Anyone seen the Central Line Sandite trains out yet? That's a video clip of one at Woodford Station. That's great. Just listen to the sounds it makes. Takes me right back to when I was 7 and getting the train to school everyday(Woodford to South Woodford). Yes, back in 1972 a 7 year old was fairly safe on his own travelling the Central Line...... I'd think that the weather would have to get a bit worse than this before it makes an appearance again. Personally, I'd have it going in and out of Woodford sidings all day every day just for the nostalgia value!

Shame I wasn't around to get a ride on these trains, although I did in my mothers stomach (if that counts)

I've never been on a 1962 stock but if I couldn't see that video and just heard the sound I'd have thought it was an A stock.

You haven't lived! ;D ;D ;D In that case, nor have I I heard the trains were good, but they used to shake and rattle an awful lot. I remember when I first travelled on the Central line, the 1992 Stock wasn't long in service, and the trains were much louder and shakier than they are now

Sorry if I don't share your enthusiasm for the 62, I know that the buffs like them because they are based on the Goddess of all Tube Trains, the 38, but I worked on the 62s as guard and motorman for many years, and in comparison, to work on at least, the 92 is a palace. Towards the end of their lives, the 62s were vile. Graffitied, rotting with fungus woodwork, they stunk. The cabs were tiny in comparison with the voluminous 92 and one was constantly getting covered with grease and oil, and the brake dust was horrendous. Hot and airless in the summer, freezing in winter, for punters and crew alike. My hair would lather up grey after a day on those things. The din was awful and the side play would make the hand grabs literally bang holes in the Formica ceiling. Shake, rattle and roll, no kidding. The seats were more dust saturated horse hair than seats and they would get flats to add to the din as they creaked along. Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang and the auto coupler would bang from side to side to accompany them. The brakes were dodgy and the Westinghouse which had to be tested on every trip at the penultimate station was a fun brake as in - "Will it work this time.......errr, No! Emergency! Cosh It! Here comes the end of the platform - oh no" And holding down the Deadman gave me pins and needles. The guard's job was with hindsight down right dangerous, I know of one who was killed in an accident. We had a horrid little sciatica inducing flip down seat and little pull down tray for our billy cans. The Loudaphone to the driver/guard was a joke "Blerrbwahgoommolebubbblepwhuh" - Shouting "Hello John, can you repeat that? "Blerrbwahgoommolebubbblepwhuh" - "Err, ok, right" If I had to go back to work those things I'd quit. Still, my time on the back and front was a laugh as I had great motormen and guards, that's the only thing I miss about the 62. The Sandites as you know are now painted up, they look quite cool. Inside, just as rubbish though, even more so actually. A colleague of mine doesn't share my negative remembrances of the 62, and refers to them romantically as the *Silver Love Goddesses* I'm pretty sure I saw him licking that four car 62 that's being done up on the back road siding at Hainault the other night. Needless to say he hates the 92................ Five car Sandite in West Ruislip depot a few weeks ago being readied for battle with the dreaded leaf. Up and down it was going............ i54.tinypic.com/2uzwa5k.jpg

She used to get the Central line from Newbury Park to Mile End, before changing to the District to go to Embankment I believe. She told me she would always try and avoid the Central line and get the District as it was much more comfortable. I quite like the 92 stock. I know the trains aren't in the best of conditions at the moment, but with a makeover, they'll be as good as new.

You're probably right.............funny how nostalgia can often cloud judgement! Still, they did make a brilliant noise! ;D Why did they make a 5 car unit? I thought most 62s were 4 car units doubled up into 8s on the Central LIne.

Might it be because the motors are all slowly aging? An extra NDM would allow a speedier time to be kept.

It looks rather strange next to a 92TS NDM with nothing attached to it! I bet the spares are very difficult to get hold of now, seeing as there are hardly any left in existence. Isn't the CHT 62ts being done up at Hainault?

I guess that is how the 59/62 stocks would have looked if they were refurbished 20 years ago.

And, as usual, 21146 has a picture of whatever you're looking for. it's here [click] I wonder what it would look like internally if it got a full refurb

Actually it has had a full refurb inside with a major mod. Now known as the *Rail Punisher Train* It trawls the line dealing with those who cause delays by sticking their footsies in the doors. The operator of aforementioned train will observe punishable behaviour, inform the L/C, fully secure his train and make his way to the adjacent platform where the waiting-to-be-punished-with-it's-foot-in-the-door will be dragged by burly men into the RPT and fed into one of the hoppers seen in the picture. It's very efficient and is used during *Carnivaaal* and New Year's Eve.............The hopper produce is then sold to France to be stuffed into courgettes........... i52.tinypic.com/34e7ocz.jpg

I'm not sure we could persuade the french to eat the contents of such a hopper. Have you considered the kebab trade? I love the way it's still got a line diagram up

The *Punisher* RPT is a bad dude train that's always in conflict with The Mad Max 38 who lives in West Ruislip, aka The Edge Of The World depot. Max and the RPT fight over the kebab spoils/trade that have been left on the seats of passenger trains........... i56.tinypic.com/2nticl5.jpg

I noticed that it still has some of the Central line diagrams intact.
