Currently on 5012, now the oldest in service and this one is also definitely not on its last legs!
Back on topic: Have not seen 5148 + 5150 and I have been on the Met near enough all day

there's a video on youtube of 5000 dated filmed 10/03/12,hardly on its last leg's. I was speaking to a Metropolitan line driver on Tuesday, who told me 5000 was one of the best condition units, but was withdrawn as it required a full lift that LU were not willing to pay for for a train with only a matter of months left in service as it is "not cost effective".

Even as a passenger I could tell it was one of the better units out of the remaining lot

Re. the comments about parts not being made available, the museum were offered a free choice of what to have recovered. This includes other items as well as the luggage racks, which seem to have generated most interest. Some parts are also being recovered for use on other preserved LU stock (Q-stock?), as well as for the other legacy LU fleets. Attempts were made to set up an official means of enthusiasts acquiring parts direct from depot, but this was unsuccessful. Requests to buy parts can be made via the scrap merchants.

I think its crazy that they are scrapping a perfectly good condition train when the rest are on their last legs. I am pleased really that 5000 is in good condition given that it is the oldest A stock in the fleet! I don't travel on the Metropolitan line much I have not been on a S stock yet!

It's not crazy if was just about to require a full lift (i.e. heavy maintenance). Money for running railways doesn't come out of thin air, and finances have a big influence of decisions.

Thanks for the advice undergrounddriver re wed's formation of T717. Today's formation was a little late arriving in Northwood Engineers' Sdg, approx 1315. This was probably due to some late running on the Met following this morning's incident on the Jubilee Line at Finchley Road.

Undergrounddriver, I think you are a legend because if it wasn't for you, every A stock fan will be inpatient and will be biting their nails about which A stock is about to leave us , so thank you. And R.I.P 5050+5149. I had some good times on those trains and I will truly miss them, and how I would miss the dodgy speakers on 5050. Another 2 units that will be not be forgotten.

Re. the comments about parts not being made available, the museum were offered a free choice of what to have recovered. Useful info. However that’s not the opinion of Booths or Knights rail at Eastleigh. In the case of Booths where I enquired last year to buy a complete 67 stock DM. They were unable to get permission from LUL to release an entire carriage, but could possibly release part of one. And the statement was that "LUL would not permit them to sell complete carriages", only bits of them. By that I assume seats, carriage numbers, blinds, and so on. Even if they could sell a complete carriage they would not be pushed on a final price, but ball park figure was in the “thousands”. Admittedly this enquiry was about ten months ago – so the decision might be different in respect of complete units. However they did offer to sell me a cab section (subject to them obtaining permission) for £5,000, but not the rest. Although I was more interested in the entire carriage, not part of it. In the case of 5000, on the 11th April 12, I sent an e-mail to Knights asking if I could purchase the front part of the carriage (using the "buying parts ruse"!) (Then indeed if they were happy with that proposal - I was then planning to push for the complete thing!). In this case, I was told that Knights Rail “were not able not enter into any negotiations regarding LU vehicles”. A pretty clear - short e-mail. So that’s the current state of play. Both enquires were serious propositions. If they can sell parts then perhaps someone at LUL can tell them they can. As both scrap merchants seem to imply there’s contractual obligations to uphold. I think Knights reply is pretty clear. However perhaps as you say LTM were given first call on any parts from these trains, then perhaps, LTM could step in and act as intermediary in the selling of complete carriages on LULs behalf? Not at skyrocket figures though! If they don’t, then none will pass into preservation. Dean

Checking my Flickr photos I realised today that I've managed to get every double-ended unit (except one) and all the single-ended units (except fourteen of them). Not excluding those units withdrawn in the pre-refurb era.

"if" they are still in one piece hoping. I'm not convinced - although 67 stock has been stored at Eastleigh, this was with a specific possibility of re-use for making up additional trains on the Bakerloo Line. If 5000 was to be retained for some hypothetical alternative use, I would have thought it would stay on LU metals, therefore avoiding what are presumably storage costs at Eastleigh. On a different note, I have seen documentation suggesting a possible A stock railtour during May, but I don't know if there are any definite plans. Plan was to cover all of the Met Line including some non-passenger moves.
