Currently, there are 3 different types of train in use. In 5 years there will be only 1! That strikes me as quite sensible progress... You're reducing training, spare assets and expertise by 1/3rd. Not really. You forget the route training, and that there might be slight variations between S8 and S7 trains.

Of course, but it's very boring! S7 and S8 will sound and look the same. The fact the the S8 cars will have an extra 2 seats per car isn't thrilling!

Boring is the word. Let's go back to Q stock ;D And 'F' stock as well. How about hand-worked doors? Free air-con! Or a compromise; F stock systems (better performance) but Q stock bodies... And the proper Q ones, not the R38 flared ones.

It is a fair point about having the same trains. When the A60/62 stock came in it replaced, Steam, T, F and O/P stock!!
CO/CP trains still made trip to Rayners Lane/Uxbridge in the early mornings until the 70s.

True, and on and on.
But still...

CO/CP trains still made trip to Rayners Lane/Uxbridge in the early mornings until the 70s. And on the return trip to Baker St, they actually ran in service from the Uxbridge branch to Baker St--where they became outer rail Cirlces. I guess this stopped when the Circle/H&C got all of their C stocks.

I guess this stopped when the Circle/H&C got all of their C stocks. But keep positive. It's probably unlikely (I hope) but with the introduction of "1 train fits everywhere" then timetables like that could be possible in the future. Don't forget that some of the original thinking behind getting a universal stock, was the ability to cover any trip with any train.

Well it's not so different; 3 double doorways per car side, heavyish, high performance, not that many seats, roof vents, bodyside passenger info boards.... 90 years before S stock.

True but we must remember that the F stock was built for the District Line!!
The O/P stock was the only stock to run on every sub surface single line, although it was not used regularly on the Watford and Amersham/Aylesbury routes - which says a lot!

MetControl is right about flexibility.
Can you imagine going to Amersham on a plastic seat?

Unfortunately for you lot, I am afraid that 'S' Stock is here and it is here to stay. I am over half way through my career now and I suspect that I will be 'meeting my maker' before 'S' Stock does. Never mind! Don't say that mate, you've got a few years left in ya! I'd hope you'll outlive the S stock! It is a shame in a way though, all these generic trains coming in, takes the interest out of the SSLs. Currently, there are 3 different types of train in use. In 5 years there will be only 1! With the last one due to enter service in 2015 and with a life expectancy of 40 years (but lets face it, it will probably be longer knowing LU), I very much doubt I will be around to see them being decommissioned!

Never mind! I highly doubt prjb will be as cool and calm when C' goes... ;D Even I can see that the workhorses of the Sub-Surface are coming to the end of their life, they would need a major refit (at a great waste of your tax paying pounds) to keep them going much beyond the current estimated replacement date. I will keep a CTBC for posterity though! ;D

Browsed through here today. Personally sad to see the A stock go. Im all up for the new trains if they had been built to look similar to the A stock. The size and shape of the A stock is amazing. I really do not like the size and shape of the new trains.
I guess we just have to move on now.
Who got the scrapping contract in the end? Was it Eastleigh? Id love to see a before and after photo of the train scrapped just to see what is in store for these trains. ANybody got any?

what arrived at eastleigh and what was left after was far cleaner then what was seen on the chesham shuttle last week, cameras couldn't see out of the windows or vice versa the unceremonious pile photo looks to have been removed.

Oh and luggage racks?!? Why on earth aren't they being sold?! Surely someone in power reads this; they're worth more flogging to us than the scrap value of a couple kilos of Aluminium. Generating bad PR for yourself, Mr TfL.....

Generating bad PR for yourself, Mr TfL..... I expect the manpower costs of removing the racks in one piece makes it too expensive to sell them separately. Also, by crushing them they are emulating the cleansing process alluded to in "Nineteen Eighty-Four". Eventually Tfl'll be able to claim the racks never existed in the first place and rioting passengers on S Stock faced with no racks at all (like the rest of us) will be forced to calm down.....

I've not seen anything on this forum about who has won the scrapping contract, and given the level of interest in it I'd be surprised if it wasn't posted here. This suggests that the contract has not been awarded yet.
There was a picture or two of one of the trial scrapped units posted in one of the threads here recently. I can't remember which one though, but it wont be long before someone points you in the right direction.

The timer now is ticking for the A Stock, and I've still to get the image of the end of the trailer car for my modelling project. According to Underground News #588, it looks like DSM Demolition has 2, Eastleigh 3 and Booths 3.
