a60 - thanks for the film posting. I noticed the back of the second car had a destination board of Surrey Quays. Kind of fitting to go along with the LU demise of the East London Line.

Why the hell are they clogging up already choked roads when they could tow an entire train up a half empty railway network? Seems daft to me. Guess it must be cheaper so sod the inconvenience to road users.

Possibly the extortionate track access charges, and the fact the grandes dames of the A stock are a little too fat to fit anywhere else.

The underframe of 5172-3 was not in good condition, hence why it was withdrawn. They are not suitable for rail transport, and as mrfs says they are out of gauge in places.

The second lorry is quite old a "P reg" As it is not a local company I wonder if the lorry is compliant with the London emission zone rules. If it is not was any dispensation for the charge as TFL is the customer?
Why are TFL not being green ? The A60/A62 stock is wide however when it last went for overhaul, admittedly via a roundabout route, they were all sent by rail.
Every coach is being transported separately 100's of journeys; I must ring the Carbon Bank and close my account ;D

I'm on Cubs honour not to reveal the circumstances, but some years ago I had the opportunity to select an A stock destination blind. For whatever random reason, I happened to choose Surrey Quays - giving this video the most unique nostalgic twist

These are the Alleyls Heavy Haulage fleet (they have it seems 20 DAF tractors as well):
DAF 8x4 XF 480 250t DAF 8x4 XF 430 250t DAF 8x4 XF 480 150t DAF 8x4 95-430 150t DAF 6x4 95-430 150t x 2 DAF 6x2 XF530 100t DAF 6x2 XF430 100t DAF 6x2 95-430 100t Volvo 6x4 FL12 420 120t
I can't see any reference to any re-engining with lower-emission engines than as fitted originally but it is very possible.
I write every month on vintage heavy haulage..it's about Volvos at the moment and it is interesting to see how little hasd changed as regards trailer designs, and the tractors seem to be the same overall shape, with 6x4 drive. It's just that the bhp is much higher!

The leading car being taken for scrap still has a set number! I thought they would save that for spares.

Strange given how short the met service is, or WAS, and will be again very shortly, LUL should let the deport scrap two good units.
One was a tree strike ( which would take a full day to repair), and the other a burnt out wiring loom in one car! How very short sighted.

Thought the first one was heavily robbed due to shortage of spares?
There will be far more in way better condition that'll be sent for scrap as the time comes. Thats terrible pretty much anyway you slice it, but no-one seems to want them. If something works ethically it shouldnt be throw away, but if noone wants to use them then what happens, you leave it lying around for a few years until they dont work anymore then throw them?
I hope LU has been making copious enquiries as to possible further use?
I still stand my suggestion of depot 'Pets' for each line though...

However hard it is, you've got to let them go. They will be scrapped, and no doubt a huge amount of the material taken will be recycled - so just think one day your beloved A60 could be turned into a tin of beans ;D ;D (Someone hold metman back, I think he's going to punch me ) Those car drivers amongst us I daresay have sent at least one car to a scrap yard - maybe the first car you had, and probably because it was an old banger when you got it. The A60s may have been able to carry on for a few more years, but for how many more? And at what cost to the company and thus to the fare-payer?

Is there any possibility of one being kept as a 'heritage' unit for rail tours and the like.

What's wrong with the A stock? ;D NOTHING, the company has spent the last five years winding down on maintenance, which has now caught up with them ;D

What's wrong with the A stock? ;D NOTHING, the company has spent the last five years winding down on maintenance, which has now caught up with them ;D NOTHING, apart from the fact that they are nearly 50 years old, and if they are not replaced soon, they wlll become very unreliable which will then give you a reason to moan about something else. The money needed to keep them going will come through increased fares, which I'm sure you will also moan about. ;D ;D I like the A stock too, as I loved the 1959 stock, but the time has come I'm afraid. As much as we like the old trains, LU's first duty is to provide a reasonable service. Look at what happened in the latter years of the 1938 stock. A number of trains were given an extra heavy overhaul back in the 1970's when they were about 35 years old. By the early 80's, they were breaking down left, right and centre, to the point where even with constant maintenance, they were cancelling up to 10 trains per day, sometimes more.

I wouldn't say the A stock are in that category yet! I think they are better built than the 1938 stock and basically use a very refined PCM.
deadmans won't be paying the higher fares though will he!
I've still got my first car, nearly 14 years old, runs like a dream because it has been well maintained...see any parallels?.... ;D

Thank you for not posting it as an embedded image though Dunno about others but I'm trying to avoid the sight of A stock in the scrap yards. I'll just tell myself they're being stored in a welsh coal mine just incase, like the kettles...

Not a welsh coal mine - the LU Strategic Reserve is stored on the mothballed portions of the Fleet and Chelney lines that *they* won't tell you about.
