Reading through the other thread, I don't actually recognise a fair bit of what has been said. I've not noticed the alleged duct tape work? Take a look near the cab ends where there is a joint between there and the passenger saloon.. then you'll notice.

If I recall correctly the Duct Tape was supplied by 3M and Modern Railways magazine reported that it would not discolour for something like 20 years, maybe they meant days! This tape makes the 92's look dirty is almost a joke and bad for PR as well. Xerces Fobe

Ok, yeah I see it now. It blends quite well though. More serious is the acute of eczema that Shepherd's Bush seems to have developed.

Has to be said they look awful. The vandalism makes it worse. I'd string up whoever was responsible for using paint stripper on them. It's heartbreaking to see the damage. Find out who's responsible, take em to court, fine em BIG time and send the bailiffs 'round if they can't pay in cash, then bang em up in solitary for life........................................Still the depots could do a temporary patch up. Wire wool the damage, get some masking tape and spray the best match possible until a full re paint can be done. It wouldn't look great, though it wouldn't cost a lot, but they'd still look far better than the eyesores going up and down at present.

that duct tape rubbish comes in handy, noticed it has been used to patch part of the floor inside a 92ts.

I've never seen the duct tape used on the floors, only on the bulkheads behind the cabs. The tape used to stick the lino down is the black and yellow hazard stuff.............

It was definitely the cab end variety tape!! It was used to patch a join between two floor lino sheets or whatever they are called.

Although already said, what a great impression foreigners will no doubt be left with for the olympics.
Pity they were smallest initial cost, could have been so much better.

The most depressing thing I've seen, there's one car I get on (I wish I could remember the number!) that's had something scratched into it for a few years now. The lovely person who decided that defacing the train did, rather nicely, though, etch the year in... "1994" or so it claims. (Of course, that's what you get when you always sit in the same car.. I like familiarity!)

I've been on the Rome Metro too. Interestingly, only the line 2 trains (actually older than line 1!) are terrible. The newer trains are clean. The suburban metros are also in a terrible state. I think they stopped caring there now. Every flat surface is covered!

I think I heard somewhere, that in Rome they consider graffiti artistic and expressionist, and always leave it.
Each to their own I suppose.

I think I heard somewhere, that in Rome they consider graffiti artistic and expressionist, and always leave it. I think they just don't have the money for cleaning.

Sounds more likely Alex! I'm interested to discover what can be done about the spliting sections on the 92s. The D stock has suffered a similar problem where an arrow shaped plate was added near the cab. I guess the 92s would look like something out of Mad Max!

The 92's really do look terrible. Aside from the graffiti, the paint work is decaying around the windows, they are all sooty everywhere and the dot matrix displays on the front have become so gummed up, they can't be read.

Several months ago I just thought people were ever so slightly exaggerating about the front DM displays, but having recently travelling on the Central line, I can certainly agree with you all. The condition of the front displays are quite bad now and on many trains you cannot even make out the destination.

When I was a regular traveller to Debden, I used to determine the destination of the train by the length of the DMI displays rather than the unreadable words - particularly at Stratford eastbound where the platform DMI is invisible from most of the platform. I worked out that a long destination was "Hainault via Newbury Park", "Woodford via Hainault", "Newbury Park", or "Hainault via Woodford" and thus no good to me!

I do that with the buses!
The 92ts was the first stock to have the electronic displays and it shows. They should be replaced on overhaul.
I really like Paul Moss's book 'Underground Movement'. There are a few concept trains and refurb mock ups that never were. It would be interesting to see what people could come up with for a simple and relatively cheap refurb......

What is even more shocking is that the current destination displays on the 1992 stock are NOT the ones they had when orginally put into service. The original ones became unreadable after only 2 - 3 years, and were replaced with the current ones, along with the train set number displays. As much as I like the 92's, they really have been a joke from the start in terms of their poor design. Such a shame, they could, and should, have been so much better.

Weren't the original destination display and set numbers similar to the effect on an LCD watch? Certain I've seen this before but was a long time ago now.........

I think it was the sunlight that broke down the LCDs. They didn't last long at all. In between them and the current displays we had a flipchart of destination cards which were far better than the LCDs and the LEDs of today. That cards sat at the bottom of the M door in a vertical metal tray.

Check out unit 91/92225....The front and ends of both cars have been given a paint job and new, albeit redundant, door buttons and intercar barrier *blisters* for want of a better word. Looks like 18 years has been stripped away on the outside. Still tatty inside though.................. Scrubs up quite well, you could still smell the fresh paint........ i51.tinypic.com/11kjt60.jpgi56.tinypic.com/mkevit.jpg

Cab end looks sweet.
On the 2nd picture it looks like there are no join lines near the top of the door compared to the car on the left. On closer inspection it's been painted over possibly?
Why replace the door buttons? Was it easier to polish the button part and put it back then remove it and fill in the gap?

Yes, it does look good, even though it's just the cab and rear ends of that unit. Even though they're are redundant, the buttons, especially the ones on the bulkheads do still actually work. So replacing it evens out the look, and who knows one day they might all be fixed and bought back into service. The vandalism and wear and tear makes the trains look worse than what they actually are. If they were all given a paint job, new moquette, armrests, a deep clean, and the flooring properly stuck down, they'd look as good as new. 91225 from the front looks and smells like it was built yesterday. Though I must emphasise, I didn't sniff it..........

Bit of a hypothetical here...
If Acton works was still the major works for the entire underground and hadn't been run down, is it likely that the 92ts would appear in much better condition than now?

From Newsline Cent & W+C Issue 3, which appeared last night.
There will be 23120 seating backs and cushions, 4080 saloon windows, 2040 perch seats, 680 car body panels under the "refresh project".
"Passengers will see and feel the benefit in time for the London 2012 Games".

Have you seen the unit, which I think is 183, with the new saloon lighting? The dropped down shades have been removed and are now flush with the ceiling giving extra headroom. Looks very neat.............. i54.tinypic.com/15g2sde.jpg
