From Newsline Cent & W+C Issue 3, which appeared last night. There will be 23120 seating backs and cushions, 4080 saloon windows, 2040 perch seats, 680 car body panels under the "refresh project". "Passengers will see and feel the benefit in time for the London 2012 Games". But no repaint?

Have you seen the unit, which I think is 183, with the new saloon lighting? The dropped down shades have been removed and are now flush with the ceiling giving extra headroom. Looks very neat.............. i54.tinypic.com/15g2sde.jpgI recall reading somewhere this is a trial with LED lighting. Personally I think it's harsh & horrible, I don't understand this current obsession with everything having to be as bright as possible.

LEDs are more reliable, last longer and fail individually in little LEDs, not tube by tube.

I think grab poles are too disgusting to touch (seriously, putting hand cream on seconds before you enter the carriage and then rub it all over the poles!?) and quite often out of reach anyway during crush load in the mornings.

I recall reading somewhere this is a trial with LED lighting. Personally I think it's harsh & horrible, I don't understand this current obsession with everything having to be as bright as possible. It can be harsh and horrible can't it? However, I believe from speaking to various people, not necessarily connected with LUL, that bright light like this is an excellent deterrent to criminals as it makes them feel more vulnerable. If that is indeed the case then it's well justified IMHO. Maurits, other people may well have had their hands on the lights as well! With that being the case, hand cream is the least of your worries.

In my opinion, there are a few basic things that need to be sorted out which are currently unacceptable.
1. Leaking over the middle seats through a join beneath the ventilation grills - whenever it rains, this seems to happen in a large number of cars. This can't be good for the body of the train nor the seats? Nor the passengers rear end.
2. The flooring which seems to bubble and get ripped especially around the single leaf doors at each end.
3. The seat cushions/covers. I have sat on a few chairs and found my bottom sinking down more then it used to.
It is slightly frustrating to see different versions of stickers everywhere - there are three different instructions for use of the alarm (the newer blue one, the old green 'Emergencies' and the red 'Use of passenger alarm).
Aside from that, the ventilator fans could do with a good clean out, as if you dare to look into one there is always nuts/bits of fingernails/dirt/dust around them.
There is nothing wrong with the lights, in my opinion...
Give me a mop and a bucket, some rubber gloves, a few cloths and screwdriver and I'm sure I could polish one up during an afternoon!

I saw a mock up of the new seats, a lot lighter and therefore a lot easier to lift when you need to isolate a compressor or operate a DML but no armrests in evidence. I think the “car body panels” will come ready painted, nothing mentioned about lighting and as the blurb mention “seating backs” I would assume that “cushions” refers to the things you currently sit on. Sorry if you were expecting something nice from Ikea under your rear.
Maurits, gloves, mate. A few TOps wear them so as not to touch anything, I used to wear them when removing faulty intercar barriers but now I just splash on some of that medical handwash stuff.
As for bright lights deterring criminality, Whistlekiller, I suspect the ne'er-do-wells of London aren’t that shy and will carry on thieving.
Jamesb, you wouldn’t get a train for an afternoon, it’s hard enough getting one to do the stock part of ATOR these days let alone carry out a “deep clean”. If you wanted to do this it would have to be on a night shift. One hopes the new windows will be less leaky.

I use this line quite often going into london on a saturday when the Met line is closed for engineering works, i find they do get hot, they need an internal refurb just not with LED lights this LED boom is annoying me lol and all grills need a clean out! After seeing these l understand why new trains are built with grey around the front windows! I do like these trains though, very fast, the 73 stock feels like a slug is dragging it from the front with a piece of string (not a 37/9!) after a ride on a 92.

I know what you mean, although the Piccadilly Line is a bendy slow route anyway!
The 92 is may favourate of the modern stock and I think there's still much life in it. Now the bogies have been improved, the rest should be cosmetic! A new interior would be nice. New seats, sort out the pair that are set in slightly it looks pants! The draught screens look really average and put a few tip up seats in. They need new LED destination displays to the front too. LED tail lights?
..and sort that tape out!

Got on a front carriage today (as normal). Standing right at the front, the huge vent on both sides of the train were stuck in the negative position and wouldn't budge into the positive position.
I couldn't care less if dust fell out on to people...I just needed some ventilation, it was absolutely squelching this evening! Those vents make a huge difference.
They need to sort out the rubber seal around the windows which looks like it's coming away and causing the leaks before they do anything about the seating arrangements.
Err speaking of which I saw a 92ts the other day which had the window areas treated on the first carriage only. It was completely grey in colour and spread about 3 inches away from the windows evenly all around...looks like they removed the black rubber seal and filled it in with some poly filler.

Wow, your concept of cosmetic is pretty extensive. The pair of seats set in slightly have no pressure vent behind them so you’d have to build the back out and front out for six pairs of seats on every car, 8 cars per train, 85 trains on the line. Where do you propose putting tip-up seats, you can’t replace the current seats as they all have equipment underneath and sticking them on the draught screens would just block the doors for people getting on an off. The destination displays work ok-ish so why bother replacing them and the tail lights are fine, I have no problem seeing the train in front. Got on a front carriage today (as normal). Shame you didn’t make a note of the car number, 91***, as I doubt that is something the train maintainers would even notice at night. The blurb released last week from 55 said 4080 saloon windows will be replaced and from your observation it would appear they’ve started that already. Amazing, they are actually doing thing sin the right order, windows before seats. Wonders will never cease…….

I know the bogies will cut into the seating bays by the car ends so they couldn't go there. Looks like we're stuck with it then!

I reckon they should keep the interiors just replace/very deep clean the stuff already in place, maybe if LU did this all along we would still have wood floored stock etc!

They need to be more welcoming. The spartan look is very practical sure, but it is harsh. Something a little warmer perhaps. A more yellowy light, plusher seating, a more mellow colour scheme. Cosy them up a bit. DM describers inside, and for once a male (" The time sponsored by Accurist will be....") voice on the announcer. I'm sick of matronly bint voices breathing over me. ( "Order number one hundred and twenty three, to your collection point please" ) Yes, there are still men in the world you know. Doesn't mean one has to lose space, but make em look more friendly. Oh, and get rid of the dated red, white n blue paintwork, what's left of it that is. I remember the standards running from Hainault. Gorgeous red exterior, glass shades shading warm low wattage light bulbs, green paintwork inside, plush seating in luscious colours, woodwork, the guard, and the real smell of The Underground..............Can we go retro please?

The Standard Stock in the Acton depot felt very cosy.. Unfortunately, having travelled on Standard Stock carriages as part of the 4-car Hainault-Woodford shuttles (way back when), I can report that when mobile, they were also noisy, draughty and downright uncomfortable with a suspension apparently based on a "no springs whatsoever" principle.

Window and seat covers should start to be replaced within the next 3-4 weeks running for approx a year. Cab ends Will start to be replaced in June, with inter car panels being replaced where needed. Rumours that w&c trains Will get same sort of treatment when the 92ts refresh is finished.

The lighting is fine as it is imo You're entitled to your opinion and I would agree that it isn't a major priority when the budget is tight. However in terms of design I personally think the proposed modified lighting looked far more stylish. I've never been a fan of the current light covers.
