I do wish I was born about 30years previous! Class 37's on the mainline, Slamdoor EMU's, BR, other LU stocks etc! If ever I have to use the Met after all the A's are gone I may carry a small camp chair with me ;D Not only that, bands wrote their own songs and played their own instruments and sang without help from a computer. And as for jeans with a crotchline around the wearer's knees nowadays - don't get me started, I mean you can't even run away from the Peelers effectively like that can you? All of what you say is proper nostalgia and good for you too. I now recall with fondness the 1962TS although at the time me and my mate (we caught them from Woodford to North Acton everyday for several years) thought they were hot, uncomfortable and unpleasant although it was handy having a couple of smoking carriages where you could mask the smell of fellow travellers' BO or foot odour by sparking up a Marlboro every 15 minutes or so! A Stock are a wonderful long-serving entry into London's transport heritage but are a busted flush now and more so going forward. Let go of them Onion.........you know you can do it! Attach yourself to a 72 or 73TS, it looks like they may last a lot longer than originally expected! ;D

You can stand down until the 18th. Another is set to go then. All remaining units were in passenger service last week except for 5046. Also I have not seen this unit this week to date either. There are a couple of others that have fallen by the wayside in the last 6/7 days but will leave quoting them for a couple of days in case they show up. It lives! Running around, paired with 5203.

@whistlekiller
Well, i am glad about 5234 and 5110 going to Acton Works for RAT and the heritage train. True, 73's and 72's are going to last about another 10 years

Say goodbye to 5142 5155. Being stripped today. Ah, was 5155 in use yesterday?, I'm 50/50 on whether I saw it from a distance at HOTH and I remember that unit from when it took me to Amersham for the first time in 'enthusiast mode'!

I would have thought that these would have been going later, or were these two particularly ailing units we're talking about? TBH I was on 5227 a week or two ago, my God was it making some perculiar noises.

sadly its one of those things that's just going to happen and its time for these popular trains to slide into history.

I meant to start taking little pictures of each carriage number before the withdrawls started, yet never got round to buying a camera. Its good though that there are people catching them in their final weeks and days.
I wonder how long it would take through just normal travel to have ridden in every carriage, assuming even chances.

For the record, both these units were in service earlier this week; 5142 formed up with 5191 (as it had been for weeks) and 5155 formed up with 5088. Being formed up with 5088 will be fast becoming a death wish for remaining 'A' stock units as 5207 found itself in a similar position just a fortnight back!

A long time by all accounts. With regular commuting you'd probably get through 80% of the fleet within a relatively short time, but it could take a matter of years to get through the whole lot (speaking through experience!). Of course with access to Trackernet etc, the odds could be made to tumble quite a lot!

I presume I'm the only one on these forums that's actually happy to be seeing some of the A-Stock's departing on their final journey to Northwood Sidings? I would much rather have an S-Stock than an A-Stock for journeys any day...

No there are a lot of people keen to see the S stock take over, and see a real improvement in the service through automatic operation, smoothness and aircon!
There are also many, like me who have grown up using the trains and indeed used them all their lives and are of course sad to see them go.
RIP 5142 and 5155, I used them many times and enjoyed every minute.

I've just watched two Allelys Heavy Haullage flat bed trucks arrive in Northwood so two more will go tonight or in the morning perhaps. The reverse down the gravel track by the car park took at least 20mins...

Although not a fanatic of the A stock (I far prefer the products of Metro Cammell) I am still sad to see the A stock go, as I would any other train (73 stock excepted). The S stock has some great features, as well as those that aren't so good, and although they are smoother/cooler/cleaner/faster(?) than their Cravens predecessors, I would far rather the fun and character of the A stock, especially bouncing across the crossover at Neasden!

It became apparent on passing Northwood a short while ago that T717 operated today. The formation was 5004+5157 with 5004 at the north end. Thus, these units will be taken away by road this week for scrap.

Yep, train 717 did run.
It passed Northwood about an hour and half later than it should have done heading north towards Watford. When it came back to Northwood southbound, I think due to an issue with the points it carried on back south to Harrow-on-the-Hill. Then it returned about 30 minutes later and then used the crossover at Northwood rather than reverse at Watford and off it went into the siding.
RIP 5004 & 5156

Yes it was almost as if things were conspiring against the run ;D
Delayed ex-depot due to last minute maintenance issues which would have affected its ability to make it fully into the siding. Then as you state, further problems with the points at Northwood.
The train finally made it to its last LU resting place just before 1500hrs.

What exactly were the maintenence issues with 004 and 156? As far as a I heard there was a problem with the batteries on at least one unit (that being that they were dead).
