Totally agree. All they needed was a paint or vinyl wrap job in corporate livery to get rid of the graffiti shadowing and match the rest of the fleet. Did you see the prefurb 7008 in it's final days? The vinyl sheets were peeling at the edges and the sticky joins were covered in dust making them look terrible. The painted refurbs look far better.

although there have been many opinions regarding the new trains , the only question i have is , why spend over a million pound per unit refurbing the entire ' D' stock only to get rid of / scrap the entire fleet when its the green lines turn to run the new trains on their line ? doesnt seem practical to me or make good business sense !! The interiors were warm and servicable, with new moquette, but now feel 'cold' in dull grey. Thereby showing that LU are damned if they do, damned if they don't. And what if the money had completely run out before the S-stock could be built for the District? Or if the whole project was delayed by an extra couple of years?

I'm sure the D Stock could go on for another 10 - 20 years. And are they actually painted? When I was in Upminster depot just prior to the open day, the raised outline of the previous roundel transfer on a car was clearly visible under the white livery if viewed from an angle. So are these trains painted or wrapped? And if painted, why were the bodysides not rubbed down first before repainting, if indeed they are painted?

When I was in Upminster depot just prior to the open day, the raised outline of the previous roundel transfer on a car was clearly visible under the white livery if viewed from an angle. So are these trains painted or wrapped? And if painted, why were the bodysides not rubbed down first before repainting, if indeed they are painted? Yes they are painted, and I have also seen the old roundel shadows underneath, they also painted over dents from stone throwing incidents without filling the dents, and grime in the cabs was just painted in.

Sounds like a Quality job. I suppose there wasn't much point in applying tons of finesse to it though.

All a bit off the topic of S stock, but here's a little more about the D78 stock refurb. The old roundel shows faintly because the years of mild acid wash when bare aluminium has etched away the panel except where the roundel was. It's not really practical to rub down the roundel to make it totally invisible. Only the bigger dents were filled, because we didn't want to have lots of filler. There's an increased risk of it falling off and it increases fire load slightly. Also where filler is used, it's also impractical to finish it completely invisibly without a disproportionate expense. I think a small 'dink' looks OK and better than a poorly rubbed down 'mud pie' effect. These are workaday trains, not a concours automobile! Those who visited Upminster open day will have viewed panels standing at rail level, where the incident light shows up imperfections more than when viewed from a station platform. Yes, about £1m a train was a lot of money, but it's your money remember and was a lot less than some previous refurbs and I think, slightly better spent.

No, that is train 1 (Train 2 is in Neasden Depot). But yes, it did go to Old Dalby today.
