.

Absolutely!! One 'certain' thing about the Underground is its 'uncertainty' and the ability to change its mind or 'adapt'. ;D

After all, weren't they talking about stopping the Saturday service on the Waterloo and City line last year? That hasn't happened - well not yet anyway?

Well it would finally release an eastern turn-back facility for my major reorganization of the western end of the District - reinstating, after a short break of 80 years, the green-line service to Uxbridge (from HSK). As we know, this would allow the little dark blue trains to do what they do best - Heathrow 1,3,4,5 and unify the stock type ('S') north of Acton Town. Win-win all round! ;D

I was hinting at this in my post on page 1. That proposal would have to tackle a few issues though.

But you need somewhere to turn them at the other end of the line.

But you need somewhere to turn them at the other end of the line. Not if the plan was to divert the current services to/from Rayners Lane and beyond to the Heathrow branch, as these services already reverse somewhere at the eastern end of the line. Extra reversals at the other end of the line may only be needed if the frequency through the central section is increased.

Win-win all round! ;D A few flaws in your plan: - Olympia service will still run on Saturdays & Sundays (so you've just lost your weekend service to Uxbridge
- Olympia service could still run on weekdays if an event requires it
- There'll be more trains to Wimbledon in the peaks - they'll most likely use the vacant slots at High Street Kensington
- The main objective is to free up Earls Court - running an Uxbridge service through here would create far more congestion
- Whilst Acton could be used as it is now for some Uxbridge services, the more you have reversing here the more you'll clog up Acton. That is not at all desirable.
This thread is heading towards RIPAS territory....

I'm a little bemused by the supposed benefits of this - surely if they're going to run services for special events, they will either need to a) roster staff every day and just not use them - thereby wasting money paying for someone to sit drinking tea for 8 hours, or b) rely on the goodwill of staff to work overtime when events are on, which I seem to recall unions objected to? And in order to provide the service there'd need to be rolling stock free for use on these days, too...

And what about all the runs from Lille Bridge? Most are going via Olympia aren't they? Would there not be benefits to tip out there instead of block a platform at Earls Court?
