Any chance of a reminder, on this thread, of the timings of train 717, please? I'm sure that the timings are shown on the Forum somewhere, but I can't find them! Many thanks! According to past records in this thread, anytime between 1130 and 1300. I just want to make sure you do not miss it. A supermarket is available for refreshments.

But why have these two carriages gone to Eastleigh – whereas the rest has gone to Booths?

My latest tranche of photos have been uploaded. For some reason, one of the photos appear as if 5000 has broken loose and turned itself into a "monster truck".

5000 and 6000 went to Eastleigh today.
5001 and 6001 to go tomorrow morning and then 5232, 6232 some time tomorrow afternoon, again to Eastleigh.
5233 and 6233 will follow probably early on Friday, also to Eastleigh.
All to Eastleigh - so that I have been told. If Booths were involved, there will still be at least two cars left over at the end of the week.

It won't be two every week. Mostly one a week, with some second moves occasionally.

I hope it's not a dumb question, but why are LUL vehicles taken so far to be scrapped? Is there nowhere closer. With so many vehicles involved, why did TfL not purchase land and build their own facility on the outskirts of London - or at least purchase their own road vehicles to avoid the cost of hiring them?

Would probably cost more in the long term to maintain the facilities and vehicles. As well as this, trains are not scrapped continuously over a number of years. For example, after the 1959 stock was scrapped from 1998 - 2000, there was then no regular scrapping until the 1967 started to go in 2010. What would happen to the facility in the intervening years?

Scrapping a 50 year old train - extremely outrageous . . .

No idea why – but land values & wages costs might be part of the reason. In parallel the scrapping of buses in London ceased probably about 50 years ago. Since then buses have been mostly scrapped in Yorkshire (most went to a place just outside of Barnsley). At the time they had large amounts of unemployment due to the closure of the Pits in the 70’s. So the work was quite useful.
The sites were also a reasonable distance from houses, shop & offices, so few people could complain about the noise & dirt nuisance. This is a problem in the more congested South of England, where we cannot even get a railway built without objections.
When the 62 stock went – it mostly went to Snailwell Scrap yard near Newmarket. I think they had a proper incinerator the trains were pushed through. Makes you wonder what environmental protection they had in place back then. It seems Booths cut the trains up manually using gas axes, so this must be very labour intensive.

As long as an A stock unit or two is kept for posterity, it's not really an outrage to lose unit 5000 : it's not really that much different to others. And certainly not like, let's say, losing the first Routemaster : as that was quite, quite different to production examples.

I spent the early afternoon on Weds. 4th April (5000's penultimate day in service) riding 5000 from HoTH to Watford and back running as T446. I've uploaded all the images and a couple of films of this unit for posterity here - Watford Stn was eerily quiet before the evening peak photobucket.com/astock5000Enjoy !

northwoodterry, Watford Stn was always eerily quiet apart from the peaks. Sunday's were awful. On a Sunday evening we would be lucky to see half a dozen passengers after 1900hrs. Worse at Croxley. To give you some idea how quiet Watford used to be on one late turn on Xmas Eve I took less than £12 for the whole of the shift.

its hugely symbolic the loss of 5000. on another note they (A stock) have well outlasted many routemaster buses',those buses that survived were largely from the mid/late 60s'.
5000 ever appearing at amersham again is never going to happen, historical reenactment is scarred as well as historical nostalgia, its certainly was an upfront opportunity lost.
what does appear that might have happened, a deal was struck to scrap the entire fleet of A stock with no thought to any outside source interest.and all that appears to have been made available are the luggage racks.
