The final date for A-stock in passenger service has not been confirmed (or if it has then the depot haven't been told!). Headboards are on order for the final run, but they'll have wording that doesn't mention a date.

it'll be an emotional time for A stock supporters when this happens, its a far better train even given its age.

As far as I'm aware none of the other metros with aged rolling stock were on fasts through much of their life. ). Surely long runs involve less wear and tear than a constant stop-start operation? Glasgow subway, their first rolling stock 1896 - 1977. The W&C's 1940 stock operated for 53 years - although it shou;ld be notyed that the line was always, except during WW2, strictly a six day a week railway so that really only counts as about 48 years.

Do you know wether they will be the white plastic headboards like on the 67ts events and the last Chesham Shuttle last day? Or a proper metal headboard?

I saw 5017 heading for the last round up on the southbound M3 at 10:16 this morning. There was also another car - a trailer I believe but couldn't get its number.
Later this afternoon, from the windows of The Gate pub, I saw an Alleleys low loader, minus load returning, I presume, to Northwood sidings for the next car.

I passed 5169 & 5016 on Monday this week at Northwood on a Southbound S Stock.
I noticed that one of the trailer cars on unit 5169 (6169/6168?) had one remaining pre-refurb 'No Smoking' roundel in the window - all of the other windows had the post-refurb Red rectangular 'No Smoking' stickers.
Anyone else notice this.? This got me wondering if there are there any other known pre-refurb curiostiies that survived.....

I think 'proper' LT/LU headboards have always been painted wood.

The A stock has really been hammered on the Mets rough permanent way for decades and in train years the A stock is in excess of 50 years.

So, the very last A62 'A' end unit - gone, well by tomorrow anyway, as it is the south end unit 5134 6134 this afternoon,5135 6135 tomorrow morning Incidentally, back in the 1960s (c.1967/68) I took a photo of this unit in Ealing Common on the 'Alps' sidings while it was being used for gauging. The sides of at least two cars (beneath the windows) were covered in sheet aluminium for the task.

Further to Northwoodterry's post of 08.41 this morning, just after the A Stock was refurbished, I did a fleet check of the variety of non-smoking labels (sad, but true as I did with the 1973 Stock before refurbishment, but that's another story). So here goes. I'll descibe them as "standard" LT bullseye, white-lettering-on-red "disc" (as on D Stock) and "rectangular" (non-LU-type), if you get my drift. There were variations on the first 7 trains: Train 1 (5234+5173). Car 5234 had a mix of disc and rectangular, 5172 had a mix of standard and rectangular, while 5173 had standard only. 6234, 6235, 5235, 6172 and 6173 all had rectangular. Train 2 (5132+5169). 5132, 6133, 5133, 5169 and 6169 had a mix of standard and rectangular, 6132 and 5169 had all rectangular and 6168 had a mix of all three. Train 3 (5142+5231). 5142, 6142 and the whole four cars of unit 5231 had a mix of standard and rectangular, 6142 had all rectangular and 6143 had all standard. Train 4 (5068+5205). 6068, 6069, 5069, 6204, 6205 had a mix of standard and rectangular, while 5068, 5204 and 5205 all had rectangular. Train 5 (5080+5211). All eight cars had a mix of standard and rectangular. Train 6 (5012+5183). All had rectangular. Train 7 (5084+5203). 6202 and 5203 had all standard, 6203 had a mix of standard and rectangular and all other cars had rectangular. Train 8 onwards all had rectangular. So, in summary, only two cars had the white (lettering) on red disc - 5234 and 6168. The cars with a 'mix' might not have been an equal mix - may have been an odd one or two of one sort, etc. Before you tell me "oh no they didn't" (or were different), and as I did this some 13+ years ago, with window breakages and replacements might have changed the whole list above! Finally, refurbished Trains 1, 2 and 3 at first had much larger car numbers above the windows. And do you remember they had slightly smaller white car numbers on the roof domes to the right of the destination blind at first ....

I think I was on that - Barbican to Baker Street (paired with 5025?), and thinking (as I don't use the Met very often) that it may be the last time I use A stock for a genuine trip (i.e not for the express purpose of riding an A stock) Looks like it might have been its last run, unless there's some spare glass available Srange, I don't think of leafy Buckinghamshire as a likely haunt for people who'd do that sort of thing - apart from anything else, they'd get very bored.

I'm guessing with the Diamond Jubilee that there'll be only a Wednesday scrap move this week?
I also wonder, unless another pair of units are being stripped as we speak, if the Chesham incident has pushed units 5118/9 and 5024/5 to the front of the scrap queue...

If a unit is being stripped a window swap may be possible. Depends which window it was?
